new headcanon based on that post about competitive/jealous Peeta. once in a while he will have a regular nightmare but this time it’s about being back in district 12 and katniss ending up with gale and not knowing him. maybe he wakes up and is just so thankful that his favorite person loves him back and their relationship is better than he even dreamed of back when he was a kid. also a good opportunity for katniss to tell him she thinks they would have happened anyway and was noticing him for years 🥺

In response to this post.

The idea of Peeta finding out that Katniss completely believes that, no matter what. No matter where, no matter when - they were ALWAYS going to happen, has me in TEARS.

Just picturing this boy, this unwanted third child, the spare's spare - coming first to nobody in his life - watching this girl sing and hearing MAGIC in the air - grow into a young man that hears the person he loves tell him - "it was always going to be you for me"?

TEARS.

On a separate note, something I also want to explore him finding out - that she agreed to become the Mockingjay for HIM. I just don't think that's focused on enough.

We focus on how she volunteered for the games to die for love of Prim. We talk about how Peeta volunteered for the games to die for love of Katniss. But we just DONT talk enough about how Katniss gave up her privacy and her PERSONHOOD to become The Mockingjay FOR LOVE OF PEETA.

Her family was safe. She owed these people nothing. She even thinks to herself that if she knew, if she just knew that Peeta was dead, she would leave her family in the care of 13 and just...walk off into the woods forever.

But she doesn't. Instead she agrees to give over everything she has in her to give. Everything she NEVER WANTED TO GIVE. All because Peeta is ALIVE and she can help get him back. Can help protect him.

I NEED to know what would happen when Peeta learns about all this. (and about that fucking PEARL because the pseudo-sexual symbolism of the pearl drives me INSANE and I NEED HIM TO KNOW IT)

Interesting little thing to ponder is what Katniss’ mom thought of Peeta vs Gale because she knew Gale better and probably imagined Katniss would end up with him. So like the anthethisis to Haymitch

What I find fascinating about this is how Mrs. Everdeen herself was part of a love triangle and one of the men included Peeta's father! So how much was she projecting and how much did she see as someone who went through it? I will say that at least, she didn't seem to greatly favor either but it seems like she might have slightly favored Gale? At least, she gave Katniss an out to not be so into the PDA with Peeta and then after Gale's whipping pointed out that's what people do when people they love are hurt. (two which Katniss hilariously replies: "Where's Peeta?") She might have seen the Games as forcing Katniss with Peeta, and wanted her daughter to be able to choose who she loved, as Mrs. Everdeen would certainly relate to that.

In the end, I think Mrs. Everdeen would've been fine with either (though admittedly Peeta would have added some awkwardness) but at least to start, Gale was more favored than Peeta until Mrs. Everdeen realized "oh...actually, my daughter's in love with the baker's son."

Leaving my everlark feelings aside, when I rewatched the movies, I felt as they emphasized Katniss's heroism and all the other characters are there to support her “badassness”. Seriously, movie!Katniss is almost a saint.

The romance is a important part of the story (you really don’t have to like it but accept it does have role in the storyline).

Both Peeta and Gale lost their agency on the movies adaptation, what is upsetting.

But… the movies did nice additions in political terms.

Hot take but I DONT think that the Hunger Games movies overemphasized the love triangle in the original story. I think the movies portrayed exactly as much romance as there was in the books and the fandom overemphasized the love triangle because the movies were marketed towards teenage girls and that’s just what teenage girls did back then. Rewatching the movies makes me wonder what people are talking about when they criticize them for being “too focused on the romance” like seriously are you mad at the movies or are you mad because when they came out all anyone could talk about was Peeta vs Gale.

I am convinced that the more I reread the trilogy, the more down bad Katniss just seems. Like, look at this

Her mother literally just said "someone they love", talking about Gale, and despite that whole paragraph of her thoughts regarding her feeling for Gale, what she actually says in reply is "Where's Peeta". Making subconscious connections about love there, Katniss?

"You've seen how people are, when someone they love is in pain" (Gale literally injured on the table)

"Where's Peeta?"

And this is immediately after

"There's a long pause."

Like girl, hang up, tf?! You just listening to him breathe? Lol.

Fair enough. I think Katniss appearance is debatable, like 50/50.

Second Katniss, she isn’t good looking, but we can’t trust in any thing she says about herself.

Hijacked Peeta was salty/ pissed with her, so we don’t know if he really meant it. Plus, MJ Katniss for sure is in the worst condition. She didn’t sleep well, is stressed, heartbroken and depressed. All those factors doesn’t put her in the best shape, what may have influenced Peeta's judgment.

For Haymitch, she isn’t attractive at all, but again, he is biased as well (and was annoyed with Katniss when said that).

Peeta said on the first interview other guys were into Katniss (what can be a lie or an exaggeration), but judging how subtle his jealousy is he probably took this idea from somewhere.

And Darius (Thorm I don’t remember correctly) flirted with her (as joke? We can’t be sure).

But I think Katniss had (in some degree) physical appeal.

Here me out: Virgin Peeta

I know the fandom have a preference to headcanon Peeta as someone popular with girls cause he is canonically so nice and had a lot of friends. But I imagine him being so inexperienced as Katniss.

Kisses

I dare to say Katniss was Peeta first kiss too. I know some people will point out that there is evidence to deny this. But lets consider Katniss never was very clinical in describe their kissed (what make sense, since the sexual tension is a subtle element in the books). But we can't deduce their second kiss on cave was guide for Peeta, proving he's done this before. It is the kiss that made she want more, but this can be just her sexual awaking.

And let's remember Peeta didn't consider Katniss never kiss before. Even in the second book, after all those kisses, he asked if she kissed Gale only once. So, the kisses aren't good because the kisser's ability, they are good cause their are from the beloved one.

Katniss liked Peeta's kisses because she liked Peeta.

Charming and flirting

Right, Katniss never say it out to us neither to herself how attractive Peeta is to her. And judging other people perception about Peeta, he is probably a guy with an ordinary appearance (while Katniss, indeed, always was an attractive person, if she was so alike Gale, of course she was pretty).

So I think our perception about Peeta advances are filter by Katniss interesting on him. In fact, Peeta can be an inexperienced boy imitating the way his brothers and friends flirted. Maybe, for other people, Peeta approach would sound awkward, but for Katniss, everything fit perfectly.

Conclusion

I do think Peeta is charming, funny and attractive for real, but for me he kinda fit the role of a guy friend. Someone girls enjoy the company but prefer him just as a friend cause for them Peeta didn't have the physical appeal or just isn't their type (while for Katniss is literally perfect)

André dumped his drink in Girodelle’s face when Girodelle suggested he take Oscar for a wife & allow her to keep André as “a servant [...] who yearns for her” in his home. André fell crying in the dirt because he can’t present himself as a suitor to Oscar, because he isn’t noble.

Andre wants to be with her honestly and openly, not be a dirty little secret or watch her marry another man (“Did God leave me with this one eye to see that?! Just to see you become another man’s?!”)... but cannot, due to his lesser status in society. Oscar's father is his master, too...

Even when Oscar’s father allowed it (wistfully and reluctantly, "If only you were a noble…"), their marriage was still only in secret.

Nobility need royal permission to marry commoners, it seems, and this is touched upon in the story of Oscar's parents (when the General believed his wife-to-be was only a commoner, rather than a poorer noble), and Osar's a renegade… but, their household considered them married and Oscar told others on the battlefield that they were married. She even seemed to think that when the revolution was over, they'd officially be married.

... it was not to be, alas. Even if it isn't official, Oscar and Andre consider themselves a married couple.

everyone likes to talk about how Katniss was oblivious about her feelings for Peeta, but no one talks about how Peeta himself was aswell. like bro was absolutely clueless. Katniss would drop so many hints (unconsciously), that everyone else would pick up on, yet Peeta was like “Oh she’s not inlove with me and probably never will be so it’s no use me being alive because she wouldn’t want to be with me anyway, so i’ll die and then she can finally be happy without being tied down to me” You are both head over heels inlove with eachother like come on now, stop the bullshit.

Katniss says she'll be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies

Katniss tells Peeta she needs him

They share a long intense kiss that makes Katniss feel sexual desire for him

Peeta says she's going to be a great mother and Katniss, unprompted, internally states that she'll never have Gale's child (lmao)

Katniss thinks Peeta should be a father because of who he is as a person

Katniss falls asleep fantasizing about a future where Peeta's child is safe in a meadow

Katniss wakes up feeling happy due to Peeta, likely because she dreamed about him

Peeta gives Katniss the pearl

Katniss tells Peeta the locket worked because it made her more sure of her love for him and her decision to die for him

And then nothing happens after that because the book suddenly ends right there haha so weird
