Entry #4: Dr. R

Even while away from the game I still could not stop thinking about it. Specifically the moment where it called me by my name. I thought about it so much that when I went to sleep i started dreaming about it. The dream was of sonic inside a ring, like he usually is in the title screens of sonic games, except something about him looked... Off... It didn't really look like sonic but more like a mascot suit of him. And instead of doing the finger wag he did a "come here" motion. Like he was beckoning me twords him. After I woke up from the dream I was hit with the smell of what was seemingly rust. That was until I looked down at my hands and soon realized that I was bleeding from my nose.

I walked to the bathroom and cleaned myself off. During the process of cleaning up the blood, I took a photo of it with my phone so I could show Kyle it later. After, I called in sick at work and continued with my playthrough.

I opened eggman's save file and was greeted with what was seemingly star light zone. The only difference being the background which had a blood red sky and mountains. The level was also completely empty, and felt like it went on for an eternity. I should also mention that the entire hud is now completely absent from the screen. The music in the level was a slightly eerie whistling tune that made me feel like I was being watched. Did I ever mention the emotional effects this game has on you? And I don't mean natural emotional responses, it makes you feel things that you wouldn't normally feel during the situation. After a while of walking, eggman finally went off screen and loaded into the next act.

The next act was some sort of labyrinth with checkered floors and the background of marble zone. And, just like the last act, it was completely empty. But this time the music was different. It was a truly foreboding track with a main melody that could strike a feeling of dread and hopelessness into you. It was almost like a "bad ending" theme that some games have when you make too many wrong choices on your playthrough.

As I went deeper into the labyrinth, the color palette started to shift into shades of green. The level seemingly also got darker as I went through it, only being illuminated by the torches mounted on the walls. After a short amount of wandering, I discovered a sonic shaped monstrosity with it's back turned to me. It didn't seem to notice me until I stepped closer. It suddenly turned in my general direction and started scanning the room, looking for me. That was when I realized that it could not see me if I was in the dark. I waited for it to pass by and sprinted past the torches light, praying that it wouldn't notice me. Later in the level I discovered more abominations, but the same trick worked on them too.

A few times a came across these paintings on the wall depicting three fireballs. I didn't know what this meant at the time but i would later figure it out on my own.

After finishing the stage I was brought to a screen with an insanely detailed version of that demonic sonic I kept seeing standing in a dark room. The sprite looked so real, almost like it could reach through the screen and touch me. Suddenly, text started appearing on screen. it read:

"You just do not get it yet, do you Thomas?

You feel right directly into my trap.

You, Kyle, and all of the others have gotten me just what I've wanted.

Your soul.

You see, Thomas, the human soul is very powerful.

And, if I gain exactly three human souls, I will have just the right amount of power to gain my physical form.

And there is nothing you can do to stop me."

I had finally realized what this game was. Its not a rom hack, it's not a fangame, but a vessel. A vessel for this.. thing.. to lure in more victims

He then started smiling

"I will kill your mother.

I will kill your father.

I will kill your little girlfriend."

I had fallen into his trap. Even when the game called me by my own damn name I still continued. And now, because of my stupid curiosity, everybody is going to die.

Tears started to form in my eyes and I screamed at the monitor:

"but why me!? Please don't kill me I'll do anything just don't hurt me! PLEASE!"

He replied:

"oh, but thomas

This is my world now

And in my world..

I..

AM..

GOD!"

Screams erupted from the speakers and fire appeared behind sonic on the screen. Then, I felt electric shocks tear up my arm. It was, and still is, the most pain I had felt in my entire life. Every memory I have ever made started flashing before my eyes. I was sure I was going to die by the hands of this thing. But then it suddenly stopped. I was out of breath like someone had just punched me in the gut, but I was alive. I then looked back up at the screen and saw what had saved my life.

It was.. eggman? Or at least it looked like him. But it didn't matter who it was. They still saved my life. I took a screenshot then pressed the A button then text appeared on the screen:

"his childish little games have gone on long enough

I give you my vessel, child."

Then more text appeared on the screen:

"foolish angel

I suppose I will have to teach you your place"

Immediately after the text faded away, I heard a voice come from the speakers:

"it is time for your execution"

The voice sounded a bit like kefka from final fantasy, except noticably deeper. I now have a fighting chance against this demon, thanks to eggman, and I will do anything to defeat it. The demon sent out a red sonic with no eyes to fight me first. It would run back and forth on the screen and would try to run me over. Luckily, he was fairly predictable and was easy to defeat with a few head stomps.

Next, he sent out a yellow sonic with no ears. He was the most difficult to defeat. He would jump into the air and do a "ground pound" type attack to try and crush me. Due to eggman's slow speed, it was hard to avoid.

Lastly, he sent out a blue sonic with no mouth. It would bounce around the screen and momentarily stop to taunt me a little, but this would also give me an opportunity to hit him. I had to get into a rhythm of running and jumping in order to avoid his attacks.

After the demon had finished sending his pawns to kill me, he appeared to fight me himself. He spoke again:

"I will crush you like the insect that you are."

But then, the angel interrupted him:

"no,

You aren't going to hurt anyone.

Leave child, I will finish him myself"

The game was now playing itself. Eggman was fighting, what I assume, is the demons true form. It was tall completely black skeletal figure with rotten yellow teeth and small red glowing dots for eyes. I didn't stop to watch the brawl and quickly left in my car with only my wallet. I just drove. Without any clue where I was going. I only wanted to escape that nightmare. Around half an hour later, I returned to my house only to find it engulfed in flame's. My home must have been caught in the crossfire, along with all of my belongings. I had officially lost everything. My life savings, my electronics, everything. simply burnt to ashes. There was nothing else to do but go back on the road and see where it takes me.

Entry #3: K.T.E

I loaded into the next zone which was, unexpectedly, scrap brain zone.

Knuckles played like he usually did. He could glide and climb walls but additionally, he could throw a punch by hitting the B button. I figured this out while trying to jump with that button.

I got through the first act rather swiftly with little to no trouble. Infact, knuckle's climb ability helped me get through it faster. But when I got to the second act, things started changing again.

The ground had rusted and there were puddles of blood on the floor. Although this time, there were no corpses to cause the blood puddles. When I got to the part of the level we're there was usually a pit, there was instead a large pool of blood. Seeing as there were no other options, I decided to dive under-blood and sink beneath the crimson waves.

The transition to the next act was similar to the transition from scrap brain act 2 to scrap brain act 3 in the original game, except this time there was no title card. It began with a free falling section down a narrow tunnel with spikes on the walls. Luckily, the blood slowed me down which gave me more time to dodge. it was at this point I had noticed that my score counter was completely gone. It doesn't really matter since I don't ever keep count of my score while playing games but I thought I'd mention it.

The closest thing I can compare this zone to is labyrinth zone. Which is notoriously hard due to the constant need for air. But this zone wasn't nearly as hard as labyrinth. It gave me plenty of air bubbles and the only obstacles were spikes and a few springs. And knuckle's gliding ability made it even easier to traverse this zone.

Eventually I got to the bottom of the zone where there was a large pit of spikes. I started gliding across the spike pit until I noticed something horrifying while landing on a platform.

Corpses. So many corpses. Each of them appearing to be sonics past lives. It's incredibly unnerving on it's own but what made it even worse is the corpses ability to spring back to life to try and drag me down. Eventually I reached a wall where there was one lone sonic body waiting by it. I jumped as high as I could and in one last ditch effort to kill me, the sonic desperately reached for me as I climbed up the wall. But I was too fast for it and was able to narrowly escape it's grasp.

I got to the top of the wall and jumped on a small platform above it. I walked across it for a bit until I found another pool of blood. I was about to jump in it until the same demonic sonic from earlier appeared behind me. Acting out of instinct, I turned around and tried to punch it. But when I did it just teleported behind me again. Over and over I kept trying to attack it but it just kept on teleporting. After a while knuckles collapsed on the floor from exhaustion and started sobbing. I pressed every possible button on the controller but knuckles wouldn't budge. A few seconds later, the demon sonic appeared again, but this time I was gonna try and take him by surprise. So I pressed the B button and went in for a punch. Sonic didn't even flinch as knuckle's first went into the back of his throat. Until suddenly he bit down on knuckle's arm and he screamed in agony as the screen faded to black.

Text appeared on screen again with that same flickering effect. This time I was able to get a screenshot of it. The text read:

"So many souls to play with

So little time

Would you agree"

But as I was about to take a screenshot, the text added onto it's sentence with the word:

"Thomas".

How in the fuck did this game know my name? Kyle couldn't have, put it in here, he doesn't know a thing about rom hacking. And even if he did there's no way someone like him would make THIS. The explanation of this being a rom hack is becoming less and less likely by the second. I decided to take a break for a day in order to keep myself calm. eggman can wait.

Entry #2: Tails

The speakers let out the classic "SEGA!" And the nostalgia hit me. Hearing that sound again brought back so many good memories, back when life was simpler and I didn't have to worry about the struggles of adult life. The title screen appeared and i started humming the cheerful upbeat music. But when the screen faded to black, there was a small color palette glitch. Everything that was previously white turned to black, i.e Sonic's eyes, the reflection in the water etc. I simply brushed it off as the hardware was quite old and was bound to have a few bugs here and there. I was greeted with another surprise when I loaded into green hill zone as... Tails? I came to the conclusion that this was a hack of some kind. I've seen tons of these across the internet so this rationalization came quick. Besides, I've always wanted to play as a different charecter in Sonic 1 so I thought this was kinda cool. I took a quick screenshot so I could show Kyle when I get his new number. I continued to do this throughout my playthrough.

I found another oddity when I reached the end post. Sonic was there tapping his foot like in his idle animation but his back was facing tails. And behind him was the mutilated corpse of a flicky. The poor things head was ripped clean off and there was puddle of blood beneath both it and Sonic. This must be one of those edgy horror hacks with all the gore and jumpscares. I approached Sonic but before I could touch him he quickly lunged at me with a loud screech. For a split second, I saw his face. It had the same black eyes that the sonic on the title screen had and he was smiling from ear to ear. When he made contact with me he disappeared and the entirety of green hill bursted into flames and Tails was thrown backwards, so I tapped the right arrow to force Tails to get back onto his feet. Not going to lie, the jumpscare got me good.

Whoever made this was clearly talented. The animated fire in the background was very smooth and lively. Tails even had unique shading for the level. I was genuinely impressed with it. Speaking of Tails, he had a concerned look on his face. He almost looked fearful. Honestly I can't blame him. If I was in that situation I would be pissing my pants too. The level was just one straight line with occasional bumps In the terrain. It went on for a while until I heard a laugh. And I don't mean the usual even laugh that villian characters have. It sounded every robotic, almost like an instrument. The closest thing I can compare it to is Kefka's laugh from final fantasy. The laugh was followed by the drowning theme. I've always hated the drowning theme. Once you heard that theme, you knew sonic was about to die. But this time I didn't get that feeling. I know your not gonna believe this, hell I wouldn't either if I hadn't experienced it first hand, but this time it felt like my life was in genuine danger. Like something was actually posing a threat to my life. After the drowning theme started playing the rings, score, lives and time counter all collectively changed to "RUN" in Bright red. I then followed the games advice and booked it. That's when I saw him. Sonic was running after me. But not with his usual cartoon-ish run. He was running like a normal person, with an arm outstretched to grab hold of Tails. I tried as hard as I could to run faster than him without my controller snapping in half, but he just kept getting closer and closer. Until he grabbed hold.

He snatched Tails up by his namesake and then tore them off with blood splattering on the ground. as he did this, I heard the sound of flesh tearing followed by tails screaming in pain. The scream gave me chills. It sounded so genuine. Like someone who was being tortured. The screen then cut to black and faded into a new image

The image was animated and looped every so often. There was nothing special about it, just sonic swaying from side to side while the fire moved in the background. Text appeared on screen with a sort of strobe effect. And, with my bad luck, I got one of the frames where the text wasn't there. The text read:

"You're too slow

Would you like to try again?"

They didn't give me any choices so I simply pressed start and the image faded away. I was then greeted with the title card:

"Charcoal Zone"

The level appeared to be the aftermath of the previous one. The ground was burnt and had no grass at all on it. And there was a large cloud of smoke in the air with rain coming out of it which, I assume, is what put out the fire.

Unlike the previous level, there was actual obstacles to avoid. There were platforms, bottomless pits and occasionally dead animals. The animals were completely scorched and incredibly aggressive. Their a.i was similar to that of the Newtrons from Sonic 1. Whenever they saw me they would start flying twords me. Luckily, they were incredibly easy to defeat. All I needed to do was jump onto them and they would die. Obviously, when they died they didnt explode into an animal but instead just fell to the ground like a real animal with their heads smashed in. Occasionally, a thunderbolt would shoot out of the clouds and light up the sky. They couldn't harm me or anything, I just thought it was a cool detail. As the level went on, the clouds and rain started to get more and more red-ish. And then he came back.

Sonic had teleported behind Tails and lifted him into the air by his throat. He did it so fast that I could hear Tails physically yelp in surprise. He tried desperately to escape until a lightning bolt came from the clouds and exploded the top of his head. The screen then cut to black as I heard the same laugh from earlier.

The black faded from the screen and I was greeted with a save select menu. There were only three save files, each of them having the faces of main Sonic characters inside them. Tails file had a rusty border, and his head icon was of his corpse. The background appeared to be fog that slowly slid across the background. The heck was cool and all, but I wanted to play an actual Sega game. I took the cartridge out and popped in ristar.

Surprisingly, this game was different as well. Not just different, but unplayable. As soon as I popped in the new cartridge this screen showed up. I couldn't go past it or even interact with the image at all. Only stare at this eyeless, bleeding Ristar. Is it possible to hack a console? I figured it must be if things like this could happen. I didn't bother trying VectorMan. If It can effect Ristar it sure as hell can effect VectorMan. So, I put the Sonic cartridge back in the console and continued my playthrough.
