I used to love looking at walls adorned with all kinds of posters. I like the repetition, the layering, the tearing to see the poster sedimentary layers that came before. In this sketch, I concentrated mainly on the framing of the poster conglomeration.

Pete’s Tavern has a special meaning for me, aside from being made famous by O’Henry. I had dinner there on an ice-cold night in January 2008, my last meal before I left NYC for good.

In this meditation I used water-soluble ink to sketch Pete’s Tavern. I flooded the area with water to blur the lines and ended up dissolving all the details. I penned them back in, leaving me with Pete’s Tavern at twilight.

This was one of my favorite places in NYC. O’Henry, the writer, hung out here. After discovering that fact, I read through his stories again with new interest. I felt closer to what was happening in his narratives knowing that I walked down the same streets as his characters.
