FLEET: Hey, I uh. I got something for you.
CLARA: Fleet, you bought me a present? Is this because I saved your life again? Or is it for my birthday- which you should know, if you want to write it down, is April-
FLEET: Open it.
CLARA: So it's not for my birthday.
FLEET: Open it.
CLARA: April 15th.
FLEET: Open it!
Victoriocity, Season 2 Episode 7 - SMS Brandenburg
A very happy 163rd(?) birthday to Clara Entwhistle.

PSA: Don't use Open Office
I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.
Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.
Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!

I've been thinking about it again lately and felt the need to second this recommendation. If I can add anything:
it's a rare example of good, original sci-fi that does not give you a mindf*ck, which makes it a great bedtime read
if you're into that "humans are weird" trend that was making the rounds on tumblr a couple years ago, these novels are a goldmine
the author loves describing ever absurdities that arise from living on a space station that's a multi-species hospital. My favourites include: one of the MCs having a well-founded suspicion that he's a got a brontosaurus allergy and the removed appendix of the chief psychologist's being used as a prize in a chess tournament
most characters strike just the right balace between being nerdy and soft, and incredibly tough and resilient in times of crisis
Genuinely, if you're looking to get into sci-fi but don't know where to start, I really do recommend Sector General.
The characters are kind but not bland, it's written in a VERY appealing and easy to digest style, and the setting is so much fun!

Grabiański, Malczewski for the ask game?
Grabiński: There's just so many to choose from... I was lucky enough to inherit a copy of Andersen's fairytales illustrated by Jan Marcin Szancer and his art was probably the only reason I made it trough most of these stories. There is this one drawing for The Old Street Lamp that I'd just love to have on my wall... Also, I'm a life-long fan of Bohdan Butenko. The man could make any topic fun.
Malczewski: Not specifically, but it was generally agreed upon at uni that I've got a Late Gothic/Northern Renaissance look, especially if I wrap something around my head. And I would gladly wander through one of those early landscapes in the background of Jan van Eyck's or Rogier van der Weyden's paintings.
@tauremornalome Dzięki za ten pomysł, jest genialny!

Just learned about garden path sentences.
They’re basically a literary prank– the sentence starts out in such a way that you think you know where it’s going, but the way it ends completely changes the meaning while still being a complete and logical sentence. Usually it deals with double meanings, or with words that can be multiple parts of speech, like nouns and verbs or nouns and adjectives.
So we get gems like
The old man the boat. (The old people are manning the boat)
The complex houses married and single soldiers and their families. (The apartment complex is home to both married and single soldiers, plus their families)
The prime number few. (People who are excellent are few in number.)
The cotton clothing is usually made of grows in Mississipi. (The cotton that clothing is made of)
The man who hunts ducks out on weekends. (As in he ducks out of his responsibilities)
We painted the wall with cracks. (The cracked wall is the one that was pained.)
