Something we definitely noticed on our trip was the impact of climate change in the western United States. . Areas that should have been rainy and lush in May and June instead provided bright sun and unusually high temperatures for the area. In six weeks, we only encountered rain a couple of times. Some places were still cool and moist, like the Redwoods of California, but they weren’t drippy and foggy like we’d anticipated. Some places were so absurdly hot with relentless sun, I struggled physically at times, like in Arizona. . Already so many temperature records have been broken this summer and the drought is forcing some states to reconsider infrastructure. This is real, guys, and it’s not going away. It’s heartbreaking to see the gem of our country, the dramatic, unique and unparalled environment of the west, change from impacts of human activity. . Selfishly, I’m grateful I got to see it before it’s unrecognizable but I hate typing that. We need to make the climate a priority and begin to make sweeping changes before the places we call home cannot support us any longer. Before we lose countless species of plants and animals that cannot acclimate. Before we have huge economical repercussions and climate refugees from places that refused to acknowledge or prepare for these changes. . My state of Texas is one of these, and after witnessing firsthand what can happen when your state doesn’t care to protect, help or prepare its citizens for weather disasters, it is unfortunately literal when I say that this is a deadly issue. . As heartbreaking as it is to see the natural beauty of our country crumble in drought, it’s not just an issue of losing something we love to visit or view with wonder. It’s about the domino effect that happens when you start plucking out key components of our delicate ecological balance (hint: they’re all key) and we begin to run out of food, safe land to live on, and tolerable temperatures. This is going to have an impact on you. You cannot escape that reality. First thing I’m asked by most folks is, “which was your favorite stop?” And that’s a damn hard question to answer but I think I have to say it’s the Grand Canyon. . Yes, this was my third time seeing it, but that stunning view never ceases to somehow thrill and calm at the same time. It’s beautiful any time of day, and is accessible to any kind of person, regardless of their physical abilities. . This time we also had the best campsite the North Rim has to offer and were able to roll out of bed, walk across our site and down a slope to the edge of the canyon itself. It felt like our own little secret, without other folks around. . So yeah, I have to pick the Grand Canyon, despite all of the other wonders we witnessed. 🌞🌧Okay guys, it’s that time. I’ll be taking the weekend to pack and prep for my trip, so I’m officially signing off this account today! See you in 6 weeks! 🚙🏔🏕 (late June/early July!) . In case you’ve missed it, I’m going on a bucket-list, often-dreamed-about adventure with my partner @jordamn42 that will cover about 7500 miles of desert 🏜 mountains 🏔 forests 🌲 and coastlines 🏝 , 9 states, and 19 National Parks. The trip will be 41 days in total, with 33 in a rented campervan. We decided to just go for it, after such an awful year and realizing that you never really know what’s coming down the line for you. I’m very grateful that the nature of my job allows me to do this, and especially for Jordan’s, since he has an in-house fabrication gig and they were okay with him taking this much time away. . 📱 And I’ve always found it to be super important to step away from social media when I’m traveling. You truly cannot rest and recover from burnout or live in the moment if you’re still attached to your phone and work. Put in those boundaries with coworkers, bosses and clients. It’ll be okay, it really will 🧡 .
