“Immense? Jayce, please.” A gentle chastisement that comes with a slight curve of her lips, a faint smile to show the scolding is not meant to be mean. “A gift, yes, but ‘immense’? Clearly you have never received a Snowdown hamper from my father.” At least she was able to carry this on her own.
She was half expecting the offer to join him, given the look on his face as he studied the basket, and the quality of his smile. Not to mention… it’s Jayce. From how they now know each other - better, so much better these days - she knows that it will be as much as her presence as it is her presents that matters to him. She had known, and so time had been cleared from her schedule. Just in case. And now here she was, with the ‘just in case’ being the ‘case in point’.
“I would hate to be a bother, if you’re in the middle of something. I’m certain you’re a busy man.” A polite refusal, as is customary, but she cants her head and doesn’t give him the chance to ask a second time. Neither of them have time for those kind of games. “But if you say so, sir. I can close my eyes if you need to throw a sheet or two over some messes.”
Her lips quirk. That was Vi’s method of preparing for company. No doubt Jayce has … slightly better methods of tidying up. Even for someone who is standing on their doorstep right this moment.
He shudders a little at the thought of the Snowdown hamper she mentions, but nods a little gratefully all the same at how she's kept her tone light, her smile gentle. Even then, it's the thought of her coming here all the way with the basket that matters. She has the strength - he does not doubt that - but the sheriff does not simply go around providing such gifts to everyone. The affection is clear and there's no need to explicitly point it out, to risk changing the delicate curve of that smile. He only needs to reciprocate.
"No, not at all. I should take a break from the work, lest the stress and fatigue get in the way at the most critical time." He almost said lest my wits crack and wander again at the worst time but remembered the implications, just managed to hold his tongue. Why bring that up, of all things? It is not even like he is in any real danger of that now, and saying so would only be jest.
- The living room is yet hospitable, in any case. If he puts his mind to it, it should not take more than a minute to clean up the worst of the messes. He will put the mini helpers to work cleaning the work messes, and attend to his personal items on his own. He's nothing if not aware of what image is expected of him, and how to put on that face at the shortest notice.
... Although. With her, he should not put on a whole facade. Just showing that he cares and has put in a genuine, sincere effort would likely be enough.
"Please come in and close your eyes on the couch, then. I will be but a brief moment."
A Tisket, A Tasket
She was the Sheriff of Piltover. A title she wore with pride, a patriotism in her blood and bones. She was a sharpshooter, a keen mind, a diplomatic force to be reckoned with, and a figurehead of the great nation that she served.
She also made cupcakes. They were legendary, though whether solely from her talent as a baker or because they were attached to her title as Sheriff, who could say?
There were two of them in the basket she carried, carefully nestled so as not to smear the icing over the other other contents of the basket. There were some homemade jams, a small bag of scones, a container of ham slices, a box of water crackers, a tin of smoked salmon, a loaf of crusty bread, even a small box containing a sample of one of her favourite teas. A carefully-curated selection of afternoon tea Or, at the very least, some snacks to tide over someone who might otherwise need to keep working.
This was not, strictly-speaking, one of the duties of the Sheriff, or even of a sheriff. It was, perhaps, something a friend could do for another. Perhaps. She was, admittedly, a little out of practice, as well as feeling markedly self-conscious as she approached the security gate.
She carefully checked the basket had not been unsettled during her walk, then tapped a finger on the bell. She did not visit homes. This would very likely be an awkward visit, and thus a short one. That... would be fine. She just needed to know he was doing alright.
A welfare check fell under the scope of her duties. Yes. Of course. But he was a friend. She hadn’t visited a friend in a while. @jayceofpiltover

In the moments that stretched out after tapping the bell, she found herself entertaining the thought that he was probably busy and she was disturbing him. She, herself, was often busy, and did not like to be disturbed. Vi was often very disturbing, and thus made the days busier because not enough was done in time each day. There were a certain level of acceptable disruptions, but they had to be short. An empty teacup, yes, a massive disruption, but as soon as it was refilled, work could continue and –
Thus. Thus. If he was busy, she could leave him with the basket and he would not be upset for the interruption. In all likelihood. Perhaps.
She is just beginning to entertain the idea of leaving the basket on the doorstep when the door opens. She hasn’t seen those eyes in a while, and certainly not with those kind of shadows.
“Jayce,” she says, less in a greeting and more in surprise, as though she wasn’t expecting him to open the door at all. But then her expression settles into that stern, focused way, and she presses her lips together as she studies him. “Good grief, when was the last time you slept?” There is some sympathy in her voice, which is soft, but the concern does take the forefront. How can she protect Piltover if the people within don’t take care of themselves? Tsk.
… but ah. That’s not why she’s here. She lifts the basket a little in her arms, the cupcakes prominent at the top, the selection of food arrayed in neat and careful alignment around and beneath them. “… I… I thought you might need this,” she says, picking over her words with care. She does not want him to feel insulted by charity. Would he feel insulted? It doesn’t seem like the Jayce she knows to be insulted, by her. But she still feels tentative about choosing her words. “Consider it a gift to get you through a few… afternoons.”
Hm. This feels… awkward.
@sheriff-caitlyn
- Ah. It's so nice to see her again.
It is silly, but the sight of her - her aristocratic grace, focused expression, and steadfast presence - fills him with warmth. He doesn't blush upon seeing her - has long gone past the age or sentiments for that - but her presence makes him feel reassured, rooted. There's a predictability in how her brows rise and her lips are pressed together that is endearing to him. Even the chastising question feels nice and caring, when the words are said. Not to say...
His eyes fall on the basket that she's carrying. Cupcakes. He spies at least two of them, but the basket looks full, so there must be other treats among the content as well. Tea, most likely. Enough food for a picnic, even. His breath catches a little at the thought of her coming to his home with such a meticulous preparation, perhaps even wishing to share the contents of the basket with him. But he'd be overthinking his own importance if he thought all of it was for the two of them. She is a caring sort deep down, after all. She's probably visiting all her friends and loved ones in town, sharing -
But wait. Her words interrupt that train of thought. Somehow - they are all for him.
... He thinks that's what she's saying, anyway.
He has to blink a few times in rapid succession in surprise, though he can't say that a part of him isn't elated to hear it.
"... Are you sure?" He asks, trying to sound appreciative but not overtly awkward - she must find this more awkward than he. "That is... an immense gift." He wonders if there's a space in his house where he can even imagine sharing tea with her at this particular moment in time. "If you don't mind though, come in! It's a bit of a mess at the moment, but we can still definitely share some tea."

It had been a long, slow day. He had been entrusted with the task of appraising a new and exuberantly expensive shipment of crystals, each of which is probably worth ten times its own weight in gold. He had gone over most of them, careful to preserve the power and appearance of the crystals themselves, noting down parameters and special properties with much meticulousness and precision. As much as his tired mind would allow him to, anyway.
... When was the last time he’d eaten a proper meal?
He blinked, then smiled a little wryly at himself. This project had a deadline. As much as he much preferred inventions to appraisals, appraisals are lucrative work, often with the promise of a nice crystal or two for himself at the end. He’d be lying to himself if he said he hadn’t been eyeing one of the smaller crystals in the collection - it’d vastly improve the performance of the Mercury Hammer, if his calculations weren’t too far off. To be able to patrol far more effectively at night, or to have the time for an extra surprise attack in the midst of battle...
- Hm.
The sound of a bell, rousing him from his reverie. That was unexpected. The house hadn’t seen any visitors for a while, and most of his acquaintances knew that he’d be far more available once the appraisals were done. The house had fallen into a bit of disarray, with books sewn about everywhere, crystals littering the work tables, and several unwashed cups in the kitchen. He himself likely did not appear very dignified either, what with the pitiful amount of sleep he had gotten over the past few days. At least he was wearing an acceptable outfit and had bothered to style his hair, though. If only...
If only the visitor had been anyone else, that would have been acceptable. But this visitor was different.
He sucked in a breath and rubbed his eyes a few times, as if believing that such a movement would magically take the dark circles away. Though a shy and somewhat nervous energy had come to pervade through him, the smile that lit up the corners of his mouth and eyes was a genuine one. Though he could not for the life of him think of something he could potentially entertain her with, he hoped the sincerity of his appreciation would at least mean something to her.
The door opened, slowly.
“... Cait?” A slightly hesitant voice, and a more hesitant pronunciation of a name. He wasn’t sure if it was the right name to say, or the right way to say it. But it felt right. So it’d have to be this way.
