a post-doc was doing a guest seminar at my institute and at the beginning of his presentation he was explaining why he chose birds for his evolutionary analysis - so he said "well first of all, because birds are the best and most interesting animals and it's fun to study them" and a few professors in the room gave him a very serious nod

ffxiv is not a video game it is a disease. brain fungus of some sort. makes you stop wanting to kill yourself repairs your relationship to god and also makes you inordinately fond of catboys and shit. IF! you are exposed long enough. that's why the free trial is so generous. it's like getting addicted to a drug that genuinely loves you and makes you a better and stronger and happier person. and who loves catboys also. unreal

AITA for telling a guy to go touch some grass?
(This is a very minor issue, but I can't stop thinking about it, and I need to know if I was out of line...)
I (25F) am in my first year at an art school. I was working on a project at the school outside of class hours when we started chatting with the other students working there.
Another guy from the school (2nd or 3rd year, idk, I had never talked to him before) asked me to come see his artwork on tablet, which he was proud of. I got up excited to see it. It was a woman in anime style, very sexualized: very big curves, defined abs, low cleavage, etc. It immediately made me uncomfortable, but I tried my best to remain polite. I said something along the lines of "Oh, that's nice, you have good skills... maybe you should go touch some grass, though, but the technique is great!" And then I went back to work on my project.
Later on, when the dude left, a classmate (20M) who had witnessed the earlier exchange told me I had been "very rude and harsh" towards him.
I think the dude was the senseless one. I don't even know his name, I barely had registered his face at the school, and he shows me such a drawing. But maybe it's because I don't watch that kind of anime? AITA?

person who has only watched one anime: what i really love about dungeon meshi is how it subverts our expectations of a typical anime by not sexualising women and having a good plot!

While I think there's something to be said for choosing kindness / having the option of avoiding violence / forgoing your role as a machine of war, I do wish we got to see more of Jill being ruthless as she was when returning to Drake's Breath
I've posted before about her role in FFXVI's themes of revenge, and how refreshing that a concept typically used as a "cautionary tale" not only has little consequences for the characters but also is dealt with empathy and provides relief to many.
But I also think her scene with Imreann was one of the clearest examples of how she is a character you do not want to cross. Cold ice queen archetype aside, someone who may seem unassuming but will remorselessly flay you when given the chance. She battles methodically and could easily hold her own against most enemies had the curse not affected her so
I guess it's just another result of her having a less active role as the story goes on. As much as the reason of her declining health due to her Eikon being abused makes sense, I wonder if it was wholly necessary to include or if they couldn't have given her a few more comparable moments, though I'm glad she gets that focus in some scenes

actual criticisms of academia:
cost of education acting as class barrier
exploitation of graduate workers
colonialist past and present
ties to military industrial complex
danger of power structure entrenching and justifying orthodox views on social issues
criticisms of academia that get made:
those damn ivory tower academics are wasting money learning about things
