Writers: do you normally write female or male characters??

Recently I realized that, as a girl, most of my characters are usually boys. That let me to question why I was doing that, and I think it's because it kinda gives me a sense of freedom. Like, as a writer, I'm intrigued to explore different perspectives and worlds I wouldn't be able to in real life, so I guess writing male characters is kind of my "what would it be like being a boy?". So now, out of curiosity I want to see if this happens to any of you or you just like to write from what you know.

#hm trick question #most of my mcs are male #but most of my *characters* are female #in my current wip I have 2 male mcs and 3 male secondary characters (not counting less imporant ones) #and 6 female secondary characters #if we'd count less important characters and also book 2 characters #it'd skew even more #lol

Here this goes! I'm finally getting back into writing and today I posted the much worked over introduction to my multi piece series, following Zepharah, my Tav from BG3, through her adventure. Go ahead and give it a look if you're interested! It's been really fun to write again and I'm really invested in this lol. More chapters and updates to come.

push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.

push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.

get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.

stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.

buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.

strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.

organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.

have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.

message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.

think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.

become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.

lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.

I'm being good, and actually working on Blood Enforcer the follow up to Blood Harmony. I've only written 20k so far, but hopefully, I've gotten enough to share some snips from! (Disclaimer- reader, I had to go back to the first story to find a snippet that contained the phrase 'subject' . I was too hopeful!)

Arm:

“Would you be as so kind as to not fidget as much?” Arnauld whispered softly into my ear, squeezing my arm ever so slightly.  “I don’t know why you even want me to wear this. I’m supposed to be your Enforcer. They’re not going to take me seriously. Anton gets to wear his normal clothes. Why can’t I?”  “Because Anton doesn't have the decolletage to pull off a sweetheart neckline like you do,” Arnauld gave me a tense smile, his eyes flashing in warning. “And because I don’t want them to take you seriously. Not yet.”

Subject:

“You’re not eating your food,” she hastily changed the subject. “You were so close to death, that we didn’t think you were going to make it. It’s a good thing that Arnauld brought you here to me. After I left, I went to college and trained as a nurse, so I was able to take care of you.”

Learn:

“But I just got warmed up!” She pouted at me, sticking her lip out in a childish fashion. It probably worked for other people, but not on me. “I wanted to learn how to defend myself. And it’s a free judo lesson! You don’t want me to be defenseless, do you?”

Incapable Unable :

We fell into an awkward silence. I tried to go back to reading the file, but it was no use.  “I’ll go in,” I sighed, unable to bear the silence any further. “See what I can find out.”

HA this made me laugh lol. I don't often answer questions of this type as I just. don't know what to say most of the time lol, but in this case, I had actually thought about this before lmaoo

Endra would definitely have a tumblr blog. he's the kind of guy who'd probably be chronically online tbh. as for the URL, it'd be something stupid, I think. a pun, maybe? like, onthatcateine (get it..because..cat...caffeine...idk guys). and he'd definitely be in fandoms. I'm thinking, like, gaming fandoms? he has that vibe idk can't explain it lol. he'd get into dramas, too - he'd be one of those messy blogs with hot takes that are reeeally either hit or miss lol. I think he'd also have another blog for more chill stuff, like art and music where he would be more normal

as for Quil, I honestly can barely imagine him on social media LOL, and certainly not tumblr hahaha. maybe instagram? but if he'd have to have tumblr, it'd probably be one of those study blogs lol, maybe even with some ✨aesthetic✨ thrown in. he'd also probably participate in general discussions about Science and stuff. he'd know better than to get messy/controversial online 🤨 as for URL, idk, he prob wouldn't try particularly hard and it'd be some play on his name lol. I mean, Quil, quill... something could be done there but I am out of ideas soz

oh gosh, that's a tough one haha. I think... okay, I really fuck with unreliable narrators. that's a vague one, but, y'know. give me a story where I can't trust it!! please<3 this one's a bit more controversial, but I really really like time-travel. and alternate realities. it's really cool if it has a solid logic behind it, but I'll probably like it even if it doesn't lol. I'm also just... sooo fascinated by necromancy. like, that's a very reliable way to get me hooked on any story lol. 'this has necromancy' I am Seated. the more fucked up, the better. I don't want necromancy with no consequences, no thank youu. (I want any kind of magic with consequences, but that's a whole other topic lol.) on the topic of necromancy - the personification of Death. a million times yes. and if you have both Death and Life?? I am so sold. something about Death being something tangible just gets to me, idk.

I've got more, but this is already getting long lmaoo, so yea, guess those would be the main ones?

doomed by the narrative but not to death. doomed to survive. doomed to stay alive inside the story. doomed to never escape the narrative, not even through death. you are allowed no exit. there is no way out for you and there never was. you couldn’t die if you wanted to. the narrative has a hold on you and it won’t let go. death is too sweet a doom for you. the story has something much worse in mind. there is no way out.

oh my gosh, both of these sound SUPER cool and I would totally be down for either

but also, nothing hooks me quite as fast as necromancy, so I may be a bit biased towards the first idea hahaha. mentor-protegee dynamics are also SOOOO up my alley (give me super wholesome, give me super fucked up, I don't care, just GIVE ME THEM). and, listen, self-indulgent stories are, imo, the best. you can tell the author had a ton of fun and then you end up having a ton of fun, too lol

Hi! I'm not dead! In fact, the opposite. My wife had our baby, and he's beautiful and perfect, but also keeping me *very* busy. We're also planning to move soon. Yes, with a new baby.

Add to this - my brain is like, what if we had a bunch of new plot ideas for romantasy projects?

me: but brain, we have editing to do on our existing projects. Like Prairie Weather, and The Foundling City, and Monsters and Fools... brain: BUT NEW SHINY SPARKLIES!

As someone who has been living with severe suicidal ideation my entire life I wanna tell you all something, you don’t have to stay alive for yourself. People will say it’s a bad idea to live for external things because they’re temporary, and it’s true living for yourself is ideal but if you’re not to that point yet that’s ok too. 

I’ve lived for my dog for the past 4 years, before that I lived for my snakes, before that I lived for my cat. You can live for whatever needs you and whatever matters to you. Live for your best friend, live for your plants, live for your pets, live for your animal crossing town. Live for whatever keeps you alive and the day will come when you can live for yourself.
