we still get immediately shoved out of our immersion in tv shows or films when The Girl find a dead body and immediately shrieks - we just don't find it realistic because we're pretty confident most people would gasp rather than shriek (i.e. sharp inhale rather than sharp exhale) and it also feels unnecessarily (and predictably) misogynistic too, as men encountering corpses almost never do the same on screen

I'm gonna make this thread longer just for the delight of recieving the noble patronage of one so esteemed as Lady Catherine de Bourgh <3

I do sort of agree, I've been enjoying a blissful period of time where I haven't thought about Gandalf even once and completely forgot he had his whole hutch to trammel some wild thing moment here, and with Gandalf supposedly being the Ultimate Last Word on things it does complicate Eowyn's positioning by the narrative. So yes you're definitely right, the despair was at least not a lie and was a full intended aspect of her narrative, I was being too pessimstic.

However what I would say is don't think Aragorn is the target of Gandalf's chastising here. Specifically he is telling Eomer that he should be more sympathetic to Eowyn's fears and frustrations. And with that being true, again, the last word anyone has on the subject is Faramir, uncontested, and he declares;

‘You desired to have the love of the Lord Aragorn. Because he was high and puissant, and you wished to have renown and glory and to be lifted far above the mean things that crawl on the earth. And as a great captain may to a young soldier he seemed to you admirable. For so he is, a lord among men, the greatest that now is. But when he gave you only understanding and pity, then you desired to have nothing, unless a brave death in battle. Look at me, Eowyn!’

It is certainly presented in the best way it could have been, with Faramir allowing Eowyn a little gender freedom and soldier-applicability, one could argue he is empathising with her (though in his usual extreme overbearing Faramir-manner). But still, the declaration here is pretty plain to me, you desired Aragorn, he rebuffed you, and then you desired nothing but death in battle. The implication is that Eowyn would have been satisfied with Aragorn's love and would have acquiesced to whatever he asked of her if he'd given it to her. So as usual with Tolkien, he's trying to grapple with something somewhat outside of his sphere, something a little transgressive, and he's attempting to do it with some nuance. But the underlying assumptions remain the same, everything still must fit into his worldview in the end.

I prefer the book versions precisely because I like them to be worse <3 so it's an understandable opinion. And generally because the world makes more sense when seen through the lense of all the original characterisations. But I mean, don't speak too soon about film!faramir's relationship with Eowyn, they barely say a word to each other and the houses of healing scene is silent, they still could all have been patronising asses to her then too! Especially considering PJ's goddamn 'she's bad at soup 😔' addition. NEVER underestimate the abiility for men in lotr to be patronising to Eowyn!

As for Eowyn/Boromir 🤔for me the fact that Boromir was an adult and Eowyn was a child when they first met puts me off a bit, the age gap is even more extreme than her and Faramir's, but I have to say the idea of Eowyn divorcing his brother, vanishing into the night, then returning a few years later fully transed to woo Boromir does actually kind of slap like ultimate tormented Tboy swag going on there. And I am just deeply attached to Faramir being divorced.

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

The letter he sends to Michael in 1941 full of advice about relationships with women is generally the source I go too whenever I have these questions. Although, as I've always said, we don't really need to worry about what Tolkien's thinking anymore in regards to what his books 'mean', they should speak for themselves. But either way, we still might as well hear what he has to say about his own beliefs, like;

In this fallen world the 'friendship' that should be possible between all human beings, is virtually impossible between man and woman.

The sexual impulse makes women (naturally when unspoiled more unselfish) very sympathetic and understanding, or specially desirous of being so (or seeming so), and very ready to enter into all the interests, as far as they can, from ties to religion, of the young man they are attracted to. No intent necessarily to deceive: sheer instinct: the servient, helpmeet instinct, generously warmed by desire and young blood. Under this impulse they can in fact often achieve very remarkable insight and understanding, even of things otherwise outside their natural range: for it is their gift to be receptive, stimulated, fertilized (in many other matters than the physical) by the male. Every teacher knows that. How quickly an intelligent woman can be taught, grasp his ideas, see his point – and how (with rare exceptions) they can go no further, when they leave his hand, or when they cease to take a personal interest in him.

You may meet in life (as in literature* ) women who are flighty, or even plain wanton — I don't refer to mere flirtatiousness, the sparring practice for the real combat, but to women who are too silly to take even love seriously, or are actually so depraved as to enjoy 'conquests', or even enjoy the giving of pain – but these are abnormalities, even though false teaching, bad upbringing, and corrupt fashions may encourage them. The letter itself is actually pretty interesting and I've cut out only the clearest misogyny sections but it goes into his opinions in far more detail. I kind of enjoy reading it, it gives this nuanced examination of precisely how at least A man of the time and with such misogynistic views percieves the women around him and his relationship with them without any like... hold back or sense of trying to defend himself. So it comes across with a lot more candour and so within that a kind of less clinical more understandable tone, like I can get how a human man might believe these things.

But with that being said, I don't think there's really a mystery to solve here right? Aragorn tells everyone including the reader what Eowyn's deal was over her sickbed in Minas Tirith. We are actually meant to percieve Eowyn as lying when she explains her desires and motives in this scene, her true secret object was always to follow Aragorn (whom she fancies herself in love with), and in being rebuffed by him she is sent into literal suicidal despair. Like I am fairly convinced that was Tolkien's entire intent. I ignore it with prejudice, I will never ever be convinced that is what this Eowyn's story is about, but I still think that's what Tolkien believed he wrote. Even Faramir declares this to be the case by the end, to Eowyn's face, during their so called love confesssion, and she does not correct him. It's truly grim honestly, Eowyn should get a divorce and change her pronouns.
