Gaby Melian is on youtube! You may remember Gaby from Bon Appetit (she recently posted on IG that she’s left BA), and she’s now launched her new channel.
In this week’s video, Gaby is making Puchero Argentino:
Puchero is a type of stew originally from Spain, prepared in many countries from México to Argentina, and the Philippines too. The ingredients may vary, but the real secret like in any good homemade meal is to add a lot of love!
I highly recommend checking it out, and also read the comments, folks are talking about how they make a dish similar to Puchero in their part of the world.

BRAD LEONE STANS PLEASE COME TO THE FRONT OFFICE:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adam Rapoport was NOT the big issue of Bon Appetit! Brad Leone is NOT a himbo golden retriever nice guy! You should be pleased Delany isn’t in these videos, the fucker didn’t even get fired. Hunzi isn’t there because BA is a piece of shit and has been treating him like shit because he has morals! Your love for Brad despite his complicity, ignorance, and the actively racist company he is willingly working for is not good! It’s not cute! Please get your shit in together!

so BA is back and afaik they're still brushing everything that happened under the rug rather than fixing the problem. here's a reminder to not give them your money by watching their videos and instead support sohla and all the other chefs and editors of color who left BA video due to unfair wages and racist treatment.
sohla's instagram + stump sohla
priya's instagram + indian-ish
rick's instagram
gaby's instagram
hawa's instagram + in bibi's kitchen
christina's instagram
if i forgot anyone, or if you guys know other ways to direct your support towards them, feel free to add on!
edit: removed carla (she's white, my bad), added hawa and christina (did not know that they left BA Video)

with everything that’s going on with bon apetit, i thought i’d just share some of my favorite recipe-based youtube channels run by people of color
just one cookbook - a super wide variety of japanese recipes. easy step-by-steps and all the recipes i’ve tried have been delicious
souped up recipes -  chinese recipes - very informative videos and tasty food - i love her personality too
maangchi - who doesn’t love maangchi. delicious korean recipes and a fabulous personality
get curried - a huge variety of recipes from various regions of india
simply mama cooks - my fav for tejano food. i believe she’s a mexicana married into a korean family, and draws a lot from that
immaculate bites - mostly quick ‘tasty’ style video recipes focusing on southern us, african, and carribean foods. easy and delicious stuff!
stove top kisses - fun and delicious recipes and the videos are super fun to watch - mostly american food
j kenji lopez alt - author of the book ‘the food lab’ - he’s maybe my favorite recipe developer out there. all kinds of food and hes super knowledgeable

A list of my favorite POC/international cooking channels, if you no longer want to support Bon Appetit:
De Mi Rancho A Tu Cocina: an abuela from Michuacán shows you how to make DELICIOUS rancho food and occasionally shows you scenes from around the rancho.
Doña Lupita: Another abuela, this time from Guerrero, making incredible-looking food over a comal
Simply Mamá Cooks: Tejano woman with a Korean-American husband makes recipes from both cultures, great for classic easy-to-make weeknight comfort food recipes, too
Li Ziqi: a real-life Disney princess from Sichuan who shows you how to make sauce with duck egg yolks, starting with hatching the ducks that lay the eggs
Dianxi Ziaoge:  another Chinese farm girl, she shows you her idyllic life in rural Yunnan as she makes food with her HUGE RIDICULOUS FUFFYBOI, Dawang, often joining her on adventures
Wild Girl: Yet another Chinese farm girl, this time from Guizhou, who has a little bit more of an emphasis on cooking with food foraged from her gorgeous surroundings
Catch The Sea Official: A young woman living in the fishing city of Rizhao, foraging her own seafood and then cooking it up. I could watch her squeeze the water out of cat’s eye turban snails all day.
Cooking with Sros, Sros Yummy Cooking Vlog: Sros makes delicious Cambodian food with a warm, sunny personality and a great accent!
Am Thuc Me Lam: A son who videos his mother farming and cooking in rural Vietnam
Traditional Me: Young woman in rural Sri Lanka lives with her grandmother and brother, makes incredible looking food set to jaunty music with lush scenery
Village Cooking Channel: Five VERY ENTHUSIASTIC Tamil men make large batches of food for their local old age home.
Veg Village Food: Punjabi Sikh granny makes huge batches of vegetarian food for local needy children.
Desi Food Recipes: Soothing Indian granny shows you how to make classic Desi dishes in non-giant size proportions
Maangchi: The Julia Child of Korean food, everyone fucking loves Maangchi
Jun’s Kitchen: Japanese guy makes food with his cats, what’s not to love?
Stove Top Kisses: Southern soul food served up with a fun, bubbly personality

The Proskauer Rose investigation is complete, and they did not uncover “evidence that race played a factor in setting compensation for any video team members”. (Proskauer Rose being a law firm notorious for union-busting.)
With the conclusion of this investigation, Alex Delany and Matt Hunziker’s suspensions are over.
This article includes a full memo sent to Bon Appétit staff on Friday.

I’d like to point out one thing in this statement -
“Some of my colleagues in the test kitchen have been publicly supportive but privately complicit, even helping to interview BIPOC video candidates they know will be underpaid.”
This lends much credence to the allegations raised by @tammieetc on Twitter:

i was just curious to see what effect, if any, the news about BIPOC employees at BA not getting equal compensation compared with their white colleagues had on their views/subscribers........... it’s honestly underwhelming imo (i used social blade for this analysis so i’m taking everything w/ a grain of salt lol)
they lost around 30k subscribers over 3 days (0.5% of their 6M total subscribers count), only to gain 10k back within 2 days.
their daily view count has been dropping steadily since everything initially went down on 6/8. their daily average view count in the past month has been 1.4mil. yesterday’s view count of 0.67mil is just 48%of that.
^^this probably has everything to do with the fact that their last upload was on 6/5, three days before sohla’s IG story
they’re pretty much almost back to what their sub count was before everything happened
they’re still continuing to make money from their uploads, despite not having posted anything new for over 2 weeks. what that exact amount is remains a mystery, but the fact of the matter is that enough people are still engaging with their videos that they can continue to make money from content that is exploitative of their bipoc employees.
please continue to boycott BA’s videos / unsubscribe. they haven’t announced any plan of action to fairly compensate their BIPOC employees so why continue supporting them?

[Duckor] was the problem, to be honest. I think he was a much bigger problem than Adam. The one that only wanted Priya to make Indian food. And since we’ve been working from home, I’ve been shooting more videos than ever. And since we’re doing it on our own, we’re the sound guy, we’re the video guy, we’re the food stylist, we’re the dishwasher. So it’s like… significant amount of work. And every week I keep telling them, “When are you gonna pay me? Like, when are you gonna pay me?” And I have a talk with Duckor like once a week, he looks me through the Zoom eye, and he tells me, “Coming tomorrow, I swear, it’s tied up in legal, it’s coming tomorrow. Just finish this shoot.” And he did that to me for months.
