Finished by adding some REALLY difficult melodic dictations to the end - these are all single line dictations, but for the start of the year for this class they would be doing well to progress to these

Been creating many more dictations to do - could also double as sight singing exercises (the easier ones). As you can see these dictations get increasingly more difficult as they progress

Melodic Dictation Creation
Last minute addition - wanted to actually write up some melodic dictations to add in, I’m thinking doing them in different difficulty levels. Perhaps about 10 per difficulty?
Tumblr media
This is the first 4 I have created, all of which are very simple and in either C or F major (with no B flat)

Eliza Aria Mixed Bag
I’ve been thinking about the mixed bag arrangement of Eliza Aria which I have created. It is extremely simple, and although the purpose is not to spend much time on it - they will be rearranging this resource into another style - I have worked into the lesson plan and UoW time for them to create their own harmony lines - perhaps changing the rhythms or notes?
The following is a list of all the parts I have created individually - this is replicated in each of the different keys required (plus F for horns, even though there aren’t any in my class)
Tumblr media
I think this activity will really engage the students, and will be a great way to teach them the basic melody of the piece through playing, rather than staring at a score. With the simple mixed bag arrangement score in front of them, hopefully students will be able to see patterns, and the ostinati which are happening.

Listening Guide cont.
Tumblr media
This is two of the concepts of music for this piece. I have highlighted the most important parts the students would be listening out for, and would get them to mark and find these in their individual scores

Listening Guide String Quartet No 16
A last minute change of piece has made me decide to create a listening guide for the String Quartet - first 2 movements. I’m outlining the basics of each concept in each movement in a table: these are the things I would want the students to listen out for.
Tumblr media
This is an example of the time signature changes in movement 2 which I have drawn up and will be inserting into the table

Eliza Aria Mixed Bag
As my focus piece is Wild Swans by Elena Kats-Chernin, I thought it would be fun to do a mixed bag arrangement of Eliza Aria. This piece proved very simple to do a basic arrangement of, and was quick to put into Sibelius. I did 4 parts, Melody, Harmony 1 and 2, and bass line. These are all simple, so I may add extra parts, or give extra instructions to allow students to make it harder for themselves.
I transposed the mixed bag from C into Bb, F and E - for future use this will be helpful.

Grid Analysis Resource
I have adapted a resource we received in a lecture for a Music 1 HSC style question, where I have intended this to be used to analyse Wild Swans.
This is the outline - I will adapt it further as I complete my more accurate UoW with better timings.

Outline of Activities
I have finished a very brief outline of my sequence of activities I plan to do, which will take place over 6 weeks of class time. The 6 weeks was spent on the Elena Kats-Chernin piece Wild Swans - using the overture introduction and Eliza Aria.
I may keep going with the lessons and start on another piece if I feel that this UoW is not long enough.

Start of Resource Creation for SSME
For our final SSME assignment (an HSC UoW on the mandatory topic) I have decided to use Elena Kats-Chernin’s work Wild Swans as the focus piece. Thinking of a starter activity, I have looked at the overture, and the repetitive nature of the marimba, piano and flute parts.
My first draft of this lesson will be to play these ostinati on some instrument, then ideally compose over the top of it (start by improvising?).
Tumblr media
This is the marimba line, flute line and clarinet line together (in the piece they enter staggered, and both piano hands are mimicking what other instruments are already playing.
Unless I need to add other parts to this, this resource looks and sounds accurate, and will lend to many activities taking place

Last night was our Presentation of Learning! It actually went really well and it was awesome to see all the incredible projects my friends made!
This video is the recording of my live performance which I’m super happy with, went much better than my practices did yesterday! I was super nervous and a bit shaky which you can probably see, but it was actually really fun and I’ll definitely be buying a Push at some point soon so I can learn to use the rest of the features I didn’t quite get to discovering.
I think learning how to use Ableton, mainly on my own, was a really good experience for me as both a musician and a teacher, as this program can be in some schools (was in my prac school) and I’ll be able to use it to record my student’s performances, but also allowed me as a musician to explore a part of music which I haven’t had much experience in creating before. Many of my friends create their own music electronically, one even uses a Push, so I will be reaching out to them and getting more involved in that side of it soon I hope!

Below is the link to Sydney Con’s instagram page, where the story highlights are from the presentation. You can see a brief part of my performance (where I pressed the wrong buttons and quickly started again!) and some photos from my performance.

Another Push Video
I had another quick play with the Push this morning after a weekend away from it, just to double check what I wanted to perform. I am pretty happy with the sounds I’m making - using the Cashon kit, Acid Bass and Noise Machine 5 sounds to create the drum, bass and melodic lines.
I have noticed I am much faster at changing between them, and think I finally worked out how the record button works! (Starts recording at the start of the bar not straight away thank goodness!!!)
I will be spending this week finishing the piece off, practicing performing in front of my family ready to present on Friday night at uni! This will be playing with a few more sounds to probably create another melodic line to add another section in if I can think of one!

Weekend
I went to a music festival over the weekend, so didn’t get time to practice using the Push for my final project. BUT I did get to see some amazing artists who used layering different sounds in their pieces to create an amazing work, for example we saw Golden Features play a song called Raka, and to get all these sounds he created them and built them up. Same for a band called Confidence Man in their instrumental sections.

Video of my piece
These are pretty much my final ideas for next Friday - I will be practicing getting the transitions between them all much smoother and exciting, and will hopefully add in another kind of melodic line on top!

My friend Tara’s composition is super awesome, I really like how the different layers interact with one another!

17/11/19
I went back and forth about the last four bars for about a week, because I just couldn’t decide if I wanted the ending to be just Trumpet and Guitar, or have the Sax playing a harmony to fill out the sound a bit more. Ultimately I decided that after having the rest of the composition quite filled out with lots of percussion parts, and several melodic layers, as well as the piano and guitar, that it might be too much of a drop of texture to end with, so I kept the Sax harmony in the final work. I also couldn’t decide on a title for my composition so I decided to do some googling of words to see if anything felt right. I started with looking at words that mean ‘several different voices at once’ or ‘hearing several voices in your head’, but only found a lot of articles with suggestions for what to do when you do hear different voices in your head…  I then looked at synonyms of the word ‘consciousness’, because I guess that’s what I feel like this composition is about, the different and contrasting streams of thought of being aware of different feelings. I found the word ‘sentience’ - “Sentience is the capacity to feel, perceive, or experience subjectively.” I did some research and found that philosophers in the 18th century used sentience to determine the difference between the ability to think and the ability to feel. I feel like this is the perfect word for the piece and the elements I’ve taken from my model song into both my baby steps and my own composition - Jhene Aiko recording Pretty Bird in one take and just singing and saying whatever she felt in the moment subjectively and expressing it through vocal melodies and rhythms.

TME Project
I’ve been listening to a lot of Dubstep and Psy-Trance and just electronically made music in general lately to find some great sounds and inspiration.
I used quite a few tutorials to teach me how to use Ableton before I began working on the push - unfortunately my file I had been using before the push somehow corrupted so half the sounds don’t actually sound, but will upload what is left of it after this post.
Here is a few of the tutorials I had a look at:
