I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news for Mary Linton fans, but both Mary and Dutch are manipulative and toxic towards Arthur (in the exact same ways as each other) because they’re supposed to mirror each other and show how Arthur is swayed by external factors for the majority of his life until he finally figures out how to do things that HE believes in and that HE wants to do, and anyone ignoring the fact that they are both shitty people that influence his state of mind is ignoring not only a key part of Arthur’s character arc but also the main point of the RDR franchise which is that morals are not black and white and everyone is capable of being shitty or good no matter what their role in society is

Not to be dramatic but the scene where Arthur watches the train depart is an analogy of how he's frozen in time while Mary's life (as well as that of everyone else) keep on going
