the thing about these scenes is that obviously they are friends. you could argue that in 02x13 arthur does actually believe his words, but they've already been through so much that anything less than friendship would honestly be ridiculous, even if he doesn't quite see it - though i think he does.

i think the main point here is that both arthur and merlin in their respective scenes are trying to achieve something. in 02x13 merlin was closed off, upset, wouldn't speak to arthur. so he did what he always does - tried and tried again. to me, the friend line is an invitation, a reminder, that they are friends - or "could be" as a way to not push his luck with wording, that merlin should be able to tell arthur what's bothering him. beyond that, it's also a joke, a nudge, a kind of effort to make merlin smile, even if his aim is more serious than that.

now 04x01? it's a callback. they've just talked about their worries, arthur admitting his fear of dying, merlin attempting to calm him down, because at the end of the day, he knows he'd step in given the chance (and, yknow, they're also...friends). but again, it goes further than that, the lines just before this - arthur makes a point of still not having merlin figured out, which is kind of a theme through these conversations, where merlin will keep parts of himself hidden and arthur will try to figure it out anyways.

of course, it's not all exactly the same - the roles are reversed in 04x01, but that is the point. it's merlin attempting to tease, to make arthur smile by referencing the way those conversations go, how arthur often avoids calling them friends or what not, which i think is made clearer by the lines that follow - ones that do make him smile. you can also see merlin consider throwing out the friends line before he actually does it, because it does require arthur to remember or in the least understand what merlin is doing. this could be debated, but i think arthur does get it, even if it doesn't immediately work the way merlin intended.

it's almost never just about what they say, it's about what they don't say.

i just about cried in that sequence where finna is helping merlin up the stairs

and then merlin collapses because he’s literally bleeding to death and about to pass out 

but the only thing he says, as he’s teetering on the edge of unconsciousness, is this:

he’s dying.  and this is what he says.  

it’s what he tells mordred in 5.05.  it’s what he tells gilli.  it’s what he keeps telling himself, over and over again, no matter how much evidence to the contrary piles up at his feet, no matter how much he continues to suffer.  as if he has to keep repeating it to convince himself.  as if it’s a reflex now.

things will be better.  things will be better.  things will be better.

merlin has no choice but to keep believing this, or else all of his terrible pain and loss will have been for nothing.  or else all of the people who died to keep him safe will have died for nothing.  or else everything he’s given up for the sake of his people’s future freedom will have been sacrificed for nothing.  

he has to keep telling himself this, even if deep down inside he isn’t always sure that it’s true anymore.

it won’t always be like this.  things will be better.

Hard agree.

I'm against deleting old things online, because they show how progress. Might look cringe and embarrassing to you, but those fanworks were part of your life, reflect where you were (both as person and as fan). And, while they might be cringe on the technical aspect (speaking of both fanfics and arts here), they might include prompts and ideas that are fresh and more imaginative than what today!you can come up with.

Personally, I admit that with hindsight I hate the characterization of the first slash pair I ever wrote and published fics for (Draco/Harry - they are more OC than the original, because I elaborated on the characterization I was seeing in other fics, more than the original material), but some of the plots ideas I still love so much and I'm so sad that I never went to finish them (some don't even have complete notes/storyboard so I don't even know how the story was meant to evolve or end). Also, I used a different style that I can't seem to find again, but it was an amazing style. I miss that time, I was a different (and more prolific) writer. :(

Today I’m re-reading a Star Wars fanfic that I wrote in the late 80s, which is all over the place in POV and has all the symptoms of being an immature 15 year old writer, but is still very much dear to my heart. When I wrote the story, I had no idea that any other human being wrote stories based on tv or movies. I had never met one, anyway. I just thought it was me and my spiral notebook, writing for myself, and for my one Star Wars fan friend who I swore to secrecy.

Anyway.

I pulled the story out of the archives today to have a morning of coffee and nostalgia — and instead wound up learning some Very Useful Writer Insights about me as a writer, because apparently, even back then, Iwas a big fan of these tropes:

- very slow burn

- there was only one bed

- unexpected psychic connection

- fish out of water scenarios

- sass and banter

- friends to lovers

- long-ass stories

TL;DR: Don’t delete your old stories, or if you do, keep a copy for yourself. Looking back at the writer you were helps you understand the writer you are, and may still want to be.
