[Do you feel like you have to take care of Shrier?] Take care? No. [But you two are close.] I mean, well, yeah, I mean… we spent a lot of time together. Like, a lot. It’s… [It’s nice, that camaraderie.] Actually, I was gonna say annoying. Like weird or… I don’t know. You ever spent way too much time with someone? [How do you mean?] Let’s say we’re taking a road trip somewhere. How about Yosemite? We’re taking a road trip to Yosemite. That’s, what, like 3,000 miles? But we figure that’ll be half the fun, right? The drive out there. I mean, we’ll make a cool playlist, we’ll stop at weird local diners, talk to old cowboys. But the rest of the time, we’re essentially just driving in the car. What do we do in the car? We’re talking about what we’re gonna do when we get there, right? I mean, check out the scenery, the animals. But then for the rest of the time, we’re just driving. And it gets boring. Even if we’re the most interesting people in the world. The playlist is over, we’re not hungry anymore, we ran out of funny stories to tell. And for a second, it gets almost scary– like, we did this on purpose? And now we just got to keep on going?

she glances down at her watch. 4d sets it up so there’s a countdown timer to the end of their assurance policy - one hundred and twenty hours to get a package from its starting location (los angeles, for her) to its end. she’s ahead of schedule. so rhiannon takes a second, leaning against the hood of her car, and peers out at the road.
another car goes by - driverless and empty. some of the newer ones don’t even really have interiors. no windows. just sensors, practically a block on wheels. the gas stations are already mostly automated. she concerns herself for a moment with kicking the vending machine lightly, enough to dislodge the bag of chips she bought and sending it tumbling down against the glass.
she glances up. then back. shit. it’s Someone Else, a fucking novelty. “yes, i actually bought these,” she says, almost using her body to block the vending machine and the chips at the bottom. “i’m not just kicking things for no god damn reason.”

If we are a country made up more of distance than culture, then no wonder [The Grand Canyon] is our most defining sight. We come to see the beating heart at the center of America and it is a hole in the earth.
