Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials was well received and won a couple of awards (and a second edition, I think in â87?). It took a little while for the sequel to emerge: Barloweâs Guide to Fantasy hit shelves in 1996.
Even though I am not super widely read in either fantasy or science fiction, Barloweâs fantasy book is the one I really vibe on. Maybe because it allows him to do stuff like Grendel from Beowulf and Gorice from The Worm Ouroboros. Wouldnât have expected Gideon Winter, the antagonist from Peter Straubâs odd novel Floating Dragon to be included, but he was. Other surprises are the Psammead from Five Children and It and the Saw Horse from Oz.
One of the coolest things about these books is the fold-out size comparison charts. I love a good size-comparison (and again, this is a big feature of those Petersenâs Guides for Call of Cthulhu, and I am sure it came directly from here).

The flip side of the post-World War II cries of âNever againâ was an unspoken âNever before.â The insistence on lifting the Holocaust out of history, the failure to recognize these patterns, and the refusal to see where the Nazis fit inside the arc of colonial genocides have all come at a high cost. The countries that defeated Hitler did not have to confront the uncomfortable fact that Hitler had taken pointers and inspiration on race-making and on human containment from them, leaving their innocence not only undisturbed but also significantly strengthened by what was indeed a righteous victory.

There is nothing mysterious or natural about authority. It is formed, irradiated, disseminated; it is instrumental, it is persuasive; it has status, it establishes canons of taste and value; it is virtually indistinguishable from certain ideas it signifies as true, and from traditions, perceptions, and judgments it forms, transmits, reproduces. Above all, authority can, indeed must, be analyzed.

i keep trying to save money then having to pay like $250 a month in dental bills alone and it's really really fucking demoralizing lol like i haven't dropped into the red in some time but i keep getting heckled to pay bills when im a couple days late on them and holding out until my next check and i get that this is not an uncommon experience but i am sooo not built for this kind of financial stress. you can beat me for hours straight but i hate dealing with money
