Nerdy Mod Post

Just thought that I would give everyone a summary of the October Challenge, because I am a nerd at heart and did a spreadsheet by day, by contributor, by story. 16 creative people contributed a total of 74 fics, art, edits, and moodboards.

Open Heart must be very popular because 45 of the posts were for it. There were 9 Red Carpet Diaries posts; and 3 each for Save the Date and Mother of the Year. We had 2 submissions for The Royal Romance, Platinum, and Hollywood U. We even had 1 crossover of Hollywood U and Open Heart. There were one submission each for America's Most Eligible, Big Sky Country, Blades of Light and Shadows, Desire and Decorum, Ride or Die, The Freshman Series, and Veil of Secrets. Nine of them were also NSFW/kinktober cross-overs.

We had 16 participants who submitted, and they will be tagged at the end.

Let me call out a few right here.

@lem-20 - you posted two submissions. Thank you for keeping me honest. For some reason I managed to lose both of yours after I reblogged them and did the master list. Thank you for reminding me.

@dr-colossal-pita - You gave us our only male MC in Open Heart this month. You said it had been a long break for you to write any fanfiction. Welcome back.

@starrystarrytrouble - Ruby, I love you. There were a few times I was having trouble keeping up with things and you always seemed to know when I needed a message to cheer me up.

@aarisa-frost - You submitted the first post and gave me a total of 19 fanarts for the month. Thank you.

And finally, @theartoflovingthomashunt (aka @storyofmychoices) - Thank you. The monthly challenge is your baby and I appreciate you letting me be in charge for a month. Again, as with Ruby, thank you for being a great cheerleader when I needed it (whether you knew it or not.) Also, I have VIP and I was able to read through two books during October because I fell in love with your fics from Mother of the Year and Save the Date.

Just A Smile Turned Upside Down

So, I’m finally putting this out there - it’s been almost 20 years since I last wrote fanfiction, but Open Heart has put so many ideas into my head, that I just had to have a go again. It didn’t take too long to write the bulk of it, but adding a few details and adjustments until I was happy enough was tough (particularly trying to find the time to truly focus on it!) Trying to get this actually posted though, proved to be the most difficult part of all! Let’s just say that I can relate to Ethan a little with regards to social media… 😌

I am very happy to welcome any constructive critic if you have some to offer, please do not be shy! Though, if you hate it, just say it’s not your thing and trot off to something else which is! No hard feelings 😎

1. Intern Year

Ethan resisted a groan as an atrocious, remixed version of The Monster Mash blared through the speakers, eliciting a cheer from the drunken crowd. Characteristically, he pinched the bridge of his nose, eyes shut as he wondered why he decided to venture out on the worst night of the year. Perhaps he needed a drink that badly after another full day of dealing with interns.  

“Time for a refill, Dr. Ramsey,” a voice said over the music.

Ethan hated the way his pulse quickened at the sound.

Characters: Alex, Thomas Hunt Book: Red Carpet Diaries Word Count: approx 3,000 🙈 Prompt: party - @choicesoctoberchallenge2020 Notes: I know this is way longer than anything I’ve written in a long time, but I still hope you give it a chance and I hope you enjoy it. It is a Halloween inspired story.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, his eyes closing at the pandemonium surrounding him. Colorful lights flashed while a cacophony of sounds filled the air. Drowning out the thumping bass of the music and the aimless blather of conversation was nearly impossible. This was the worst part of his job. The required self-promotion and appearances in order to stay relevant. Why should he need to pander to them? Shouldn’t the work speak for itself? Not a single soul at that party could hold his interest, let alone hope to match his intellect in order to have a meaningful conversation. 

It wasn’t their fault, not entirely at least. They didn’t know better. They were a mere product of the society they lived in, or at least what semblance of such a concept passed today. His upbringing had afforded him with different experiences that had led to the high ground on which he now occupied. However, if he were to be completely honest with himself, he’d always felt like a man out of time, even then. 

Thomas was jolted back to the tumultuous party as a guest crashed into him. He shifted the tumbler of scotch in his grasp away from him just in time to protect it from spilling. A low rumble of annoyance growled in his throat. He took a sip of the drink, letting it linger on his tongue, though it no longer gave him the same sense of satisfaction it once had. His gaze continuously fell on the timepiece on his wrist, watching the minutes tick by until he could leave. With one last swig, he finished the caramel-colored liquor and made his way toward the exit. 

For the first time in far too long, he felt his heart skip a beat at the sight of her. It was a sensation, he never expected to feel again, and not one he could even explain; and yet, for a moment, when his eyes met hers from across the room, something in him changed. He was drawn to her like a moth to a flame.

Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.

He had always admired the works of Shakespeare but had never understood that sentiment until that moment. This chance encounter was somehow unlike anything he’d ever known before.
