How to Find Correspondences and Associations in Pop Culture Paganism and Pop Culture Witchcraft

Maybe you’ve been in this situation before or maybe in it right now. You’re ready to work within PCW/PC Paganism and you already have someone in mind that you’re wanting to work with or already working with someone. But you’re unsure what to give as offerings, how to decorate your altar, anything along those lines and perhaps they aren’t as well known to others, so no one’s come up with a correspondence and association list yet you can work off of. Well in this post, we hope to remedy those hypothetical hiccups and supposed snags.

For the purposes of this post, we’ll be looking into five types of sourcing. These are as follows

Primary sourcing

Supplemental sourcing

Communal sourcing

Archetypical sourcing

Personal sourcing

Primary Sourcing

Exactly what it says on the tin; getting information from their primary source(s). This could include gathering information from their color schemes and outfits, canonical likes and dislikes, traits mentioned in dialogue pertaining to your character of choice, anything that primarily takes place or is noted in their primary, canonical universe. For example, if a character wears primarily red, then red can be a color correspondence/association with them. If a character often dresses in dark apparel with skull motifs, then it can (usually) be assumed that skulls and/or death is a correspondence/association with them. If your character lives in say either a body of water and is seemingly comfortable in said environment, then chances are, water is going to be an elemental association/correspondence for them.

Supplemental Sourcing

Similar to primary sourcing, supplemental sourcing comes from anything affiliated with their primary, canonical, universe, but not directly a part of it such as spin-off series’s. The closer it is to the main source, the more accurate it may tend to be for whomever you’re working with. For example, a character I work with is primarily from a video game, but there is also spin-off comics and even mobile games that include them. Though outside the game they originated from, these may still have details we can draw from to add to the list of possible correspondences/associations.

Communal Sourcing

Aka “what does the fandom for this character/this character’s source associate with them?” This may vary whether or not you interact with the fandom in the first place and assuming you follow an egregoric model or variation of it in your practice. Depending on the size of the fandom and attention towards your character of choice, associations may be imbued into them due to the amount of energy fed into their egregore or overall perception.

Archetypical Sourcing

Character that share similar archetypes to say “traditional” deities and the like may also share the same correspondences/associations in those same groups. Ex: A character associated with battle and war may have correspondences/associations with stones/herbs/imagery/etc. associates with deities like Mars, Ares, etc.

Personal Sourcing

What do you associate with this character? What correspondences feel right for them in your view? This may especially come in handy if your character of choice has little to go off of in primary, secondary, or communal sourcing. Think of what comes to mind when you think of them. Perhaps even employ meditation, divination, astral travel and communication, or other methods to gather what you can from them.

In most cases, your correspondence/association list will come from a blend of all five of these sourcing methods. However, what matters most is your own experimentations and experiences and what works best for you and your relationship with your character of choice. Results may always vary after all.

this is a religious post, not a fandom one.

the shoguns inspirations religiously vary, so these are mostly upg connections. as inazuma has some obvious shinto inspirations religiously throughout; her power is mostly that of a governing god and she can and should be honored alongside the natural environment and local deities of inazuma, not treated like a singular deity that rules independently from everything else.

devotional correspondences:

rules over: storms; thunder/lightning. fertility/agriculture (storms=rain=growth), war/soldiers (shes venerated by soldiers and fought alongside them), politics/political change. her connection to politics and war cannot really be ignored, as she is a warrior and leader herself.

offerings: desserts, perserved flowers/animals especially skulls of animals pertinent to/representative of her, poems, books and plays especially those by japanese authors (political discourse/battle are favored best as a subject), small amounts of wine/sake (if you are of age), weapons, traditional japanese meals.

devotional acts: study of war and war tactics, physical activity especially self defense, study of japanese history especially that of periods of war (respectfully, please), meditation and self reflection (in a healthy, constructive way), healing of trauma/therapy work, care of your natural environment, repurposing/use of reusable items in a careful considered way, honoring and loving your friends and loved ones; fostering truly healthy active relationships, taking medication, learning about DID/OSDD and supporting systems around you, supporting those affected by war and conflict

epithets:

epithets are not typically used to call upon her as they would with other deities; her titles are usually used more in a simple honoring sense, and mostly allude to her beauty, longevity, or power.

associations:

plants: grains like rice and oat, peaches, ivy, mushrooms (ones that are safe to eat, but poisonous ones handled well and disposed of when necessary are also great), yarrow, poisonous plants, medicinal plants, warm and earthy tea herbs, hardy and strongly growing plants like weeds.

crystals: lepidolite, pearls, garnet, black tourmaline, bloodstone, black onyx, nuummite, grey agate. any crystals that promote grounding, meditation, and personal healing from trauma.

animals: boar, wolves, bats especially vampire bats and fox-faced bats, birds of prey especially vultures, snakes, prehistoric mammals. foxes could also be considered an animal totem of hers, but i choose to view the wolves as more symbolic of her aggressive/single minded nature. any animals with personally protective/guarding connotations.
