"Why would you play it all on something as hollow as trust? What if you gave it all to find that it wasn't enough? What if, under the gaze of all, you come short when the going gets rough? Why would you be loving? [...] And, hey, why would you be loved?"
HOZIER ???? OH MY GOD ????

not to be that person but what do you mean butchered tongue is the least streamed song on unreal unearth. what do you mean people can listen to lines like "and as a young man blessed to pass so many road signs / and have my foreign ear made fresh again on each unlikely sound / but feel at home hearing a music that few still understand" and just. move on. sort that song into the skip file. what. what do you mean.
anyways butchered tongue is the best song, the most haunting song off unreal unearth.
y'all just don't fucking listen to lyrics anymore.

what absolutely floors me is the way "Unknown (Nth)" is the song for Treachery, and yet is more about betraying ourselves rather than being betrayed. hozier says that, when the break-up happened, it felt as though his lover was chewing on his heart while it still beats, but he can only blame himself because entering a relationship is acknowledging the chance it may fail and still going through with it. AND THEN HE SAYS "i'd walk so far just to take the injury of finally knowing you" - meaning he would do it all again with the knowledge of failure because isn't that what he risked in the first place anyway? ,,,"Unknown (Nth)", the weapon that you are-

this !!! here's the thing: i completely agree that music/art is subjective, and you are within your own right to derive whatever meaning you please from a song, but it feels very reductive to ignore when hozier sheds light on topics that others in the industry often turn their backs to.
i believe that, beyond moral obligation, most artists should want to talk about these issues and help - i feel it is human to simply care, yet it is a rarity. hozier is someone who not only speaks about these issues, but also incorporates it in his art. audiences often ignore news in favour for entertainment, and hozier combines the two yet is still ignored. despite he himself saying that he does not believe his work can exist separately to politics, he is still seen as nothing other than love songs and forests.
some of his music is fun and light and those songs can be seen as so! but his most recent album was based on dante's "inferno" - an inherently political work of literature. still, "eat your young" is seen as a 'sex song', "butchered tongue" is bordeline ignored, "damage gets done" is just a 'love song'. even beyond context, his lyricism still speaks for itself! hozier has an incredible talent at articulating politics and humanitarian issues, and it seems a waste to ignore that when it is so sparse in the industry.
it's just a little telling when people only recognise the depth of his work when the topic is palatable to them.
Just a reminder that listening to Hozier and not caring about politics is not something you can do. You can't listen to his music and not care about the world. You can't just ignore the political messages in his music. A big part of Hozier as an artist, and as a person, is bringing awareness to different issues and standing up for human rights. You can make jokes about him being otherworldly and a tree man because yes, a lot of his romance and morbid songs surround the physical earth it self but you cannot take away the years he's spent discussing human rights issues. He didn't spend 10 fucking years creating incredible albums riddled with songs like Take Me To Church, Nina Cried Power, Foreigner's God, Cherry Wine, and Eat Your Young just to have the political context, a.k.a the heart and soul of those songs, to he ignored. His "aesthetic" is not fairies and forests and skinny white girls in pretty dresses, his "aesthetic" is confronting the government and its corruption to shine light on issues that have been ignored for decades. You can't listen to Hozier and claim to love his music while not paying attention to the world around you.

i am forever thinking about the admiration hozier sings with in verse two of "abstract (psychopomp)". the way he compares the death of his relationship with the collision of hitting an animal, but is more in awe of his lover's reaction than the tragedy itself?? "the speed that you moved"?? "the screech of the cars"?? "the creature still moving that slowed in your arms"?? the way they could look death in the eye and care for it rather than run from it, and, instead of hating their acceptance of the breakup, hozier says that that is why there is "no choice but to love you"?? 'the way you are ending this is the reason i love you'?? the fact he is thankful that his lover has the strength to be the psychopomp because he knows he would have just kept flying into the sun icarian style?? how, despite how lost he feels ("the earth from a distance"), he cannot help but find the compassion his partner shows to the end of their love beautiful ("see how it shines")?? it is on my mind day in day out i can think of nothing else

it is so over for me the day hozier makes an achilles reference. all his mixing of greek mythology with the idea that love is an act of violence/defiance against the world and we have yet to hear him make a metaphor out of how batshit achilles went in the iliad ...i think i would spontaneously combust actually.
