every time I read battle of the labyrinth or just think about Daedalus in general, I only ever see Michiel Huisman (perhaps specifically as daario naharis)

there's such a charming annoyance about him..... he looks like he'd invent something and go "that shit wasn't good enough and anyone who thinks it was is stupid" and also have a dead son

Prefacing by saying I love Percy Jackson. I love the books, I love the characters, I went to the House of Hades book tour, I've been a camper at the literal Camp Half Blood in Austin, TX. And I will continue to love everything about it.
The show needs work. Which saddens me but makes sense :(
The cast is perfect, I think the main three can really embody the roles, and the other kids introduced really shined in the short times they've had.
The problem with the show is that it doesn't trust the way the book told the story. It's all far too much "Telling and not Showing." There's far too many instances where one of the three will go "That's ___" and they don't learn who the monster is organically.
The book was written in a way to teach kids Greek mythology. The show assumes we know everything. This works for readers who are interested in a slightly different adaptation that still follows the plot but it really leaves behind anyone who doesn't know what's going on.
The show is simply having one of the three go "That's ___. Here's what we need to do." And they talk about it instead of formulating a clever little plan. We got a glimpse of this problem with the Medusa episode when they immediately knew it was her. (I personally like the episode but I do think it was the start of the issues.) I think it gets a pass because everyone knows Medusa, she's an incredibly famous Greek figure. A garden of statues Obviously leads to the conclusion that the monster is Medusa. But it really took something away for the kids immediately to go "That's Medusa." And then still accept her hospitality. They should've accepted hospitality from this random woman- there would still be opportunity to humanize her like in the episode- learned it was Medusa, and then show that she's still a threat.
The kids in the books are smart, but have incredibly "stupid" moments because they're 12; this is how they get into sticky situations where they're nearly killed and they put clues together to figure out who the monster is.
In the later episodes, it's much worse.
I think the most blaring examples are the Lotus Casino and Procrustes. If you do not have any interest in Greek mythology or haven't read the books, you don't know the Lotus eaters or Procrustes. For them to have Grover immediately go "This is the home of the Lotus Eaters." And Percy to go "You're Procrustes." within SECONDS of seeing the threat, it takes away any and all tension, suspicion, excitement, etc. Suddenly the kids aren't learning and growing, theyre omniscient. You're also not naturally teaching these original myths to new viewers. A lot of the people Don't know the Odyssey, and it's weird to have one of the main three characters go "These are the Lotus Eaters that faced Odysseus, stay careful." It's jarring. Procrustes is even more jarring if you've never read the books, because my first reaction would be "Who??? Why is he in a mattress shop?? Am I supposed to know who this is???" We are supposed to learn that he's a threat through the way he acts, but he's not given a chance to act, we're just Told he kills people by a kid who's supposed to be completely new to this mythical world!!!
There's so much potential. The kids are golden and a great show is RIGHT at the writers finger tips but it needs to be "Show, not Tell" PLEASE I'm BEGGING you to TRUST your Source material, because it's following the plot but widdling it down so much that it's nearly a Sparknotes.
