Always zine is available now!
I just want to say a massive thank you to @portalpanda, Sam and everyone behind-the-scenes who helped put together the Always zine in memory of Cindy Morgan! It must have been a colossal task and Panda managed it all with grace and patience. The zine looks amazing! I'm looking forward to spending some time going through all the art and stories of the creators involved. Well done, everyone! Remember, donations to the zine will go towards Girls Who Code, which is a very worthwhile cause, Programs! cindymorganzine.itch.io/always

Donations are not required to download the zine, but any amount is greatly appreciated. All contributions will be donated to Girls Who Code in Cindy Morgan’s name.
Thank you so much to everyone who supported this project, whether you sent in a piece or helped spread the word. We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love you’ve shown for Cindy, and this zine would not be possible without you. We hope you love the final product as much as we do. 💙

Always Zine Fic Previews
Hey there! I’m a head mod for Always (@cindymorganzine), a Cindy Morgan memorial zine, and I wrote three fics for the zine—one for each of Cindy’s characters. Each of my stories is also illustrated, thanks to @3-inch-sam, @rexwrendraws and @mousesketches. Here’s a little sneak peek of each fic! I hope you’ll consider checking them out in the full zine, which comes out this Friday (April 19th). Any and all contributions to the zine will be donated to Girls Who Code in Cindy Morgan’s name.

Ladies' Night: A TRON Ficlet (PREVIEW)
This is a preview of my piece that will appear in Always: A Cindy Morgan Zine (@cindymorganzine). The zine is out this Friday, April 19th on itch.io for pay what you can, with all proceeds going to Girls Who Code!
Without further ado, here is the preview of my piece....
----
Meanwhile, in a universe where Kevin Flynn trusted his friends enough to tell them the truth…
After a long day of teaching classes, the last thing Lora wanted was to spend another eight subjective hours on the Grid with Alan and Flynn. But she’d promised Yori she’d rez in at least once this week, and it was already Thursday. She downed a cup of coffee from the carafe Flynn kept in his basement office, and joined her husband and their best friend in front of the digitizer.
Tron and Yori met them at the Portal output in the city. Tron pulled Flynn and Alan aside at once, leaving Lora standing next to her program, unsure of what to say. Yori, for her part, looked a little nervous herself.
It had been nearly three months since they’d first met in person, if that was even the right term for what meeting someone inside a computer system really was. Lora still found herself astounded by this place, and even more by her experience of it, which was somehow not subjective but instead objective—what she saw was what Alan and Flynn saw, a truth written in code.
Even more perplexing to Lora’s mind was Yori, the program she’d written for the digitizer’s first iteration. It had taken some getting used to, seeing her own face looking back at her, and hearing her own voice answer her questions. But Yori was no mere copy. They had the same playful energy at times, true, but Yori seemed to be more reserved and careful, while Lora was more willing to take risks to get results. They still agreed more often than not, but Lora bet there were things about Yori she still didn’t know.

A sneak-peek of a brand new Yori: Hidden artwork, created by me, that will appear in the Always zine by @cindymorganzine! In my latest piece, get ready for a surprise guest! My previous Yori: Hidden art will also be presented in the zine, so it's a great way to see all the Yori: Hidden art in one place! You can download the zine on itch.io this Friday 19 April! All donations will go towards Girls Who Code. The zine will contain Cindy Morgan, Yori, Lora Baines and Ma3a inspired art and stories. I can't wait to see what everyone else has created to celebrate Cindy's life. It's going to be great to see how Cindy, and the characters she portrayed, affected us!

Someone at tumblr/automattic asked whether requests to opt out of "AI" data sharing would be honored retroactively (which seems important, seeing as tumblr has apparently compiled the user data they're going to send *before* giving any kind of opt-out option) and Automattic's head of "AI" Andrew Spittle responded:
We will notify existing partners on a regular basis about anyone who's opted out since the last time we provided a list. I want this to be an ongoing process where we regularly advocate for past content to be excluded based on current preferences. We will ask that content be deleted and removed from any future training runs. I believe partners will honor this based on our conversations with them to this point. I don't think they gain much overall by retaining it.
And I do not trust midjourney or openai in the slightest--their business models, by their own admission, depend on scraping art they don't have permission to use--so I do not believe that they will honor any requests to remove data already received when requests are made to remove it. So yeah. take that as you will.
Edit
about 20 minutes after I posted this, @staff put out this:
They do not acknowledge that they are definitely actually in the process of selling your data to third parties, but they have a setting which (they claim) will prevent them from sharing information with third parties, including "AI" training businesses.
I've turned it on, but tumblr has burned so much trust that I really don't have faith that tumblr will actually change the package of information that will be provided to these third parties based on the setting: tumblr/automattic must know that "AI" art theft is tremendously unpopular with a huge portion of tumblr, and that having this setting (even with a "you must know about it to use it" opt out setting) will result in a bunch of users setting their unintuitive "don't share with third parties" setting to "on" which will diminish the value of the sale.
I don't think tumblr will honor this setting.

My roommate, in her infinite wisdom, commented a few weeks ago that I had begun to say "man" more often after watching Tron.
Later, while driving home from work, bitterly thinking about her comment, I wondered:
"Does CLU sometimes talk like Flynn by accident and get mad about it?"
And that's the explanation behind this comic. I hope you enjoy it, man.
Tron lives!

I was sorting through the files on my external HD and discovered this buried in the TRON folder. Wish I could remember the artist's name, but I saved it a decade ago and never changed the file name. They were part of the TRON RP group I was in. I remember that much because this is art that they made for me of the version of Sam I was writing at the time.
Those whales? Are Sam's. They are anti-viral programs he designed to clean up the Sea of Simulation. I can't quite remember their names now, and those names never came up in play, but I think they were named after the space shuttles: Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavor. Don't remember why he went with those names anymore either but. Maybe Quorra named them. They cleaned the Sea by filtering the virus from it and were the test group to determine how efficient the process was.
Endeavor is probably the one investigating him. The 'Big Guys' were generally docile so Sam had little to fear from them even if he wasn't their User. The Sharks he designed to act as their Security detail were uh, not so friendly. Definitely made sure to flag Users as non-threats after his first in-person encounter with an overprotective Shark detail.
(There were other types of "Grid animals" he was experimenting with at the time as well. Sometimes, animals just do certain tasks better than human-shaped entities. And Quorra just really liked playing Fetch with the dogs, okay?)
Perhaps some day I'll go back and write a fic with them or something.

Greetings, programs! There’s only one month left to submit your work to the Always Zine! Please remember to read the guidelines carefully before submitting your final piece(s).
A few other quick things while we have your attention:
If you’ve written something for the zine and you’d like us to beta read it, please reach out to us sooner rather than later! We’re happy to help, but things are about to get much busier lol.
So far, the vast majority of submissions we’ve received have been art pieces focused on Yori. This is not a complaint! We love Yori!! But if you’re still deciding what to create, we’d love to see some love for Lora and Ma3a as well. So far we have not received any written pieces on or photos of Cindy, either. If you were lucky enough to meet Cindy and would be willing to share a photo or two, it would really mean a lot to us. We’d love for this zine to showcase how kind she was towards fans.
As usual, if you have any questions please message us here or email us at [email protected]. Thank you!
