Tumblr media
you hadn’t really been properly asleep anyway, having drifted off in a half-slumber after scrolling mindlessly on your phone for a while, and you supposed that was why the sudden sound of it ringing from its place still loosely clasped in your hand woke you up so easily. everything was still vaguely blurry when you pushed yourself onto your elbows, squinting hard in order to see the name of the contact flashing across your screen. mark met your eyes, and you flopped backwards onto your mattress before tapping the accept button and then pressing the same hand to your mouth to stifle a yawn.
“are you awake?”
you pulled the phone back from your ear to aim a slightly incredulous look at it, even if you knew your best friend would’ve been none the wiser to the expression.
“i mean, i am now. what is it, markles? did you forget something?”
mark stumbled over his next words, muttering them under his breath more than anything. “no, but.. ah, nevermind, dude, it’s fine. i don’t know why i called.”
you sat up slightly in your bed, ignoring the slight chill the blanket falling away from yourself gave you, eyebrows furrowed a little in concern at the unsure tone of your friend. “mark? what’s up?”
he started to say something more but cut himself off, words trailing off into nothing. it was silent on the phone for a few moments then, only the sound of your shared faint breathing coming through the lines until he finally got his words together and spoke up properly.
“i’m, um. i’m outside your apartment.”
that woke you up fully, eyes widening a little as you stood up out of your bed, leaving it unmade as you padded over to your window and looked down more than a few floors to the street outside—where, if you squinted, you could almost make out mark’s figure lit up by the streetlights and standing alone on the pavement, recognisable mostly by his familiar fleece jacket.
“what the fuck, mark? i’ll buzz you in, come on. you must be freezing, i don’t—why are you over here so late? did donghyuck sexile you, or something?”
you stayed at the window just long enough to watch his small head shake before moving over to your door in order to let him up, shivering again with the now complete lack of your blanket.
“nah, he’s at jeno’s. i just.. i don’t know. i missed you, man.”
the words made you stop in your tracks, for a second. his voice was small, but it sounded sincere—and it was sincere, you knew it was, because mark couldn’t have told a lie even if he was paid to do it. had been earnest since before he knew what it meant. you covered how choked up you suddenly felt by scoffing, depsite it sounding weak even to your own ears.
“yah, you sweet talker, you probably just want me to make you a hot chocolate. get up here already, hm?”
his laugh was barely that, sounded more like an exhale of air than anything, but you were glad for it all the same. quiet fell over the two of you again, but this time it was more comfortable, with only the idle sounds of the elevator and his footfalls coming all the way to your door.
“see you in a sec,” was all you murmured through the line before hanging up and shoving your phone into the pocket of your sweats, fiddling with the lock on the door for a moment, another, before it was finally open and mark was standing before you.
he looked tired—you weren’t surprised, seeing the last time you checked it was creeping past two in the morning—but his mouth still curved up into a small smile that you mirrored with ease, beckoning him in and pushing the door shut behind him, reaching out with the tips of your fingers to slide the lock into place.
“so what’s up, markl—“
before the nickname could fully pass your lips mark was falling into you, head finding solace tucked into the crook of your neck hands coming up to loosely grip onto the fabric of your shirt on your waist. his fingertips were red from the cold, but his cheek was hot from where it was resting on your shoulder.
“can we.. go t’bed?”
it was just as mumbled as it’d been over the phone, but this time a lot louder—he was right next to your ear, after all, the periodic soft exhales hitting your skin causing little shivers running across it that weren’t from the chill, this time. you simply nodded in answer to his request and attempted to detach yourself from his grip to walk him over to your unmade (but comfortable, you defended to yourself) mess of a bed, but mark made a vaguely whiny noise of protest and clung onto you tighter.
your laugh came out a little too high in the dead silence of your apartment, hoping even if mark did notice the way your ears burned a little hotter that he’d be kind enough (or tired enough, at least) not to bring it up as you slowly walked him to the sheets, trying not to trip up on his feet shuffling backwards, trying not to focus on the way he felt so malleable in your careful hold.
“take this off,” you murmured lowly once you’d reached the foot of your bed, tugging gently at the fleece he was still wearing and trying not to cringe at how suggestive your words sounded even if your intentions were innocent. you focused on nudging at his feet, too, where his shoes were still on. “and these. you’re not putting your dirty trainers anywhere near my blanket, markles, for real.”
“mm.” was all he hummed in reply, but didn’t move from his spot. you were ready to do it for him if it came down to it, but before you could reach for the zipper of his jacket he taking half a step back, barely out of your space, and doing it himself. they were left lying idle on your floor once he’d rid himself of both the offending items, but you figured they’d be just fine for a night—it wasn’t like you didn’t have a few hoodies and jeans doing exactly the same thing while you avoided putting them away properly for a day or two longer.
where you stopped in your place once he had deemed himself ready go, unsure of what move to make next, mark had no such qualms. he let himself fall back onto your sheets and got himself comfortable like they were his own, the way his brow furrowed when he didn’t see you following a clear indication of what he wanted you to do, and you found yourself being able to do nothing but comply with his wishes, slipping in next to him after abandoning your phone on the bedside table.
the lights were faint, streetlights only just shining in through your window, but you could still see his brown eyes trained on your own as you led there face-to-face. you tried to speak but, embarrassingly enough, your throat failed you, and so you only tried again after turning to the side for a moment to clear it.
“are you okay?”
the smile was back. still small, still sincere. “i am now.” and. oh. mark was so—lovely, sometimes. all the time. you didn’t know what to do. but it seemed you didn’t need to, because then he was turning over, away from you, and then shifting backwards until it was all too clear right where he wanted you.
and so, swallowing back the way you felt choked up for the second that evening, you shuffled closer and slung an arm over his hip, feeling him relax under your touch almost instantly. it was more than just your blankets providing you with warmth, now. mark had always run a little hotter.
“night, markles.“ you mumbled half-into the nape of his neck, lips almost brushing his skin. there was a light sound as he tossed a hand back to find where yours was resting on his side and squeezed once. twice.
“see you t’morrow, ynnie.”
and that was all it needed to be. a boy in your arms, both in your bed. sharing warmth until the sunlight pouring in through your windows would force you to leave it. as simple as that.

⠀☆⠀00:12 AM
wow. that was—great. i had a good time, and i hope you did too. i think your phone’s dead, because you were all over chenle asking to borrow his, so maybe you’ll only hear this in the morning.  [he laughs]  i hope the hangover isn’t too awful tomorrow. my hip doesn’t hurt too bad from whacking it on that counter, in case you were wondering. i didn’t know you were gonna lift me like that, that was crazy! mark gave me a weird look when i came back to the others, but he always looks like that after a few shots—like he’s just sucked on a lemon. anyway, goodnight. get back to me soon, yeah? maybe we could do that again—it doesn’t have to be serious, no labels or anything. just a bit of fun between friends.
⠀☆⠀11:35 PM
[whispering]  my phone’s the one nearly dead this time. eight percent, so i gotta make it quick. tonight was.. really nice. thanks again. the takeout was really cool of you too, and i’ll pay you back when i get in. i’m talking so quiet ‘cause im in an uber, and i think i just saw the driver giving me a dirty look through the mirror. he has his own playlist on—i mean, unless there’s a new radio station called ‘on the grind’ with two fire emojis and, like, the one of the arm flexing? it’s all been pretty bad stuff so far, but there was this one song, and—it kinda reminded me of you, a bit.  [a pause, before he brushes over it]  i tried to shazam it because i’d look weird leaning over the console to see what it was called, but it was over by then. bummer! we’re coming up on my street now, though, and i’m on three percent now, so i’ll go. see you soon?
⠀☆⠀09:47 PM
injunnie asked me about that mark you left. i made up something about my kitchen cabinet door, but i know he didn’t really believe me. he had that look in his eye, you know? that one where it feels like he sees right through you. anyway.. maybe we should keep them somewhere less noticeable next time? we’re not—you know.
i’m going out with mark and chenle tonight. they’re doing a two-for-one on cocktails and there’s karaoke, so i think it’ll be fun. i probably won’t see it ‘til tomorrow, but call back when you hear this.  [he laughs]  or if i am still up and drunk when you call then you can sing me a lullaby, yeah?  [an awkward pause]  uh. i’ll just—talk to you later.
⠀☆⠀10:26 AM
[hesitant]  oh my god. i didn’t—sorry. i should’ve told you i had someone over. i completely forgot about the brunch thing, it’s my fault. kind of a dick move, too, i really am sorry. i don’t know how to.. i’ll buy you dinner, or something. to make it up to you.
[a prolonged pause]
[haltingly]  that—that was just a one-time thing, though. just.. just in case you were wondering. it won’t happen again.
[another pause, and the sound of him shifting in his place]
so, um. yeah. i just wanted to apologise, ‘cause you were gone before i could get the chance. call me when you hear this? if you want to, that is.
⠀☆⠀00:03 AM
i guess.. i guess you’re busy, or something. sorry. i know it’s late. you’re probably asleep. or working? renjun told me you’re on night shifts now.. did it slip your mind with me? or maybe you’ve told me already, i don’t know. i think my memory’s been getting worse lately.  [a scoffed laugh]  fuck, maybe you’re with—you know. someone else? that’d be fine, obviously, i know we’re not.. yeah. hell, i was the one who said we weren’t gonna be exclusive.
[a pause]
i haven’t been, um. seeing anyone else, though. not since that last time. it’s just you. but if you were, then.. anyway. i heard jeno tell you his friend was single the other day. that jaemin guy? and that restaurant downtown would be nice for a night out, tonight. they do that salad you like, and—and the side dishes.
[a second pause. he takes a breath in]
i think.. i think i need a drink. text me once you listen to this?
⠀☆⠀11:58 PM
[sounding a little breathless]  hi! i think im going to fill your inbox up at this point. maybe the reception’s bad in the taxi. but anyway—i had fun tonight. again. i.. i missed you, you know?  [a giggle]  wow, i think i feel a little light-headed. in a good way, obviously. i almost forgot what it was like with you. oh! and the actual reason i called—you left your hoodie here. better come grab it soon, or i’ll have it for myself. you can never have too many clothes.  [he stops for a moment] does that sound too.. ah, nevermind. i hope you get home alright. talk to you tomorrow, baby.
⠀☆⠀10:49 PM
renjun asked me what we were doing. i knew he probably knew—or at least, like, had an idea of what was going on—but it still surprised me. nearly choked on my drink when he sprung it on me out of nowhere. i thought he just wanted to get lunch. i told him the truth—that we’re just.. messing around. he’s not gonna tell any of the others, so don’t worry. he thought—  [a stilted laugh]  he thought that we were together. but.. well. we’re not, obviously.
[a pause. he mumbles something to himself, cuts himself off, then tries again]
did jeno give you jaemin’s number? he had that gross grin on his face the other night, that same one he did when he kept trying to set chenle up on a blind date. and you never did tell me if you were out with him the other night. not that it, like, matters. but still.
[a second, longer pause]
anyway. i think i’m gonna go to bed. can we get dinner soon? i’ll pay.
⠀☆⠀11:18 PM
hey.  [a small pause]  i don’t know why i’m calling, really. i’m just at my apartment. watching reruns and drinking through that wine chenle gave me—which is awful, by the way. i think he was just trying to get it out of his fridge by offloading it onto me.
that movie you told me you watched all the time back in uni was on earlier. i would’ve called then, but my phone was dead, so i kept it on. it was pretty good, actually. kinda.. sappy. but in a good way. romantic, i don’t know. romcoms have never really been my thing, but i know they’re yours, so.. yeah.  [a tired laugh, and a pause. the tv is faintly audible in the background]  i didn’t know i could get wine tipsy this early. maybe that’s why i called out of the blue? ah, i don’t know. i’ll go now, though—this episode’s just starting to get interesting. let’s talk later.
⠀☆⠀01:21 AM
[he’s yelling, almost, struggling to be heard over the beat of the song blasting through the speakers]  yah, why did you dip? i was—i was looking forward to tonight, you know. jeno is boring, and mark is a lightweight, and jisung steps on my feet when we dance. it would’ve been way better with you here. and i miss you, baby. they need to fire the DJ here, because they’re seriously awful. i might just ditch the rest and come find you instead.
[he stops, considering it]
actually.. yeah. you won’t mind, will you? yah, pick up, c’mon. call me back, ‘cause i’m on my way to your apartment. i’ll buy a bottle of malibu on the way so it won’t taste as awful when we throw it up later, and you can set up that speaker chenle got you last year, because i know you probably still have it stuffed in a closet somewhere.  [his voice returns to normal volume, and the music is abruptly significantly quieter]  get your dancing shoes on, baby. and.. take your shirt off?  [he giggles, and his laughter interrupts his goodbye]  i’ll be there soon!
⠀☆⠀02:17 AM
fuck. can’t you just—can you pick up? please? i need it, i need you to hear this. i feel like i’m going insane, it’s fucked up.  [a pause, and a slightly shaky breath]  why did i say that? why did i say no labels? fucking.. fucking mark and shots and that bruise from that fucking counter. i’ve drank too much, and i hope i forget i’ve said this in the morning, but i—i need to know. it’s just you for me. that time with that guy was stupid, and i should’ve kicked him out as soon as i woke up, but i knew about brunch and i knew you’d be coming over and i was feeling petty so i just thought.. i thought you’d get jealous, i don’t know. it was stupid. i’m sorry for lying, baby. i didn’t mean to. is it—is it just me for you too? did you save jaemin’s number? did you text him? please tell me you didn’t. he doesn’t know anything about you, not like i do. i still have your hoodie, and renjun thinks i need to get my shit together, and chenle nearly threw up on my shoes on the way out the bar, and i just.. i want you. i want you so bad, it’s killing me.
[a long pause. his mumbling is inaudible]
call me back when you hear this.

Tumblr media
jaemin was synonymous with the click of his camera.
it followed him wherever he went, on all outings he could get away with, and on the ones he couldn’t he found his phone to be a worthy enough replacement. for him it seemed to be something of a second nature—he simply had the feeling of what would look perfect, of the best moments to snap a photo of and immortalise forever. he barely had to think before he was raising the viewfinder to his eye and nudging things just so until he was satisfied and pressing the shutter.
his collection was a wide one, one that spanned over too many memory cards to keep track of. he kept all of the ones he’d acquired over the months in an old jewelry box some earrings you’d bought him for a past birthday present had come in, and had decorated it in cat stickers and tacky plastic gems and sharpied scribbles in all of the bright colours he could find.
the photos themselves were of anything that had caught his eye in that moment in time. his cats, the view from the balcony of his apartment overlooking the rest of the city, the stolen split seconds he wanted to keep from your trips together to all sorts of places, the food that he’d eaten, all of your friends both individually and as a whole, always laughing and always painted in such a light you could almost feel the love he had for them all pouring out from the screen. it was anything he wanted and differed from day to day, never staying consistent for too long.
there was only one overarching theme, one thing that was always there. the one thing he had more photos of than anything else. and that was you.
you were—in his own words, whispered into your ears on more occasions than you could count on two hands—his forever muse. it’d be impossible to scroll past five photos he’d taken without one with you in them, even if it was something as small as your blurred hand in motion in the corner, the back of your head in amongst a crowded room, your silhouette turning towards him against the setting sun. jaemin’s work revolved as much around you as it did everything else, and he was never reluctant to make it known.
you didn’t mind, of course. you were happy your boyfriend had found something he so obviously had both a passion and talent for, and put in so much love into doing. it only got a little embarrassing when it came to him printing out his favourites and you were forced to look at countless amounts of yourself in all sorts of places in all sorts of angles all while jaemin cooed over and smiled adoringly at them. it had taken a fair amount of convincing (and an even larger amount of affection) to get him to move the photo of you opposite him at your one-year anniversary dinner, a glass of wine in one hand while the other covered your mouth as you burst out laughing at something he’d said, from the hallway where anyone who walked into your apartment could see to the spare room that he’d made his impromptu study.
the only other problem you had with him using you as his main subject was when he’d choose to snap the pictures. he insisted you looked gorgeous in all of them, no matter what time it was nor what you were doing, and he was so earnest about it that you almost believed him. it didn’t make it any less jarring when you heard the all-too-familiar click whenever you were least expecting it, though.
it came when you were doing the most mundane of things, like catching up on a drama donghyuck had recommended to you while lazing around on the sofa; afternoon sun spilling into the living room.
the main leads were arguing over something or other on screen, all in front of an audience of unfortunate extras. it panned over all the clearly uncomfortable characters witnessing the messy lover’s tiff and your eyes were suddenly drawn to one that looked an awful lot like your boyfriend. the scene cut away again, but you reached over with a groan to where the remote had been carelessly tossed to rewind and pause on the frame.
once it had stopped you called over your shoulder towards the kitchen, where jaemin was most likely throwing something together for a late lunch.
“babe, c’mere. doesn’t this guy look just like you?”
you heard his footsteps moving in your direction, but he didn’t respond, and so you hoisted yourself up to tilt your head over the back of the sofa to see what he was doing.
click.
although your line of sight was currently tipped upside down, the sight of jaemin with his camera in hand was still perfectly clear. you doubted your dirty look came off as very intimidating from your position, but you gave him your worst anyway before shifting upright again to face him.
“is it glued to you, or something? i don’t think anyone could look good upside down—and that includes me.”
he shook his head in vehement denial of your claim, letting his camera fall onto the cushions and flinging his arms around your shoulders.
“you always look good, silly. even upside down, or sideways, or all blurry. trust me.”
you sighed and wrapped your arms around his waist, reluctantly agreeing.
“fine, i’ll let you have it this time. but you didn’t answer my question—doesn’t he look just like you?”
his eyes flitted from yours to the still-paused drama, and his face morphed into an expression of vague disgust.
“did you just say he looks like me? oh my god, no. not in a million years.”
you scoffed and pulled away from the embrace, instead patting the space next to you as jaemin continued to pull faces at the unknowing side character on screen.
“alright, drama queen, it was just a thought. come and sit down, though. i wanna see who wins this fight.”
he hurried to comply, collapsing down next to you and almost immediately making room on your lap for his head after carefully setting his forgotten camera on the coffee table. you reached for the remote again, and carried on with your lazy afternoon in the sun.
or sometimes it came in the moments that were far less boring. the second instance (and arguably the worst) that came to mind was an evening after date he’d surprised you with after what had been a long week for the both of you. the lights were low in your shared bedroom as you stumbled through the door, jaemin practically clinging to your back with hands on your hips and breath hot in your ear. he nudged the door closed with his foot and tugged you to face him, his smile clear as day even in the dark.
you walked backwards towards the bed, trading kisses and a brief moment of laughter when he almost tripped over the jacket he hurried to shove off of his shoulders, and the way he cushioned your fall onto the mattress even if you both knew it wouldn’t have hurt a bit made a smile stretch across your lips.
his own grin was pressed into your skin when he felt your fingers fumble with his top button, and he slowly pushed away to take over the job. you closed your eyes, anticipating your boyfriend to return to your space soon, but instead—
click.
your eyes shot open, and there you found jaemin with his shirt half off and camera in hand, grin visible even from behind it.
“na jaemin. you cannot be for real right now.”
he had the decency to look a little sheepish as he brought the camera away from his face, one hand setting it down on the bedside table while the other raised in surrender.
“sorry, baby. couldn’t help it.”
you stayed unaffected to his attempts to lighten the mood again, allowing but not reciprocating the kisses he peppered across your face in apology even if you could see him biting his lips to try and hold back his laughter. it didn’t take long before he cracked, trying to muffle the sound into your shoulder despite his own shaking from the force of it. you rolled your eyes and tried to ignore the smile creeping across your own face, pushing yourself to sit up while jaemin settled himself in your lap, the occasional slightly hysterical-sounding giggles still bubbling out of him.
“you really know how to kill the mood, jaem.”
you weren’t actually irritated, not really. it was more a feeling of incredulity at how awful his timing was, if anything. you couldn’t ever really get properly mad at jaemin if you tried—something he knew as well as you did, and so only laughed again at your jab, cuddling in closer and tangling his fingers into the hair at the nape of your neck.
“yah, i said sorry. wine and a drama instead? we still haven’t finished sky castle.”
and, as it always seemed to go with jaemin, you were powerless to do anything but agree.
but, really, it was anywhere—no matter the time nor place. when you were barely awake, hair falling into your eyes when you pushed yourself up from where you’d been buried in your pillow and shirt riding up your stomach when you reached to scratch an itch on your shoulder. before you could say a word or blink the sleep out of your eyes you heard a familiar click, and groaned.
“jaem. you have enough unglams of me for a lifetime, cut it out.”
your complaint was paired with a blind swat in his general direction while you rubbed your eyes and shifted to sit up. he dodged easily, snickering, and the next thing you heard was the thud of his camera hitting the mattress and the warm body of your boyfriend dropping himself on top of you, pressing a kiss to your shoulder while his hands settled on your hips.
“unglams and you don’t belong in the same sentence, baby. bedhead looks sexy on you.”
you sighed, hands idly tangling themselves through his hair until your gaze drifted to the object sitting ignored on the bed and flung a hand out towards it, jostling jaemin in place. he whined in protest but stopped when he tilted his head up to face you and, instead of you looking back at him, was met with the lens of his own camera.
a few seconds passed without him moving, lying there unblinking until you huffed and jerked your knee up to nudge him in the stomach.
“you’re supposed to smile, jaem. or at least pose a little.”
that got him out of his short-lived daze, and he complied with your wishes; sending you a bright smile. your finger pressed down on the shutter, and as soon as you’d taken it you were pulling it away from your eyes so you could look at the photo. what greeted you was jaemin in all his glory, smile wide and eyes drifting off somewhere above the camera—to where you were behind it. they looked so soft as they gazed up at you it almost knocked you over, and just as quickly as he had earlier you discarded the object to cup his cheeks in your hands.
“you’re so..”
you trailed off to pinch his skin between your fingers and watch him squirm away, only returning back to his position once you’d reluctantly let go.
“so what?” was his eager question, smile looking more like a smirk.
you refused to give in, giving him nothing but a flat look in return.
“gross,” was your apathetic answer, and you had to hold back a smirk of your own when his complaints instantly began. served him right.
and as he continued to whine in his place sprawled across you, you reached for the camera again to take a second look at the photo—at jaemin. you decided quietly then that you really didn’t mind being his ‘forever muse,’ even if his timing wasn’t always the best.
or rather, you didn’t mind on one condition: that, occasionally, he could be your muse too. maybe you should look into investing in a camera of your own.

생각⠀stole roomie hyuck from isa.. i need him so bad
Tumblr media
a typical tuesday night for you normally consisted of exactly this: nothing. it was your nominated day of rest, the day you let yourself relax and turn on whatever trashy soap opera renjun had convinced you to watch that week on the basis that ‘it gets good after a few episodes, you just have to trust the process.’ you tugged on your favourite hoodie; a little threadbare from continual use but still ever comfortable, got warm under all the covers on your bed, and settled down ready to not move for at least a few hours, or if not then until you got hungry enough to go and find something to sustain yourself with.
that had been the original plan for that night as well, just the same as any other—until, of course, your somewhat-of-a-wild-card roommate donghyuck had to switch things up.
you were in the middle of scoffing over one of the scorned housewife’s confessionals when a yell of your name came from outside your door, prompting you to pause the show and wait for a moment in case hyuck elaborated on his shout. he didn’t, and so you yelled back a “what?” and awaited his reply.
“i need you in here!” was all the information he was willing to provide, and you heaved a sigh of surrender before slowly extracting yourself up out of your position buried within the various blankets and stuffed toys covering your bed to go and see what donghyuck wanted with you.
“what?” you groaned for the second time, coming to a pause in the doorway when you saw the pure amount of stuff covering your kitchen counters, ranging from pots to pans to a lonely onion gone stray from a pair further away and some steaks, all mixed in amongst other various ingredients and sauces. he wanted help with dinner, then.
but to your surprise, a simper of “keep me company?” paired with a pleading look and a pout was his request instead. you agreed fairly easily, on the term that he let you mix some of your own song choices in with his usual cooking playlist. your reward was his sunshine smile, eyes creasing up along with it, and you had to pretend to be interested in the shelf that held all of the albums the pair of you had accumulated over the years so he wouldn’t see the way your cheeks suddenly felt a bit hotter to the touch nor the grin that you failed to bite back.
your unfortunate crush on your roommate had been something that you were trying to actively pretend wasn’t there, but after nearly five months of trying to ignore it to no avail you decided that method wasn’t working out and had given in, accepting your fate. you were doomed to want donghyuck as far more than a friend for however long your heart could put up with it.
“yah! are you even listening?”
hyuck’s voice snapped you out of your momentary daze, and you turned back to see him brandishing an apron at you. you took it slowly, unsure of what he actually wanted you to do with it until he rolled his eyes at your confusion and gestured at himself.
“tie it for me, idiot.”
you brightened in realisation and hurried to comply, looping the strap over his neck and waiting for him to turn so you could tie the two strips of fabric hanging at his sides together. your touches were fleeting and you kept your head down, not letting yourself focus on anything other than the knot you were attempting lest you got distracted again. once it was done you looked up to find donghyuck peering at you from over his shoulder, eyes bright with an emotion you couldn’t read behind the thick black frames of his glasses. he looked lost in thought, but he shook himself out of it when you patted him on the shoulder and darted away from you, towards the fridge.
you quirked an eyebrow and was about to ask what more he could possibly want to get out before starting to make dinner when he turned around again, this time with an unopened bottle of red wine in hand. he handed that off to you as well, before starting to mess around with the settings on the stove and peeling back the plastic packaging the meat had came in.
“would you open that, too? and pour us a couple glasses. my phone’s charging by the sofa if you wanna set the music up.”
hyuck set to work with his jobs and in turn you diligently began yours. it was with a practiced rhythm that you grabbed a pair of the fancy wine glasses (a housewarming gift from jaemin) from their spot on one of the high shelves, and slipped past where your roommate was chopping vegetables to grab the bottle opener. he gave you a wide grin when you placed his glass in front of him, one that you returned fully before leaving your own on the kitchen island and wandering over to where his phone was charging.
“what’s your password?” you called over your shoulder, unplugging his phone from the cable so you could set it up nearer the speaker. his screen lit up when you disconnected the charger, and you froze when you saw that his lockscreen was none other than a picture of the two of you. it’d been taken on his birthday the year before, in the warm low lighting of the bar you’d all found yourselves in after his celebratory dinner. you had your arms around each other’s shoulders, and donghyuck had pressed his cheek to yours so hard that it had hurt a little, but he’d been so happy you couldn’t bring yourself to tell him. there was matching smiles on your faces and twin peace signs being made with your free hands, although where hyuck had added a wink you had stuck to just beaming at the camera.
you liked the picture, of course—hell, it’d been your wallpaper for a while too, until you’d hung out with jeno a while ago and decided the photo of the pair of you in matching spa robes and face masks was a suitable enough replacement—but to see donghyuck using it came as somewhat of a (pleasant) surprise. the last time you’d seen it his lockscreen had been the picture of the whole of your friendgroup crammed into a singular booth while at karaoke, after all.
“oh, it’s—“ he froze from where he was busying himself with one of the pans on the stove, eyes widening. his voice sounded quieter than usual when he replied, and his cheeks looked a little redder. “um. i’ll do it.”
you weren’t sure what made him so opposed to telling you, but you didn’t question it and handed the phone over; taking the chance to slide into one of the stools sat behind the island and take your first drink from your glass. the brightness from his screen was turned all the way up and reflected onto his glasses, and you didn’t mean to look, but the six digits he typed in to unlock his phone felt familiar.
you turned the combination over in your mind while he passed it back so you could turn some music on, and only when you had pressed play on his instructed playlist did the answer come to you. the date you met, down to the day exactly. again—you knew, and knew he did too, but what you didn’t know was that he’d use it for something like that.
you didn’t want to think too deep into it. that would only lead to things like false hope and daydreams and thoughts that the times where donghyuck looked a little far away were times when he was having exactly the same thoughts about you. instead you necked down the remnants of your wine in almost one go and shivered after you swallowed and the alcohol rushed through your system, reaching for the bottle to top yourself up. hyuck noticed your empty glass and laughed from where he was frying the meat and vegetables.
“calm down, lightweight. wouldn’t want you getting too drunk—aren’t you working tomorrow?”
you scoffed at the jab, flipping him the bird. “lightweight my ass, i could drink you under the table.”
to prove your point you took a prolonged sip from your second glass, and then shook your head in answer to his question. “we’re shut tomorrow. something about too many people being out sick.”
hyuck nodded in understanding and then went back to pouring things into the pan, stirring as he went. it sizzled from the heat and both looked and smelled almost done, and you felt your stomach ache a little in anticipation. you weren’t even all that mad about your usual tuesday night plans being derailed, now more looking forward to sitting down and enjoying a meal with donghyuck than watching rich people gossip about one another (although you had to admit that said gossip was entertaining).
the pair of you made idle chat and swapped insults at each other’s music choices while they played, draining a few more glasses of wine between you as you went, until finally hyuck was shutting off the heat and presenting you the food with a flourish, looking highly proud of himself despite how his glasses had fogged up slightly from the steam. he was setting about grabbing two pairs of chopsticks when you stopped him in his tracks.
“please tell me you weren’t actually expecting us to eat out of the pot.”
he wilted under your flat stare, and you rolled your eyes. “maybe? i just don’t want to bother you for too long with washing up afterwards. i know tuesdays are usually your designated soap opera nights.”
his logic didn’t make much sense but the reasoning behind it was sweet, and you willed yourself not to melt after hearing it, deciding not to mention that you didn’t actually mind in place of trying to keep a firm resolve despite the mirth slowly creeping into your next words.
“and yet you made me keep you company while you cooked?”
donghyuck pouted again as he was called out, setting his half-full glass down a little too carelessly to complain at you.
“i didn’t want to be lonely! i like having you around, you know? even if your music taste is..” he trailed off and pulled a disgusted face, miming throwing up, and in response you balled up the dishcloth left on the counter in your reach and threw it right between his eyes to distract him from the fact that his words had (again) made it hard for you not to do something stupid; like confess your feelings right then and there, or pull him into a kiss by the front of his apron.
“my music taste is fine, thank you very much. now help me set the table, and then we can eat.”
he gave you a mock salute and reached behind himself to fiddle with the knot you’d tied for him earlier, slipping his apron off and hanging it up before returning to your side.
you jostled each other on the way to the curlery drawer, poked more fun at the songs you had queued up to play while you ate, fought playfully over who got to pour who more wine, and then as you finally sat down together at the table you had the sudden thought that, if you got to spend more nights with hyuck like this—smiley, playful, with flushed cheeks and skin warm to the touch from the alcohol—then the worries that came with the possibility of you ruining your friendship with a few simple words could be put aside for just a little while longer.

this moment with you.
unstoppable force (opening shift) vs immovable object (sleepy boyfriend mark) !⠀⸻⠀mark lee x gnr ⠀ fluff est. rs ⠀ wc 1.4k ⠀ now playing . . ☆
생각⠀blonde mark gmfu he’s literally the love of my life
Tumblr media
the sound of your phone’s alarm had never been a particularly welcome thing, but that morning the harsh vibrations coming from where it lay face-down against the wood of the bedside table seemed to irritate you more than usual.
a flailing hand of yours reached clumsily up to grab the device, hoping you wouldn’t drop it and risk waking up the boy still currently sleeping behind you, with his arms wrapped snugly around your stomach and a leg lazily tossed over your hip. once it had been successfully stopped you flopped onto your back to stare up at the ceiling, contemplating whether you really wanted to get to your opening shift on time or if you could get away with staying in bed just a little while longer.
the sudden thought of your manager’s condescending questions about where you’d been when you finally turned up, however, was enough to put a sour look on your face and act as the incentive to make you peel back the duvet and gently extract yourself from mark’s arms.
which, as it turned out, was a decision that almost immediately was met with objections from your boyfriend. while you were busying yourself with finding clothes to wear for the day he had seemed to sense the distinct absence of you in his arms (despite the pillow you’d hastily replaced yourself with) and made a whiny noise of displeasure, catching your attention. you couldn’t help but crack a smile at how unaware he still looked of everything, hardly opening his eyes but pouting all the same, face red from the warmth you’d shared, and a mark on his cheek that looked suspiciously like the pattern on the collar of the sweater you’d worn to bed to sleep in (nights were cold in december, after all, and the heating in mark’s apartment could use some work to say the least).
“hey, sleepyhead.” you hummed, taking a few quick moments to debate with yourself over which shirt to wear. “i’m opening, so i gotta run. you’ve got your day off today, though, so why don’t you go back to sleep?”
he only groaned again in answer, and you snickered as you left him to complain into the sheets while you ducked into the en suite bathroom to wash up. when you returned you found that mark had not in fact gone back to sleep, and was instead trying to blink himself awake—the opposite of what you wanted.
“don’t want you t’go.” were his first words of the morning, voice still a touch gravelly from sleep. you tried to hold back your laughter when he only became more indignant as he continued. “i hate your job. for real.”
that made you laugh as you struggled mildly with the fiddly buttons of your shirt, seeing as your job in question was a relatively harmless convenience store gig. “coming from kpop idol mark lee himself? i don’t think i’m as bad as this whenever you’re on tour.”
a blatant lie, but you hoped it would sneak past him in his half-asleep state. you were just as bad whenever he had to leave early (or late—it seemed the idol life didn’t have much consideration for whatever their stars may be doing in the times they called on them) for schedules, and probably worse whenever he was away in different countries performing to millions.
thankfully mark didn’t notice the untruth, only huffing in annoyance before making a motion alike to grabby hands in your direction, beckoning you back over to the bed. “c’mere. please?”
“so clingy,” you teased, running a hand through his blonde hair as you complied to his wishes and sat down to tug some socks on. “what would your work husbands say about this?”
“screw my work husbands.” he mumbled, bleary eyes finally opening fully (albeit slowly) as he took the opportunity to ditch the pillow he’d been reluctantly hugging in place of you and snake his arms around your waist again. his tone melted into the whine it’d been when you’d first left the bed, fingertips curling into the fabric of your shirt and syllables dragging on when he spoke. “why d’you have to go? it’s cold without you, and my bed’s too big for just me.”
“woe is you,” you deadpanned, reaching down to gently pry his palms off of you. but before you let him go completely you pressed a quick kiss against the cold metal of the rings adorning his fingers that he’d forgotten to take off the night prior. a giddy-sounding noise bubbled out of mark at the sensation, and you bit your lip to stop a smile spreading across your face, one that would make you look so obviously in love it be would be embarrassing.
the bed creaked as you stood, and you found your eyes drifting from cabinet to cabinet, the open wardrobe to the (near overflowing) box you crammed all your jewelry into. if there was just one more thing you could add to your look, one more ring to slide onto your fingers or a last minute change change of your shirt, then maybe you could linger a little longer.
stay with mark a little longer.
you didn’t know who you were fooling with your nonchalant act, because it certainly wasn’t yourself. you wanted to crawl back into bed with him just as much as he did, wrap your arms around his waist and drink in the warm feeling of his skin and faint smell of his cologne.
a second glance at your phone told you that wouldn’t be allowed, though, so you turned to say goodbye to the boy currently led right where you’d rather be. it took less than a second to meet his gaze, finding his large brown eyes already staring up at you, cheek squished and held up by one of his palms.
it tugged at your resolve, a sudden feeling clutching at your heart so fiercely it was all you could do not to melt through the floor. what you did instead was let yourself indulge, leaning down to place a kiss on his lips instead. the curve of his grin pressed against your skin and the warmth of his hands skirting up to hold your arm as you cupped his face was a comfort, the tingling feeling it still gave you even after all the months you’d been together refusing to fade even after you pulled yourself away; far too aware of what you knew would happen if you let yourself get too caught up.
mark was still looking at you when you straightened up again, like you held the whole world in your eyes, and you poked his cheek in a weak attempt to get him to stop. your heart was going to beat itself out of its chest if he didn’t. when that didn’t work you turned to a verbal reprimanding, although your tone was anything but scolding—instead unbearably fond, mirth dripping through your every word.
“stop looking at me all gooey. i might start to think you like me, or something.”
his lips curved into a pout, the hand supporting his cheek falling back onto the mattress and words coming out muffled as he spoke half-buried in the soft pillow underneath his head.
“i do like you. i love you, actually. and you’re leaving me cold in bed.”
you rolled your eyes at his continued dramatics despite the smile on your face and your own obvious want to stay, avoiding looking back at him in place of shoving things you thought you’d need for the day in your bag because you knew one more pleading look from mark would make you give in. “and you know i love you too. i’ll be back later, baby. then we can laze around all you want, promise.”
“m’holding you to that.”
his words were interrupted by a yawn, and when you’d finally gotten all your things together and stole one last glance at your boyfriend you found him with eyes that were now struggling to stay open again, blinking slowly and remaining closed for longer each time. you huffed a laugh and opened the door with as little noise as possible so not to disturb him from slipping back into slumber, stopping before you stepped through to pull a stupid sappy smile at the sight of the thin streams of sunlight pouring in to paint mark’s sleeping body gold as his chest rose and fell with each breath.
“see you later, yeah?” were your last whispered words before you gently closed the door behind you and left your lover in peace.
you hoped he’d still be right there lazing around in the warmth of the duvet when you came back home, ready for you to collapse onto and fall right back asleep with. the only good thing about leaving at all was knowing you could come back to mark at the end of it.
