i realized the other day that jin guangyao from mdzs and ogata hyakunosuke from golden kamuy are very similar characters
they're both
born as the illegitimate son of a wealthy influential man and a sex worker
abandoned by their father
murder their father and step-brother
want to hold the same position as their father to prove that they're worth of it
changes sides of a war/battle when it's convenient for them
good at manipulating people into trusting them (especially ogata ppl literally know he's a serial traitor and trust him anyway)
good at acting pathetic

CAN WE TALK QI RONG?
And the fact that
Donghua team performed an OUTSTANDING JOB of a character study through animation
Like I’m watching him insult Lang QiangQui
And it suddenly hits me that I kinda understand and feel him???
Like Ke Mo
Even though he is wrong
He has a right to hate Yong An
Xie Lian has much more of it, but-
Have you ever thought that
We never get to know
How Qi Rong died?
Tumblr media
Even though he didn’t care for XianLe, it was his only home
So when you see him talk about this-
Tumblr media
You can see that underneath his arrogant hateful craziness
There is genuine pain
Tumblr media
Which he HIDES BEHIND SMILES
Tumblr media
HIS EXPRESSIONS KEEP SWITCHING
AND I APPLAUD THE DONGHUA TEAM FOR THIS DECISION
Tumblr media
He laughs in one second
Tumblr media
AND IN THE NEXT YOU SEE THIS
This GENUINE ANGER
Tumblr media
and a RIGHTFULL ONE AT THAT??
Tumblr media
No matter how deeply twisted everything about his mindset is
At its core it’s a lack of any established moral guidelines in his upbringing
And the worst coping mechanism of fighting pain, insecurities and fear of abandonment
By going batshit crazy in defense and grabbing onto everything that makes him seem “important”
Yet by doing so he succeeded in becoming so unimportant
That even his remaining family thought about him so little
That we never got an explanation of how he died
He definitely died alone
And at least for this
He has a right to feel angry
Because anger is just helpless pain

hey so we put your morally grey character in a fandom. yeah half the fanbase makes them into a perfect angel who did nothing wrong and the other half depicts them as a cartoonishly evil villain who hurts people for fun. no we dont know how to explain that people can do bad things for good reasons or good things for bad reasons. sorry man

something, something beefleaf parallels
He Xuan gains power when he can no longer change anything on behalf of his loved ones, he cannot save them, he cannot prevent their suffering. It's already happened.
This is mirrored by Shi Qingxuan who learns the truth when the wrong has been done. He can't fix it. He cannot repent the people who were wronged are long dead.

im not saying hua cheng is a bad guy or that he has any ill will towards xie lian when I say he’s a red flag. im saying that he shows up out of nowhere and starts following xie lian around, is hostile towards his friends, and hides things from him. especially in this particular scene, the evidence makes everyone other than xie lian very concerned. from the very beginning of the story there are countless obvious signs that hua cheng is in love with him but xie lian is bending over backwards to ignore them. he doesn’t want to assume things so he neglects to draw conclusions that seem obvious to others. that being said, feng xin and mu qing are the opposite. they assume too much too quickly, acting like they understand everything, and I think that the contrast between the two is what makes this particular scene work so well. and with the ‘stalking’ comment, since this seems to be a sensitive topic, im talking about what is implied in the context of this scene. xie lian knows that hua cheng followed him into the army 800 years ago and is following him again now. while ‘stalked’ is a strong word and not completely accurate to xie lian’s interpretation (although it’s what fx and mq try to convince him), when xie lian is looking at the mural, he thinks that he must have many memories of hua cheng that he had disregarded, implying that he has the impression that hua cheng has been watching/following him for a while, but the reason he’s not concerned by this like feng xin and mu qing are is because he sees the love and admiration that has been put into this artwork. xie lian isn’t concerned by the idea of hua cheng following him around because this is also the scene where he realizes hua cheng is in love with him.
one of my favorite scenes in tgcf is the cave of ten thousand gods because of what it reveals about xie lian. hua cheng is actually a walking red flag and its quite clear to everyone that he's obsessed with xie lian to an unhealthy degree. with the reveal about the earring and the statues, feng xin and mu qing are rightfully concerned, and fx asks xl, 'doesn't looking at these things scare you?' and when xl defends hc, mq says 'did he actually cast something on you to confound your mind? i think even if he was to write ‘suspicious’ on his face you’d suddenly become illiterate.'
now xl is the king of willful ignorance and self-delusion, but in this scene can't deny hc's devotion to him. however, xl is used to being abandoned. his entire country turned it's back on him, his parents killed themselves, his best friends abandoned him, and he was expelled from heaven, hated and mocked by everyone in the three realms. except for one person. xl still doesn't realize his whole history with hc and a lot of assumptions are made during this scene, but seeing proof of hc's devotion comforts him. hc is the only one who believes in xl, and xl is so messed up and traumatized by his past experiences that being stalked for 800 years is his idea of a dream relationship. i think that 'cute and wholesome' is a fundamental misinterpretation of hualian's relationship. yes, they have cute moments, but they're both so deeply fucked up that outsiders of their relationship are very concerned.
