This spring, I was one of eight panelists in the American Bookseller Associationâs Childrenâs Indies Introduce panel for Summer and Fall of 2021.
The panelâs goal is to read and discuss early galleys and manuscripts of forthcoming middle grade and young adult books that publishers submit to be part of debut author promotions, and choose ten titles for the final list, and to present at ABAâs Childrenâs Institute. From January to April, we read and had biweekly zoom calls to share our thoughts.

Find my recommendation for the middle grade novel about a nonbinary kid, their sensitive and cautious classmate similarly navigating his identity, and a lot of cute rescue pups--Both Can Be True by Jules Machias! This and more titles in the American Bookseller Associationâs May & June Kids issue of Indie Next.
Both Can Be True by Jules Machias
Quill Tree Books, 9780063053892, $16.99, June 8, Ages 8â12
âMiddle school is hard, but trying to figure out identity â who you are â is probably the hardest part. Ash and Daniel face all of those genuinely awkward, confusing, and wonderful questions in bigâhearted ways in Both Can Be True.â

Find my recommendation for A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes & more in the American Bookseller Associationâs February issue of IndieNext!
A Thousand Ships: A Novel by Natalie Haynes
Harper, 9780063065390, $27.99
âFrom The Aeneid to The Iliad and The Odyssey, classic stories of the Trojan War are implicitly reliant on the role of women, however reticent they are portrayed. Finally â finally! â we have a retelling that does women, girls, and goddesses justice. Through the perspective of women in various places and times during the war, Natalie Haynes constructs an epic collage that follows the warriors, refugees, oracles, muses, wives, and daughters of Troy, Greece, and beyond in one of the most famous conflicts in world history.â

Find my recommendation for Jackie Polzinâs Brood & more in the American Bookseller Associationâs March issue of IndieNext!
Brood: A Novel by Jackie Polzin
Doubleday, 9780385546751, $24
âOver the course of a year, told in a collection of snapshots, Brood shows the life of a woman grieving by doing anything but. She gives herself purpose by taking care of a small flock of chickens, as well as finding small but kind, funny, or wry ways of interacting with her neighbors, eccentric mother-in-law, and caring husband, Percy. There are plenty of clever and funny moments from scene to scene (not to mention the odd and interesting analyses of a chickenâs life and point of view), but the beauty in this book lies in the narratorâs acceptance of the everyday, and of all the things â bad, good, but mostly in-between â that come therein.â

@siba_books: Thank you to Cat Chapman of @oebookstore for the review of @paraicodonnell's THE HOUSE ON VESPER SANDS (@tin_house) - a Winter 2021 #ReadThisNext title! Find more reviews from Southern independent booksellers at The #SouthernBooksellerReview (link in bio)!

Image of book cover on left hand side of graphic, with the text: "A sooty and shadow-filled Victorian London acts as a sentient backdrop to the sinister, dark, clever (and somehow even hilarious at times), detective mystery that is THE HOUSE ON VESPER SANDS. As a reader, there were just so many sensory details and perfect moments of tension that made the world feel all the more real, and the discovery all the more haunting." - Cat Chapman, Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL - on the right. Find my recommendation for Valerie Perrinâs Fresh Water for Flowers & more in the American Bookseller Associationâs July issue of IndieNext!
Fresh Water for Flowers: A Novel by ValĂŠrie Perrin, Translated by Hildegarde SerleÂ
Europa Editions, 9781609455958, $25
âValĂŠrie Perrinâs Fresh Water for Flowers is gorgeous. Reading it was almost like being baptized by Violetteâs presence as a cemetery keeper, in its comfort, stability, and floral surroundings. Perrin takes us into the pool of Violetteâs melancholic past, from first loves to devastating losses. It truly gripped each and every one of my emotions, from fear and sorrow to elation and sentimentality. Whatever I can write as a review, this book is still so much more. Iâm so thankful to have read it and canât wait to share it with readers.â âCat Chapman, The Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL
