i'm so sorry babbs all i saw is 'sci' and my brain filled in the rest before immediately blacking out. i am not sorry, however, for the person i am about to become

the third time you see skrael bonk his head against the doorframe of your flat—the first time you were sure you weren't mistaking things; he swears just like the schoolteachers do, dry and vicious, just under his breath—you laugh. you can't help it. his eyes go wide for all of a moment, a sharp, lovely blue against the red of his hair, before you see his shoulders set, and he ducks his head, and without turning round to you, he just says: "breathe not a word of this to them, and i'll take us by the dairy you like on the way home."

it isn't that she's keeping secrets. she is a secret, a big one, from how little bells and skrael have talked about it. they're a secret too. just one secret, just like her; but one just as dangerous, too.

green thing, salt thing, green-and-dreaming thing. the voice in her dreams is huge and mournful, a memory without memory. a jolt of pure animal terror shooting down her spine fit to pierce her heart. whither did they take you from us? what did they do to you?

the next time bellroc wakes up, small and cool and the perfect size to hug, right at her side, she asks, unprompted: "what's a lyctor, bells?"

the blood drains from their face so quickly, and they swear so sharply, so bitterly, even in that dry still voice, for a moment she thinks the two of them finally figured it out—that they've gotten their bodies back, that they've figured out what went wrong, that they've figured out who she is, at last. but when she glances over to them, and sees only the familiar jewel-brown eyes in the familiar boy-round face she's always known—well. her heart does fall, only a little.

unfortunately i am still a soft stupid sucker for gradschool au dweebs so. gorgoneion (gradschool!bellroc's basement doom metal band) gets a +1

it starts with skrael—well. tinkering. he's almost through an entire cryoengineering program, how hard can a homebrew fog machine be?

after nari kicks them out of her garage—"i am NOT losing my deposit over a little FREON CONTAM, ASSHOLES (LOVING)"—bellroc changes tack. he knows bells's heard him, humming tone-deaf little bars over breakfast; he does it unthinking, but he knows they know he can't carry a tune in a bucket. vocals are, thankfully, out of the question.

so when they ask if he'd like to write for them, instead—he doesn't really know what to say.

he's not offended. it's not—that isn't it. it's not because they write their lyrics in some fuckoff ancient language (they've explained) no one living is even really that sure of how to pronounce. it's that gorgoneion was their thing. just them. a piece of them he'd first glimpsed without their knowledge, an overstep he still somehow faintly regrets, even despite their forgiveness. and now for them to offer it to him, like this? freely, knowingly, after all the stupid bullshit of the past year-odd knowing each other?

the last time he felt so much like an idiot teenager in love, he was one. and that? is really the scariest part about this.

we're going with "general canids" here because

bellroc is obviously a maned wolf (chrysocuon brachyurus) bc they likewise are 90% leg, have a magnificent ruff, and just generally give off an air of "you expect them to be giving off shoujo manga sparkles."

skrael is an arctic fox (vulpes lagopus) because literal years ago i sent a rp partner a picture of an arctic fox stealing an egg like "that's your boy!" and now. that boy is now my boy. egg-stealing trickster bastard but so cozy comfy in the cold (plus summertime gothmode) and soooo cute.

nari, of course, is a tanuki (nyctereutes viverrinus) because nobody remembers tanuki are technically canids AND ALSO while that's true of all three of these species, racoon dogs are more closely related to foxes than maned woofs. also also, per wikipedia: "they are reputed to be mischievous and jolly, masters of disguise and shapeshifting but somewhat gullible and absent-minded." hello.

anyway the actual point of fandom is to inspire each other. reading each other's fics and admiring each other's art and saying wow i love this and i feel something and i want to invoke this in other people, i want to write a sentence that feels like a meteor shower, i want to paint a kiss with such tenderness it makes you ache, i want to create something that someone else somewhere will see it and think oh, i need to do that too, right now. i am embracing being a corny cunt on main to say inspiring each other is one of the things humanity is best at and one of the things fandom is built for and i think that's beautiful
