I'm currently reading Female Masculinity by Jack Halberstam. It's pretty good! I enjoy reading about masculinity in terms other than maleness, but it's a lot of theory that I feel like I need to have researched before reading. A lot of references to people I don't know without a lot of explanation, so I don't know if this book is good for the layperson. I've been studying gay studies for quite a few years now and it was still quite a bit dense for me.
I found the chapter on butchness and transsexuality really interesting. It really does come down to personal preference, along with a number of other factors, on why some people with gender dysphoria go one way and why they go the other way. I find it a bit unfortunate that the only FTM experiences touched upon were relationships trans men have with women, I think there is a lot to be said about the masculinity gay trans men embody and how it presents.
I'm not done with it yet, I have two more chapters left, but these are my thoughts on the book.
