6/1/23 - The Wonders of Zaha Hadid!
Today was our last day all together - and we certainly made sure to make the best of it! We began with a tour of the incredible Dongdaemun Design Plaza, designed by none other than the iconic Zaha Hadid, where we took lots of pictures and ate lunch as well. After that, we headed off for a quick tour of the incredible underground innovation at Ewha Women’s University, and then spent the rest of the day in Myeongdong! There, we spent most of our time shopping (I visited a cute cat cafe) and enjoying the street food, until it was time for dinner at an iconic pork katsu restaurant. After dinner was the incredible and hilarious Nanta non-verbal cooking performance, which was an unexpected huge hit with our group. onYON!

5/31/23 - Home Innovation
Today we explored the new technologies and designs being created for home life at the Raemian Gallery! At their showroom, we were given tours of three different “homes” completely designed and filled with their futuristic technology, from wine-drinking robots to closets with mirrors that showed outfits on you! The building itself was also gorgeous, so we had a full morning of enjoying incredible technology and architecture. Once our time had ended there, we headed back to the Gangnam area and explored Bongeun Temple, which was beautifully decorated with tons of brightly colored lanterns for Buddha’s birthday, seeing as it is a Buddhist temple. After lunch in Coex, we headed out to the Kunkuk University area, where we toured a new-generation shopping complex made entirely of shipping containers. People in my year made sure to take a lot of photos - our first project in the fall semester uses them! After that, we were set to explore and get dinner, and I made sure to check out the adorable Line Friends store. Lots of walking, but a gorgeous day!

5/30/23 - Back to Seoul!
Today we took the 2 hour bullet train ride from Busan to Seoul, and returned to our original hotel after much metro navigating. After touching base, it was back out into the streets! We grabbed lunch at the Hyundai Department Store food court near Coex Mall, and then took off touring a couple high-end automobile showrooms and, of course, K-Pop Street! We rounded off the day with a tour of Apgujeong Rodeo Street, where we found a funky American food art installation and a lot of instagrammers taking photos, and ended the day with dinner and more exploring at Coex.

5/29/23 - Inje University Workshop!
Today’s the day! We finally got to visit and tour Inje University, which was about an hour away from our hotel in Busan. After a tour of the design building at the university, we sat down with our groups and started brainstorming our conceptual design for the workshop. The problem presented to us was a real-world issue in which a nearby hospital, the Inje University Haeundae Paik Hospital, had issues with an outdoor rooftop space that was meant to be used by patients and caregivers as a place of rejuvenation and meeting, but generally went unused or even unknown. Our job was to create a possibly solution that would encourage people to enter and use the space in a beneficial way through signage, space planning, and more engaging elements. My group, group 3, consisted of two K-State students, myself and a fashion student, Brie, and three Inje Students - Changyu, another interior design major, and Hyeonwoo and Claude, who were both graduate visual/graphic design majors. An interesting thing about my group was that Claude was actually an international student from New York, so we had an advantage in communication. After some deliberation, sketching, and lots of Papago, we produced a final proposal following the concept of “Nature Reconnection”. Our conceptual design focused on drawing and guiding users through the space in such a way that will make them feel “reconnected” with the outside world and normalcy as a kind of escape or break from tiresome and unusual hospital life. View our presentation board below for visual details! After we presented our designs to the other groups, we all walked through the rain together to eat a final group dinner. Because this was the end of our collaboration with the Inje students, this was a little sad - and the gloomy weather certainly didn’t help. I made so many amazing memories with all of these new friends, and I’ll miss them so much as we continue the trip, and especially when it ends. Despite how sad the ending is, this was an experience that I am sure I will treasure forever.

5/28/23 - Busan!
Today was the start of our workshop! In the morning, we found our teams and started brainstorming ideas for the space will be redesigning and ate lunch together. We then took a bus to tour the Busan Cinema Center and the Shinsegae Department Store, which is the largest department store in the world - 9 whole floors! We finished up the day with a bus tour of the rest of Busan and then headed back to our hotels to get ready for dinner with our groups. My group decided to get street food with a few other groups, and it was great! The tteokbokki was too spicy for me, but the gimbap and shockingly the liver was delicious! We finished up the night with some shopping, a cafe, and lots of photo booth pictures!

5/27/23 - Jeju -> Busan!
Today was a lot of traveling! We started the day with breakfast (with the best bread I’ve had in a while) and then checked out of our hotel with two places to visit before we left for the airport. Our first stop was a beautiful church with a gorgeous reflecting pool, and then we headed to an amazing museum designed by Tadao Ando. My favorite exhibit in that museum was definitely the room of infinite dots, in which the you are encouraged to imagine yourself as a dot in the ever changing, infinite space. After taking some group photos, it was off to the airport for us! We munched on some food from Lotteria and I bought some bargain Innisfree skincare before our flight took off for Busan. When we landed, it was only more traveling for us - our airport limousine ride to our hotel was over an hour! But when we finally made it to our hotel, we were greeted with our coolest hotel yet, so it was definitely worth the wait. The night was topped off with fried chicken and celebratory karaoke with some of the Korean students to celebrate Savannah’s 22nd birthday!

5/26/23 - Jeju Day 2!
Today was certainly adventurous! We started with a quick boat ride to a smaller island off of Jeju called Udo. On Udo, we visited the incredible HundertWasser park, which was designed by the German artist and designer of the same name. His philosophy when creating this park centered on following nature and reflecting its musings, so it was all curved lines and uneven stairs and bright colors. The photos will certainly explain it better than I can! After exploring a rocky beach (shoes were sufficiently soaked), we took the boat back to Jeju and set off for lunch. I spent less time eating and more time climbing a tall rocky cliff on the sea (again shoes were soaked), but eventually we did have to leave to head to Tadao Ando’s Glass House. His passive design system led us down a maze like ramp that slowly got darker and cooler as we went down, eventually plopping us at a small art gallery. After a quick stop at the cafe in the house itself and some beautiful sightseeing, it was back to the hotel and then barbecue for dinner! We spent some time at the most beautiful cafe with some of the students before heading to bed early, since we have just been absolutely exhausting from all of our adventures! Tomorrow we visit a few more sites in Jeju before taking off for Busan, where there’ll be more to come…

5/25/23 - Jeju Day 1!
Today we start our 3 day adventure in Jeju! After we flew in in the morning, we met up with our partner students as Inje University and set out for our most fun day yet! Highlights include: Getting to experience a new design/aesthetic based indoor playground style area, exploring a gorgeous green tea farm, and hanging out with students at night! Top purchase of the day was a bucket hat modeled after the famous Jeju orange, which will make an appearance tomorrow 😉 As always, photo dump below!

05/24/23 - Seoul “N” Tower, Gyeong Bok Palace, and Cheong-ge Cheon!
Today was filled with gorgeous views and lots of walking! We started by heading to the Seoul Tower by taxi, where we took the cable car up the mountain and enjoyed some gorgeous views and, as always, great food! Next, we took the subway to the incredible Gyeong Bok Palace. We didn’t get to rent out hanboks, but the palace complex was incredible just the same. I accidentally wandered off and got lost, but I ended up getting to see more anyways, so it worked out in my favor. We finished off the day taking a stroll through governor’s street and Cheong-ge Cheon, followed by delicious samkyupsal and lots of shopping at the Coex Mall. Go to the end of the photo dump for a surprise kpop group spotting - an Enhypen fan sign!

Today I started packing some things since I’ll be busy the next couple of days! Trying to pack light to make traveling (and shopping) easier, but that’s a skill I’m still developing. I took pictures of some of the outfits I packed, so I’ll add a couple to the post :) More to come!
