You know what, I'm going to share something from Under No Illusions, because this weird little book has survived so many assassination attempts that I'm now convinced it's unkillable

When I open the door to my room, I walk headfirst into my very angry mother. I let out an extremely macho shriek. “What are you doing here?” “I live here.” “I mean in here.” Though she’s a foot shorter than my six-foot self, this woman knows how to loom. And that’s exactly what she does, looms, arms crossed and dark eyebrows pointed in a V. “Looking to see what other trouble you might’ve gotten into.” See, there was a small part of me that hoped that maybe, possibly, Mom entered my room because she wanted to do my laundry out of the goodness of her heart. Now I get the sense that’s not the case. I do a quick sweep of the area—the only questionable item in sight is a hoodie that says Mothman is my sugar daddy—and shut the door behind me. “Or we could talk about other things. Like, how was your day?” “Good until I saw a video of you prancing around Agnes Fillmore with bugs shooting from your hands!” I tuck a strand of hair into my bun. “I didn’t prance.”

wait hang on I want to add something serious (!) to this:

as annoying as this is, it's also something really good I've learned how to do. The first time I tried to write a novel I lived and died by "don't edit while writing" because that was literally the only way I managed to finish the thing. But now that I've been doing this for a while, I've gotten way better at A. recognizing when something is wrong and B. recognizing why something is wrong. I don't ALWAYS know what to do, but in times like my whiny example above? Yeah, that's a case of "aw dang, I know exactly how to fix this story problem, I just wish I'd realized it sooner"
