What is the current status of KOSA? As of last night, 2024-04-20, this is what congress.gov had to say about it:

I'm seeing lots of posts fearmongering about how it's passed the Senate and is now in the House.

I've seen coordinated attacks against the democratic process over the past 8+ years. It would not surprise me in the least to learn that this might be part of a coordinated attack to get us to let up pressure on our Senators, letting them think that we're suddenly okay with it.

Please remember that Tumblr can just as easily be used to spread misinformation as Twitter or Facebook or Instagram or TikTok. Check authoritative sources.

What I would do? Call your senators, your representative, and the White House switchboard to leave comments on pending legislation.

The government website says it's still in the Senate. Call your senators to oppose it as a current issue.

Call your representative to oppose it as a heads-up to ensure they are aware of it and your opposition.

Call the White House to ensure that President Biden knows not to sign it if it crosses his desk.

Former President Trump already destroyed 50 years of women's rights, and presided over the initial hysteria of the anti-trans groups. He appointed enough justices to the Supreme Court that we're guaranteed social regression until at least two conservative justices retire and are replaced with new Ruth Bader Ginsbergs. He and the GOP (he is basically synonymous with the GOP, after Laura was elected as co-chair) have done a huge amount of damage to our ways of life and our ability to address climate change and global warming. We need to say that enough is enough, and that they won't deprive us of our abilities to discuss the topics they find uncomfortable and want to prevent any kids from hearing about in any online spaces their kids could possibly stumble into.

OUR LIVES AND EXISTENCE AND CULTURE ARE NOT POLITICAL PAWNS TO BE BARTERED AWAY IN BACKROOM DEALS.

This project I think is called kosa is a great example of irresponsible parents trying to blame the Internet for their children's strange behavior and not blame themselves for not seeing what their children see on the Internet

Okay so this morning I saw on the news "the government taking steps to protect children online" and I PANICKED cause I thought it was KOSA, but it wasn't KOSA! It was this thing called Know2Protect. I don't know all the details, but from what I heard on the news (CBS), Know2Protect is basically a program that's meant to TEACH children and adults how to protect themselves online (as opposed to KOSA, which wants to censor the internet). I'm not entirely certain about this thing, but! Know2Protect SOUNDS like it might be the answer to our problem! It's what we wanted, right? For the government to teach people how to protect themselves from online predators instead of censoring the internet?

Maybe this should give people some hope, I will tell you all this, even if Kosa gets passed into US law, even on an international level, the ACLU will sue the hell out of Congress for violating the first and fourth amendment, civil rights, and internet freedom, I was told this by a friend who did their research on this and it made me feel a bit better.

Do look up who the ACLU is to understand, but to give a small explanation, it stands for American Civil Liberties Union, and what they do is that they defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

Do let others know about this, I want people to have some hope.

reminder that the House is not voting on KOSA today! They’re literally just talking about the bill and if it will be a good idea or not iirc. Hearings are different from something being voted on!

Small reminder to stay calm even if the bill does get approved tomorrow.

Remember, the bill still has a very long way to go before it becomes an official law all around the U.S., and even if it does get to the president, there will be a very long 18 month time-frame where we can fight as much as we possibly can in order for it to be revoked (remember all of the other laws and bills in the past that got revoked because of protests).

Listen, I get that you're scared. I get that you're scared of losing everything that you've worked for, and that's okay. But thinking that it's all over by tomorrow if it gets approved is not a very good mindset to have. Remember, the reason why it hasn't gotten approved yet is because we've all been speaking out against it and refusing to back down even when it seems hopeless. Be optimistic. Be confident in everyone around you working with you in order to succeed in not letting these terrible bills pass.

It's not just KOSA you should be fighting against either. There are many bills like the recent FISA ACT and the Earn It Act that are also threats to our rights. Please advocate against those just as much as you've done for KOSA. Let's fight for our futures together as one.

What KOSA would destroy for me:

Online has been a place I could freely express myself in a way that felt safe and comfortable for me. A place where I am finding my identity and people. I am a very anxious person and socailizing is very hard for me. I lost most of my friends when I had to move. Online is a space where I can engage with people in a way that feels safe and where I can keep in touch. This place has also been a place for me to explore my queer identity. My family isn't really queer and they don't understand it. They don't understand the community here and they do not know my complicated relationship with gender. Im here because this space is the space I finally can belong in. Where I don't feel alienated from people in general. Where I don't feel like the odd one out everywhere no matter how hard I try to fit. And Im lucky to have a family that won't hurt me for being the way I am though. A lot of my friends cannot say the same. Online is frequently a place where people go when no one irl will support them. By enacting this bill these safe spaces will be destroyed for me and my friends. People who don't know or understand us will take away anything they deem wrong based on thier own small minded biases. What is going to happen when the friends that have abusive parents can monitor every little thing they do and can ensure they can never access the help they need? This bill endangers minors. It endangers poc and queer people. It endagers disabled and nuerodivergent people. It endangers everyone that my rich white government deems thier target. This is a violation of freedom of speech. And this bill cannot pass for the safety of my friends and so many people out there. Do not ruin our good thing. Do not destroy the thing that keeps so many of the people I love alive.
