Sonny and the Sunsets — Self Awareness Through Macrame (Rocks in Your Head)
Tumblr media
Self Awareness Through Macrame by SONNY & THE SUNSETS
Sonny Smith spent the COVID pandemic about the way you’d expect him to, writing loosely arranged but carefully articulated story songs that capture the moment. The man who once wrote and recorded 100 singles for imaginary bands, complete with art and backstory, had no trouble figuring out what to do with his free-floating time and anxiety. He laid down ten songs, matter of fact on their surface but magically surreal underneath, with a friends—Josiah Flores, Ava Lynch, Tahlia Harbour and Rusty Miller—in a few sensibly masked sessions.
Smith has never gotten the ink that Bay Area contemporaries like Kelley Stoltz or Ty Segall or Sic Alps or The Ohsees have garnered, but he’s master of barbed but breezy guitar pop.“Signs” busts out with Kinks-y exuberance, hammering the piano and harmonizing the chorus, as Smith reads the omens.“Waiting” wheedles with vintage organ sounds, jangles with giddy guitar. It starts out chronicling the lockdown in a matter of fact way.Smith’s son is in his room sewing costumes to keep the boredom at bay.But like most Smith songs, it spins out in magic realism, imagining a UFO landing and taking the boy away. He’s a master of twisting realism into gentle fantasy, so that it’s hard to say where the grit leaves off and the fairy dust starts.
The most intriguing song, lyrically, is “How to Make a Ceramic Dog,” where Smith imagines constructing canines in exacting detail. The process is involved—making ears, making snouts, making tails—and it serves as a kind of bulwark against an awful world.“Try not to think about politics.Try not to think about fascists.Just think about dogs,” mutters Smith, in his cracked, half-melodic way, like the boy in “Waiting” using art to stave off anger, despair, tedium.
These songs are well-made, bouncy and infectious, with sunny hooks and buoyant choruses, like 1960s pop but hand-made, with some of the stitches showing. “Memory Lane” is especially catchy, with its bounding bass and rumbling drumbeat; if TVP sounded like the Beatles but cracked, then this one sounds like TVP through a broken mirror, surreal but jaunty, carefree but accomplished.
And anyway, how did you spend the lockdown? Watching the Sopranos again?Banging pots at 7 o’clock for the doctors, and celebrating another day of not dying?Zooming for happy hour with a slight air of hysteria?Sonny Smith made a Sunsets record that both memorializes those months and transcends them.

Expensive Music Band (Cringila, Australia) have a sound that really doesn't sound very Australian. This is not slow-meandering pop, nor is it abrasive punk. This kind has the feel of a cross between Sonny & The Sunsets, Mac DeMarco and Magic Trick.
According to Austin Town Hall, "Things to Say at a Barbeque" will be co-released by Exclusive Culture and Permanent Slump. I can't find any evidence of this, but I'm sure ATH is right. By the way, Permanent Slump (UK) is a GREAT label and we used to post about their releases frequently.

I Dreamed I Saw Dwight Eisenhower (or, How Come There’s Never an Old Weird American Around When You Need One?)
Come out, ye gifted kings and queens And hear my sad complaint No martyr is among ye now Whom you can call your own – R. Zimmerman
Wub-Fur once again finds it needful to apologize for an overlong absence from the Internet airwaves and offer in recompense (as is our wont) another eclectic mix of contemporary indie rock and such. We recently awoke, as one does, from a recurring prophetic fever dream of a nation teetering on the edge of the fascist abyss and rushed to our virtual turntable to assuage our bewilderment and dismay by finding some excellent new tunes to share with you all. Featuring magical, melodious, and magnificent musical outpourings from Allah-Las, the Softies, Rain Parade, Beach Fossils, Woods, the No Ones, Pink Mountaintops, and 11 more of our favorite artists of 2023.
Nb. We didn’t really like Ike all that much, but he was a freakin’ saint compared to the authoritarian conman the Grand Old Party threatens to return to the White House next year. If you are an American citizen, please act (and vote!) accordingly.

Fic Stats Meme
Rules: Give us the links to your fics with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and your fic with the least amount of words.
Both @elwenyere and @goddammitjim had open tags and this sounded fun! Let's see what the stats say:
Most hits
Slow Waters - Star Wars, 37k, Codywan, 7123 hits
The events of seven days in the mid-autumn of 2025, between the arrival of the Fett brothers -- the three-man Ranger team nicknamed "The Clones" by the general public -- to the Tokyo Shatterdome, and the last mission made against the Kaiju invasion.
Second most kudos
Inexpressibly to Untangle - Star Wars, 6k, Codywan, 533 kudos
"He’d always wondered why they’d called it that, when they can see real stars all the time, and the rearrangement of blood pressure just greys out his vision. It’s nothing like crisp white sparks of light on a vast black field, or a little speck of red on a purple sunset, or three yellow suns burning in tandem on the horizon." A post-Order 66 canon AU in which Obi-Wan and Cody crash-land on Endor.
Third most comments
Portrait of Monsieur X - Captive Prince, 37k, Damen/Laurent, 47 comment threads
"Without moving, Laurent spoke. “I wonder how long it takes for a portrait to become something different than its subject,” he said quietly. Damen wondered if this was a question he was truly meant to answer." It's the 1890s and Damen is hired to paint Laurent's portrait. A fic with guilt, ruin, and love.
Fourth most bookmarks
Wolfssegen - Star Wars, 7k, Codywan, 42 bookmarks
"Three years ago, just after Cody took on the old house on the outskirts of a small town, there had been a full moon, and Cody had woken the next morning to find the mangled remains of an iron wolf trap strewn across his back steps. The next full moon, he'd dragged a chair outside and waited up all night, and watched the patient glow of Obi-Wan's eyes from just beyond the tree-line." A vaguely historical, vaguely German story about wolves and magic.
Fifth most words
What Year Was Our House Built? - Star Wars, Codywan, 23,713 words
Cody and Obi-Wan live a peaceful, domestic life in a beautiful house, but all is not what it seems. Fictober 2023
Prompt number: #13, “Come with me, hurry.” Fandom (AU if applicable): Law & Order: SVU Pairing: Nick Amaro x Reader, Motorcycle!AU Rating: T Warnings/Tags: Warnings: none; Tags: AU
----
The motorcycle roared into the parking lot and you’d barely felt it stop under you before Nick was cutting off the engine and yanking his helmet off. He helped you off the bike and unclipped your helmet before it felt like both of your feet were even on the ground again.
“I knew we should have left earlier,” he grumbled as he gently tugged the helmet off of you and strung it up on one of his bike handles. “I don’t actually drive as fast as you make it seem.”
“I’m sorry, but there is no way that I could have moved any faster,” you apologized with half a shrug and swallowed a yawn. “You know I’m not a morning person.”
“Okay. Well, we may still make it.” Nick grabbed your hand and laced your fingers in his before he tugged at it. “Come with me. Hurry!”
He started jogging and you forced yourself to keep up while trying not to trip over your own feet. You’d been to this park a few times as a kid and you had no idea why Nick insisted on taking you on a random Sunday to watch the sunrise. He’d come home with the idea on Friday and as much as you pleaded with him to have two days where you could sleep in, he insisted that you couldn't miss it.
“Babe, do we really have to run?” you squeezed out. You were fully awake now, though, and Nick’s excitement was starting to brush off on you. Even as you yawned again you did so around a smile. “I’m not up for a morning jog.”
“Oh my gosh, you’re impossible in the morning,” Nick laughed even as he picked up his pace. His boots left deep patterned grooves in the dirt that had a few brave blades of grass pushing through it. “This is worth it, I promise.”
You opened your mouth to say something else and he cut you off.
“And, I will buy you the biggest coffee you want on the way home,” he added.
You closed your mouth with a satisfied grin and picked up your pace as you dropped his hand.
“In that case, let’s go! What are you waiting for?” you called over your shoulder as you passed him. There was a vague idea of where he was headed that you were happy to chase down until he caught up.
“Was ‘coffee’ really the magic word?” Nick managed to sound playfully incredulous, and not at all out of breath, as he caught up to you easily.
A wide grin spread across his face and it made your breath catch. First thing in the morning, to see him looking soft and playful was a wonder in and of itself. This was not a side of Nick that you saw often. In fact, you could probably count on one hand the number of times you’d seen him look like this in the last year. But then again, it had been a very long year. Your heart ached for Sonny, and his old lady, and for Nick, and Veronica, and yourself. It had been a long year.
“Maybe,” you tossed back just a beat too late. You kept the smile plastered on your face and turned away slightly under the guise of watching where you were going as you kept pace next to him. “You’ll have to try it a few times to be sure.”
“And just what do I get out of this exchange?” Nick asked with a side long grin. He slowed and you slowed in turn, bumping into him intentionally. He laced your fingers together again and your chest loosened.
“A caffeinated girlfriend,” you replied dryly. “Now what is so special about this sunset?” You turned to him and looked up into his face in question.
“You’ll see,” Nick said with a private smile. Then, he gathered you in his arms and turned you to face where the sun was painting streaks of soft yellow in the sky.

Sonny! I found this video and immediately thought Ari. Now is it Flamingo King Ari? Lumberjack Ari? Or Battle of the DILFs Ari? Coz across the Sonny Multiverse, J just know Ari loves a bit of outdoor fun. I AM SO EXCITED FOR FLAMINGO KING 2!!! Love you!
oh my, let's go with the flamingo king himself, mr. rock 'n roll:
it started off as just a cute little picnic in the field, watching the sunset in each other's arms and being all lovey-dovey, then he started kissing along your jaw, his beard tickling your skin as he dipped lower to your neck. His thick fingers hook under the strap of your sundress, and slowly slip it down your shoulder.
"Ari," You warn, trying to conceal your modesty. "Y-You promised."
"I promised we'd watch the sunset." He answers swiftly, hiking up your dress to rub over your panties, he groans lowly, "God, I could practically smell you, sugar. You gonna let daddy have a taste? Been too damn long since you rode my face."
You jump as he swats your core, "Ari! We justthis morning," but he was insatiable, "We're supposed to be having a date!" You giggle, squirming away from his wandering hands.
"What's more romantic than having sex and watching the sunset?" Ari asks with a smirk, easily dragging you back into his lap. He lies back as you straddle him, he massages your thighs and slowly works them open. "Just watch the sun go down, baby, can you do that for me?"
You bite your lip, hearing the zipper of his jeans before they're yanked down. Then, the bulbous tip of his cock prods at your clothed entrance, you moan quietly and pull your panties to the side, "But you're gonna miss the sunset."
"It's okay, ain't nothin' prettier than this." Ari grunts, forcing his eyes opened as he slides into you, your poor hole stretching around his girth, almost struggling to take him. He spreads your cheeks, drooling at the sight of your puckered hole, "fuck—you ever think about wearin' a plug for me? So I can fuck your ass whenever I want?"

"You are Amethyne..."
I decided to start writing little stories about Ridgeside Village too, because why not? This one is about conversation between Madame Maive and my OC Farmer Julian. ⚠️ Warning: domestic violence and angst
_________________________________________
"I must say, I'm very pleased with how you're doing with the farm. You have even exceeded all my expectations, and you never cease to amaze me so far."
Maive and Julian stood on the cliff near the cable car station, watching the horizon as the sun set behind the distant mountains, painting the clouds and the whole land with gold, orange, and bright red colors. In early fall, such a sunset creates a truly stunning and mesmerizing view, a dream for any photographer.
Sonny stood not far from them, also keeping his eyes on the magnificent view, on the beauty that Yoba had bestowed. He dared not interfere with the conversation between the Madame and the young farmer, for he felt it was something very personal. But still he looks at Maive for a moment, like a faithful dog, waiting for her to call him and take orders.
"Thank you, Mai- Madame", Julian quickly corrected himself, remembering how the head of the Amethyne family doesn't tolerate being addressed informally. He was usually shy when he was praised by someone (even though there was much to be praised for), believing that his actions and rich harvest spoke louder than words. And still, Maive's praise was very flattered, for it was hard to surprise noble madame.
Her own offspring can't accomplish that...
"Your hard work has helped in the development of not only Pelican Town, but also Ridgeside Village, and I am deeply happy that you are trying for the benefit of not only yourself, but others as well." The old madam spoke again.
"I want to thank you for that, farmer. On behalf of myself and the entire Amethyne family." Maive looked straight into Julian's multicolored eyes as she said the last phrase, with proud, as if he were her own child for having succeeded in exams.
Julian was slightly taken aback by such a frank admission, and only smiled broadly and sincerely, bowing slightly to Madame. This answer satisfied Maive quite well. "His parents have raised the boy to be a gentleman. Good to know", Maive thought with some relief.
"Between you and me, I'm amazed at how much patience you have with me. A lot of people I talk to usually think I'm callous when I'm not afraid to be honest about them. I thank you for that patience, for all of us."
They were both silent again for a moment, returning to contemplating the beautiful sunset. The rustle of leaves underfoot, the gentle cool breeze, and the smell of mushrooms-Julian loves autumn with all his heart, but after Maive's words, he couldn't concentrate on the scenery any longer. Memories come rushing into his head...
.................................
It seemed that Aria's crying was never ending and would soon escalate into a more loud, hysterical cry. "Gra- Grandmother..." "Ariah... You're Amethyne, now act like it!"
"Grandmother, stop! Don't say that about our family!" "How. Dare you?!" A loud slap was heard in the huge hall of the manor, and after a second, a shocked Zayne covered his cheek with his hand, feeling his skin reddening and burning. "So many children and grandchildren, and not a single worthy candidate! You are pathetic, all of you." Compared to Maive's cold words, the slap didn't hurt her grandson that much anymore.
"Don't even think about it, Louie! Your last exams had a score of less than 90%, and that's something I won't encourage. You will stay home to study", Louie shifted his gaze from his older brother to his grandmother, and he tilted his head, saying a little more quietly: "Yes, Grandmother. I'm sorry..."
"Living under constant pressure is unbearable." "I miss my parents and my brother so much..." "Ms. Ariah is very stressed today." "I'm such a coward." "Can we ever break this our family curse?! "Your father is just selfish, arrogant - "Mother, stop it!" *Sniff* *Hic* Grandmother...
"You're an Amethyne, now act like it!"
....................................
Julian took a deep inhale and exhale. The picture of the most famous family in the entire Republic was a very contradictory one. And yet it was these people-the ever-cranky Louie, the ever-busy Ariah, the ever-workaholic Irine and Sonny, the ever-impatient Maive, the ever-condemning Zayne, who was always judging himself for being a coward-they were the very people who had become his first friends in Ridgeside Village.
Grandpa and Grandma wouldn't be friends with bad people. And can you call a person exceptionally bad? It's much easier to look at the world as black and white. Except the world is all shades of gray.
Patience. This world need patience.
"Your grandparents were my best friends. They were there for me in joy and in sorrow", Maive once again raised her voice, catching Julian's attention. Her face expressed an unaccustomed sadness, it was rare for anyone to catch her like this, beyond her usual impassive expression, anger or annoyance.
It was as if the noble old lady could read minds, for she guessed what Julian was thinking. Even after everything, he gave her family a chance to get to know them better.
Just like his grandparents gave her a chance when she was young.
...............................
"Maive, explain yourself! Our servants saw you in the arms of those two peasants! Do you think that's how a young lady of your status should behave?"
"Mother!", Maeve was surprised at how defiant her voice sounded, "They are my friends!"
"Friends? Your "friends" are always walking around in dirty, filthy clothes like pigs, poking their noses into other people's business and hanging out with those strange men with swords! And you cal them your friends?"
"Don't you DARE say that about them!" Maive immediately regretted her raised tone when her mother quickly walked up to her and gave her a loud and painful slap.
"How dare you speak to me like that?! To your own mother! I put so much effort into protecting you, keeping you safe. I do everything for you. And this is how you thank me?!", Her voice was already breaking into hysterical notes, but she immediately quieted her fervor as her daughter fell to her knees and began to sob quietly, holding her right cheek with her snow-white hand.
"Maive..." The mother's heart clenched at the sight of what she had done to her own blood. But her gaze quickly changed, and she uttered a phrase that had haunted all members of the Amethyne family for generations. Like a curse, like an executioner's axe cleaving the air, making the walls of the old mansion tremble every time:
"Y o u a r e A m e t h y n e, s o a c t l i k e i t !"
.........................................
Following the young farmer's example, Maive also slowly took a deep breath in and out. Her whole life was a lifetime of service for her family, of striving for excellence and sacrificing so much for success, including her own happiness and mental health. The endless darkness of the golden cage of Amethyne, into which rays of light break through only occasionally, allowing them to feel free for a moment.
That ever-annoying farmer and his girlfriend became the very light in Maive's life. Just like their grandson became a ray of light for her and her descendants.
The Madame carefully, on her high heels, stepped closer to Julian, gently took his face and kissed him on the forehead. Poor Julian was, to say at least, shocked - he did not expect this from someone like Maive, how she looked at him tenderly, as his own mother looked at Julian...
"All the wealth of our family is not enough to thank you for all that you and your family have done for all of us", Julian could have sworn that when Maive pulled away from him, Madame's wrinkled eyes showed sparkling drops, like the purest diamond, that were about to run down her face.
