The Darkin, Solari and Lunari connection.

Now, I’m going to start this little post by clarifying  that this is just a theory (A GAME THEORY) because while I do think that this would be a pretty solid connection between the Rise of the Darkin and the Solari genocide against the Lunari, I also have 0 confidence that it is something that Riot intentionally thought of and instead its just a happy coincidence that worldbuilding nerds like me can enjoy.

The Ascended

In ancient Shurima, almost 6000 years ago in the League of Legends timeline, the Aspects of Targon helped with the creation of the Sun disk. Through the Sun disk ritual, a human can ascend into something more, turning into a powerful magical being that is usually shown to be half human and half beast. The key point is that the Ascended were virtually immortal and had millennia to live, spreading the greatness of Shurima and the Sun disk through history.

TL DR: The Ascended and their glory are directly related to Sun magic.

The Darkin

However, some of these ascended were corrupted. During the Void War of 2500 BN (Before Noxus) these Ascended saw horrible things , the terror of the void, and those who survived were slowly driven to madness, the biggest catalyst being the fall of the Shuriman empire. These mad ascended then went from noble guardians to bloodthirsty warlords, fighting with each other for almost 2 millennia. 

It was only through, once again, the intervention of the Targonian aspects, that these Darkin were defeated, most killed and a few were magically trapped in their own weapons. How? Through the Chalicar (Sivir’s weapon) and through lunar magic. 

TL DR: The Darkin are corrupted Ascended related to lunar magic. 

Targon

Now as you might have noticed, Targon has interfered with Shuriman history quite a lot. In fact, I think it’d be fair to say that without its neighbor country, the empire would never have been as massive as it was.

Targon has 2 main religions, The Solari, followers of the Sun and the Lunari, followers of the moon. However, over the last few centuries,  the Lunari have been persecuted and murdered by the Solari…and yet we never really learn why. 

TL DR: The Solari have a burning hatred of the Lunari for some reason.

Conclusion.

Having all these pieces in place, I thought of a theory.

People didn’t know it was the traumatic events of the Void war that eventually corrupted the Darkin, so what if as history went on, the details are slowly lost to the Targonians. The sun and its magic are remembered as creating the Ascended, literally allowing humans to improve, while the moon and its magic is believe to have been the cause for the Darkin, instead of the chains used to imprison them.

And it is because of this misguided belief, that the Solari have committed genocide on the Lunari, because they see their aspect as pure and the moon aspect as corrupting.
