King Covers
Whether you know it or not... and whether or not you'd like to admit it... Elvis has played a significant role in all of our lives. Beyond inventing jumpsuits and sideburns, he popularized rock n roll and churned out an impressive amount of great music.
Here, however, we shine some light on  lesser known inspirations from the King. Bands that put their own stank on songs that Elvis wrote or canonized... and a couple under-the-radar songs that he covered himself.
Fix yourself a peanut butter and banana sandwish and do the download.
Billy Swan "Don't Be Cruel"
Dee Dee Warwick "Suspicious Minds"
Jackie DeShannon "Trouble"
Dean Carter "Jailhouse Rock"
A Classic Education "Crawfish"
Killdozer "Burnin' Love"
Lick The Tins "Can't Help Falling In Love"
Wanda Jackson "Hard Headed Woman"
Elvis Presley "Aloha Oe"
Elvis Presley "One Night"

All of these songs are pops-approved…
Natural Child “Out In The Country”
Paul & The Tall Trees “Crack of Dawn”
Murder by Death “Hard World”
Cold Specks “Bodies At Bay”
Hiss Golden Messenger “Lucia”
Generationals “Ten-Twenty-Ten”
Benjamin Booker “Violent Shiver”
Peter Matthew Bauer “You Are The Chapel”
Courtney Barnett “History Eraser”
The Men “Different Days”
St Vincent “Regret”
Bones of JR Jones “The Plan”
Kevin Morby “Reign”
Bahamas “Stronger Than That”
And if yours is anything like mine - a free spirited fellow full of love and seemingly stuck at 45 even though he’s decades older - well then he may enjoy them as well. And so might you.
I’m not sure what it says about my maturing tastes, or “ours” collectively, but a surge of mature/dad rock bands that have been around for years are finally starting to get the attention and adoration they deserve: War On Drugs, Future Islands, and Phosphorescent for instance. Seems like it stems from an urge to return to simpler times. So uncork that vintage bottle of brandy, download these ol’ timey mp3’s to your first generation ipod, and enjoy.
Best,
GEMS

summer has struck. that means it's time to crank up your air conditioning, sign up for netflix, and never leave home… or whatever it is you like to do when it the temperature turns to sweaty. regardless of your ideal summer day, this mix should accompany you along the way.
summer often conjures up feelings of joy and reckless abandon, but it also accompanies a simultaneously sentimental and fleeting emotion - as if there's always one eye on the past and the other on the falling sands of the hourglass. the most iconic summer songs - from 50's doo-wop to the 70's soul of the isleys and bill withers to the early 90's dogg pound and ice cube west coast hip hop - have managed to bottle both of these feelings together. as the hunt & gather ethos goes, the selections are new and under the radar or old and overlooked.* do da download and enjoy.  *for example, we omitted kanye's "bound 2" because everyone should know and love that song by now; same goes for the unrated video for robin thicke's "blurred lines."

It wasn't until the mid-70's that the punk movement got some (likely unwanted) credibility, but ten years before The Ramones, Clash, and Sex Pistols, and five years before MC5 and The Stooges, these wild rockers were paving the way.
Del-Vetts "Last Time Around"
Jesters of Newport "Stormy"
Dean Carter "Jailhouse Rock"
Alex Harvey "Shakin' All Over"
Los Saicos "Demolicion"
Love "Seven and Seven Is"
Keggs "To Find Out"
Bunker Hill "The Girl Can't Dance"
All the elements were already in place - simple and maniacal guitar thrashing, vocals drenched in whiskey and strychnine, and a heavy dose of fuck off. A couple of my favorites here are "Demolicion," which somehow comes from Peru and seems like it has a good sense of humor, and Bunker Hill's possessed R&B punk number "The Girl Can't Dance."
download the whole gang here.

future sex love sounds…
… not of the justin timberlake variety.
more like the sultry space-age stuff that's been popping up in the past few years, dripping with eerie distortion and heavy beckoning sensual sighs.
after future androids gain a mastery of human emotion and perfect the art of music, these are the songs they will listen to while they make android babies.
download the whole lot of them here.

sincere covers of questionably cheesy source material from the 80's are really doing it for me nowadays.

sam amidon "walking on sunshine"
young heel "love you down"
bahamas "whole wide world"
gayngs "cry"
m crawley "heart of glass"

UPDATE: A late addition thanks to the always reliable aquarium drunkard...
Jonathan Wilson's cover of Madonna's "La Isla Bonita..."
utterly unexpected but equally welcome.

Have you ever found yourself solo slow-dancing in a strange place long after midnight? Well, then, you know it's not nearly as bad as it sounds. This group of tunes is made for those moments… driving aimlessly along your childhood streets, helping a friend manually brush their teeth, being the first or last person at the bar. The music mixes romance and loneliness, mystery and comfort, the familiar with the bizarre. Find your late-night strange place and enjoy.
Do the download.
Track-list...

Ahmad Jamal "What's New"

serial killer flicks usually use at least one great pop song. for example...
enya "sail away" - from the recent 'girl with the dragon tattoo'
q lazzarus "goodbye horses" - the godmother of all serial killer theme songs from 'silence of the lambs' infamous tuck job scene
gerard mcmann (cool name dude) "lost boys theme" - vampires are serial killers too
donovan "hurdy gurdy man" - another contribution from fincher, from his slow-burner 'zodiac'
download 'em here
