I've just re-read YHBOTHL for the hundredth time and even now, several years later, I just cannot get enough. I've been a fan of PD since S1 but only really got into fandom around S6/7, but I distinctly remember this being the very first fanfic I'd ever read - during the pandemic, at a time when I think a lot of us used fanfic as some sort of escape from the reality of what was going on the world.

When I tell you that this fic healed my soul! It feels like a warm hug. Every single chapter is a masterpiece that I fall in love with more and more each time. The banter, the flirting, the smuttiness, the softness, the emotion, the little details describing the scene, the dialog, them. It doesn't stray from who they are as characters. The way your writing makes me feel everything they feel. It's all just perfect. 

'Home isn't Chicago, or the district, or deep-dish pizza or the wind. Home is Jay' 😭 - This line absolutely melts me every damn time. It just cleanses the soul. And the fact that myself and the majority of the Upstead fandom lose their minds and obsess over this one line in particular and immediately know the context and where it's from just proves how good a writer you are.

It's such a beautiful story! It has the absolute perfect ending, & I'll forever regard it as one of the best PD/Upstead fanfics out there.

I came into PD around that time (after 7 ended and during the extended hiatus) too, and writing that fic was exactly what I needed then - it was amazing leaping into the fandom right at that time.

Reading this really, really makes me miss those days (at least the fic aspect) and Upstead in general.

I'm doing a P.D rewatch and going through all the things and feelings, currently on season 6 (peak season for me), but was just wondering what your honest opinion on the whole Upzek 'relationship' is?

I'm salty that they got hotter scenes than Upstead (apart from 9x09 😏) and I agree it probably shouldn't have gone on for as long as it did, especially under the circumstances, but I really don't think it's as bad as some people insist it was 🤷‍♀️

Season 6 is the superior pre-canon Upstead season in my opinion, too!

I liked Upzek for what they were - hot coworkers who shouldn't have been dating but were using each other for a little bit of (hot) comfort and a bit of normalcy. They were hot together, the scenes were hot, and I liked that it allowed us to see more and learn more about Hailey. They (and everyone watching) knew they weren't endgame and I really don't think they ever tried to make it more than it was.

And some of my very favorite Upstead scenes are directly caused by Upzek being a thing (the scene in the bar, "we're good and we're always gonna be good" etc.) so I can't find fault in that either.

They dated like five or so episodes too long, especially because we didn't see anything about them for several episodes and then they were suddenly breaking up - it could have been sooner and had just as much/little emotional impact, depending on how you felt about it.

Mostly I'm all for two hot people hooking up, and it was okay because they knew and we knew they were both meant for someone else and this wasn't going to stop that from eventually happening.

So like... did I love them for each other? No, but they were hot and sometimes you just a hot friend to find some comfort in.

Do you plan to write more Upstead fics?

Hi anon!

I'll be honest and say that really, I don't know. Part of me misses Upstead so much, but another (maybe bigger) part of me can barely think about them without getting sad/angry/annoyed. I don't know if I want to go there currently, and I don't think I would currently be able to write them my favorite way (happy and flirty and smutty) because of how ugh I currently feel about them.

I do want to eventually finish the Upstead fics I've started (or at least the WIPs I've posted - there are like 20 I've started but have never shared) because for the most part those are fun AU-ish things, but I don't know when that'll happen.

I wish I could wholeheartedly say yes, and I envy those writers who can, and have continued writing them this whole time.

I think if I did a little rewatch of some of my favorite Upstead episodes/scenes that would help, but right now even those scenes I loved and obsessed over make me sad.

So... I hope. But I don't know.
