Shouta Kazehaya

Reasons:

Did someone ask for a male lead with dark hair, dark eyes, relatively flawless personality, everyone wants him, and he's only got eyes for the female lead? Well have I got a winner for you!

Propaganda:

Though he may be a touch on the generic side, his romance with Sawako is genuinely delightful to read/watch. People like these two so much that their anime is coming back a whole 13 years after it ended. That's dedication, ya gotta respect it.

Makoto Naegi

Reasons:

Plain appearance, only “normal” character, “talentless” (in DR, all characters are scored by talents, Makoto was scouted because he won a scholarship lottery), basic stock protagonist personality, somehow ends up as a beacon of hope and works to destroy despair (so stock anime protagonist arc)

Propaganda:

In a cast full of crazy and unique characters this guy just kinda exists. Yes, he’s the protagonist but the other protagonists had more depth to them. He just kinda is there. Would’ve been murdered first if he wasn’t the main protagonist

Reasons:

snarky high schooler with short brown hair and brown eyes. taken from the Haruhi wiki: “Kyon is the only member of the SOS Brigade who is "normal", having no special abilities at all.”

He’s a normal guy who’s in a club with god, an alien, an esper, and a time traveler. And he’s supposed to keep the peace. Also all the girls look completely different while he’s looking exactly like the only other guy in the club.

Cid Kagenou

Reasons:

Black hair, black eyes, sword slinging edgelord in fantasy land. Isekai swordboy, even.

Propaganda:

He fought valianlty in the last poll and I must submit him again. He is DEDICATED to the art of the generic anime boy. He PRIDES himself on his ability to pass as Classmate C. He treats being average as a sport and as an art form. And he does it all for one thing - the sake of the plot twist. Because SURELY none would expect CLASSMATE C to be the Shadow, the overpowered leader of Shadow Garden! The shadow that hunts shadows! The guy who thinks that the only way to defeat an atomic bomb is to BE the atomic bomb !!!! He is fucking insane but he derives equal joy from being the hidden badass puppetmaster as he does from being john doe. i'm obsessed. to everybody else the series is a near grimdark thriller of shadow organizations vs demon cults, and to him it's a really cool larping session he is both weirded out and very happy his friends are all also into. He genuienely thinks everybody else is also roleplaying. I love him.

- black hair - brown eyes - literally 16 - usual attire for the time and place he's from (late 19th century Japan) - glasses (which the other characters mistake for him regularly because of how boring he is) - THE audience surrogate - so generic that in a q&a in one of the anime episodes (https://youtu.be/7GkFQ7nCwPU?t=49), the answer to the "how do i draw Shinpachi" question was "draw [an ordinary guy]. make it lack as much personality as possible. then, give it glasses. <...> all the characters are based on Shinpachi."

Reasons:

basic design (if you remove the things on his outfit lmfao) hes pretty much a struggling idol in canon and hes painfully unpopular in universe too. he has a very straightwforward personality and comparing him to the other characters hes like. generic both appearance and personality. naoto shiraishi doesnt have a unique look either but comparing him to hanse naoto has a much more unique personality and is less of a boyfailure than hanse. i spedran this so forgive me

Hibino Shintarou

He has black (dark blue) hair and black (dark blue) eyes :3 Also he’s a Japanese prince in the world he’s in so

Propaganda:

He was once a joyous character full of whimsy who had a good relationship with his brother when he was forced to go study abroad because it would be ‘good for him’. So of course he already didn’t have a greaaaat relationship with his father since he was young. So off he went to Italy, where he was excluded and bullied because he didn’t know the language, plus he was a minority there so yknow. Then some guy named Mr Honda Konichi just conviniently waltzes into his life and becomes his tutor and companion, and they quickly made fast friends (son/father esque friendship). Mr Honda was the only real friend Shintarou ever had in Italy. They talked with each other, played with each other. Mr Honda cared for Shintarou and formed a bond Shintarou would treasure like nothing ever before. Shintarou was happy, so happy. He thought he’d be friends with this kind older man forever. But he thought wrong. Some days before, Shintarou had invited Mr Honda to go to the beach with his family. The young prince was elated and went off, but overheard Mr Honda saying he was going to rob their house because of their wealth. So Mr Honda knocked him out and buried him alive. In a dark, cramped box. Several feet under. With nothing but a hole and a pipe for air. And there he remained, for god knows how many days, until the Italian prince and his aide just so happened to pass by and rescued him. When he got out, he was so scared he couldn’t even go near anyone without going berserk. Then, he remembered he had to go to the beach with Mr Honda on Saturday, and ran, ran to see if Mr Honda was still there. He saw an ambulance, he saw police and EMTs. He saw a stretcher with a bloody hand hanging languid from it. He saw Mr Honda’s bloody, lifeless face, having been just shot to death after he tried to resist arrest. And that’s when he snapped. (but don’t worry mr honda is actually a kinda morally grey guy in the end we find that out later but it’s not relevant rn :() And now he’s scared to touch people or go into dark cramped places on his own and only trusts his robots because he thinks humans are incarnations of evil and there is no such thing as friendship, only mutual relationships where both parties benefit and nothing else. Ah yes, the good old (and still good) classic tragic past full of unresolved trauma which led to who you are today. The incident also hecked up his relationship with Junta, his brother (remember i told you he actually had a good relationship with him before) and they grew distant and hate each other now but not really. Dai Dai Dai Kirai. Ja Nai Ja Nai Ja Nai… He’s also a dick but cares when he is able to He likes omurice and nigiri sushi. Also he’s very smart and super duper good at playing chess and he secretly likes cats

Ayin

Reasons:

Generic face, generic black hair. He did commit a lot of crimes but he has the most bland appearance of all time

he is the generic anime boy in the grip meme and he has black hair and yellow eyes but he's so apathetic and normal it causes him to turn away from all the people he committed atrocities against

Designed as a mock of the "everyman" - scruffy black hair, black suit, white labcoat. Only thing that stands out are his yellow eyes.

Propaganda:

In a world where: 1. A human can biologically become a 10ft tall robot; 2. Most of his employees have horns or fire or extra eyeballs growing out of their heads; 3. When he resurrected his dead girlfriend, he gave her new body a sexier voice + figure, glowing eyes, and white-blue anime hair; ... our Ayin has made the choice to remain a black-haired everyman. The only time this remotely changes is in a vision where he is depressed (grey hair) or becomes God (white hair). His yellow eyes are strikingly beautiful, but do not absolve him of his standardness.

You know that meme with the person going 😬 and gripping someone’s shoulders? The person whose shoulders are being gripped is Ayin. Most people don’t know it’s him- I didn’t for a while- because he just looks that generic.

Reasons:

if you google a picture of him. you'll understand. he's also just. Like That. he's also kinda hilariously average as a character especially when compared to the other characters in DRRR!! (such as a superhuman strength bartender who has anger issues, a headless fairy who rides a horse disguised as a motorcycle, a teenage girl who is also kind of a sword, etc.) because like. when compared to Everyone Else, he's literally just a guy. it's really funny

Blue Lock has so many visually cool characters, like Chigiri or Kunigami or Bachira or Reo or Nagi who all look so unique and cool, and then you have Isagi, the MAIN CHARACTER, who just looks like A Guy 💀💀 like he looks so basic with the haircut and everything it’s so funny 😭

Reasons:

He is literally THE definition of generic anime boy: jet black hair with bangs that fall in his face and brown eyes. Had he not been a main character, he probably would have faded into the background.

THE most codified generic anime boy. The guy you think of when you think "Generic Isekai Protagonist". That's HIM. He may not be your fav but he's still the first to come to mind

Reasons:

Everything about him screams generic. Generic hair generic face generic eyes (dare I say: generic name). Multiple times in the story he tried to pass himself off as one of his (much handsome-r) companions and everyone is like. Hmmmm I'm not too sure about that. I've heard he's a lot more handsome and you're kind of mid. There's practically a running gag wherein his closest companions say something like "wow kdj has anyone ever told you that you're ugly"

Chapter one he tells us that he’s an ordinary salary worker with no friends whose most interesting hobby is reading webnovels on the subway. This hobby proves to be useful thanks to the entire plot of the story but there is a running gag that people think he looks mid or can’t remember what he looks like at all

Propaganda:

"Hi my name is Kim Dokja :) no there isn't anything weird or off-putting about me :) I am a perfectly normal man :)" <- real quote from Kim Dokja seconds before doing something weird and off-putting Jokes aside he is. Very very generic. It's an actual element in the plot that he's generic. He also keeps trying to convince everyone else he's just some normal dude but he's NOT and they DO NOT BELIEVE HIM He also keeps trying to pass himself off as his much more handsome companion and it only works because they've never seen him before (there's at least three paragraphs every time this happens of "hm no I heard YJH is really handsome. This guy is kind of ugly ngl")
