So. li lianhua's final letter to di feisheng and fang duobing at the end of the series is essentially the ancient chinese equivalent to BREAKING UP OVER TEXT, right?
"You're awesome, but it's me, not you."
and
"My dick don't work so good no more, but if you like, you can check out my hot young disciple - with a bit of practice, he'll be better than me, achshully. He can give it to you like u need. xoxo much respect."
*proceeds to ghost everyone*
Did I get that right?
Yeah I'd chase his ass down for months after too. Just to murder him

I just finished "The Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton. It belongs to the (large) category of books that have been in my bookshelf for years because I never got around to read them out of some misgiving about their entertainment value. Like many of the books belonging to this category, it turns out it is a masterpiece! I enjoyed it much more that I thought I would.
I really enjoyed the depiction of this period and of the social politics that dominated and ruled the New York of that time. It creates such a brutal, cold and superficial world that everyone both submits to and maintain. However, the highlight for me were the three central characters:
Newland Archer is a character that I didn't like as a person, but that I found utterly fascinating as a character. He sees the failings and the superficially of the world he is part of and wants to rebel, but at the same time he does not have the resolution and strength to actually do any meaningful rebellion. While his love for Ellen was somewhat touching, I am really convinced that he saw her more as an ideal of the romance and escapism he wishes he had than as an actual person. The conclusion of his character was tragic, but perfectly in line with how he has been depicted so far. What really caught my attention however was his arrogance, especially when directed towards people he sees as inferior. From the very first time he is introduced he speaks of "freeing" his future wife, May, from the ideals she has been taught. He never considers whether she might actually been interested in arts or literature, or interests himself in what she actually likes. He just assumes she is a product of the society that raised her and even when she proves she is much more than an innocent ingenue, he never quite makes the effort to see her as a real person.
Ellen Olenska was a brilliant character. Running from an abusive marriage, she hopes to find a stable life in New York society, and slowly realizes the cruelty and rigidity of that world. Her story was tragic, and the way she is completely misunderstood and criticized by society and her own family really shows the cruelty women of that time faced when they tried to rebel against convention. However, what Archer Newland couldn't accomplish (even though he had more ressources than her), she actually accomplishes, and finds some semblance of freedom in Paris. I really hope that once she left New York, she had a great and fulfilling life and (hopefully) some romantic affairs with men (or women) that had more character and resolution than Archer.
And finally, my dearest and my favorite character of the novel, May Welland! I didn't expect to like her character as much as I did. She really shows how women of that time, however conventional or "boring" they might seem, managed to get what they wanted through manipulation and the usage of social politics. May gave one chance to Archer Newland to get what he really wanted, and when he blew it, she was like "Well I gave you one shot and you didn't take it, now you are going to face your responsibilities!". She had such a pragmatic attitude towards her husband and his affair, and I can admire that. I really wish she had the chance to find who she truly was beyond the conventions and values she had been taught, but I am glad that she managed to get some form of happiness or at least contentment in her life.

You know what's so funny to me...
Cause canonically Fang Doubing is definitely bitchier(affectionate) than both Li Lianhua and Di Feisheng but he goes under the radar because of his big brown eyes and pout.
Like Li Lianhua is chill or just vanishes from situations if he doesn't like it.
Di Feisheng will maybe glare or punch the other unconscious.
Fang Duobing??? A whole fit, he huffs and puffs and whines and complains and loudly talks shit, even to their faces.
Young prince has zero self control and if he thinks poorly of you, you will know it. He will make sure you know it.
But then he juts out his bottom lip, makes it quiver while flashing them big brown eyes and like what are you supposed to do?
Exactly.

Far from me the idea that I could tell Li Lianhua how to fake his death and maintain a fake identity, after all I certainly didn't defeat a huge beast at 15 and founded my own sect at 20, but I would say that it is rather common sense, when you hide your true identity, to CHANGE YOUR DAMN SURNAME! I know the jianghu is big and Li isn't that uncommon a name, but there is stil a risk! What was even his logic here!

is li lianhua and fang duobing's meet-cute not a fantastic twist on the hero-saves-beauty trope, where instead, the beauty sets up the hero to save them?
Tumblr media
llh's smile here has both the satisfaction of knowing he has found his way out of this tricky situation and the amusement that this upright young hero sitting unsuspectingly across from him whom he is about to lead into his scheme isn't exactly an innocent face either, carrying around someone else's detective badge from his sigu sect's remaining baichuan court as his own. (🦊🦊)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the blocking in this show particularly in how they present fanghua is just fascinating and has very recognizable classic notes. llh's hand slaps firmly onto fdb's table, and fdb takes llh's arm in equal in the very next beat.
we'll come to realize, this is representative of their dynamic. fdb is not a thoughtless fool chasing after someone unattainable who doesn't want him around. it's llh giving him that first opportunity to step into his life. fdb boldly takes llh's cue in stride and pulls him to safety, the first of many to come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
llh tilting his body to get a better view of the fight is just so cute, like, "wait i want to see what he's doing." 😂 llh is actually interested in seeing what this young hero can do.

the unsuspecting "weak" beauty stands in the sidelines but is actually evaluating their hero's every move and is the one behind it all. 🤭

Normal managers when they need to get a group of people to work together : organize team bonding activities, no one cares, evertone is miserable and wants to leave, no actual bonding is done.
That one old guy in Mysterious Lotus Casebook: Fucking poisons everyone and tell them to do as he says or they will all die. Everyone immediately falls into line and start being productive.
I am not quite sure what the morality is here. All I have to say is that efficient managerial skills are apparently not quite compatible with respect for human life.

Today I finally accomplished a plan that was on the backburner for two years and rode my bike to work. It is about one hour one-way (about the time it takes when I take the train). Was it necessary? Not really! Does my ass hurt? Like hell! Am I exhausted? You bet I am!
Am I proud of myself for doing it? Absolutely!
And special shout out to my father and brother who saw me prepare myself for the ride this morning and only teased me ("We are going to have to look for you at the hospital!" "You didn't train, you'll be exhausted in fifteen minutes!" "You haven't rode your bike in ten years!") It really is pleasant when I can prove them wrong and get them to shut up.

Mysterious Lotus Casebook - First Impressions
I have finished the first five episodes of Mysterious Lotus Casebook and so far, I have really enjoyed it. The mysteries are entertaining and challenging enough for the protagonists to appear smart where they solve them, while still being credible. Li Lianhua is a really interesting protagonist and has won my heart, while Fang Duobing is perfect in his role of "wide eyed male ingenue who really wants to be a detective". I think the drama did a good job and showing his skills while still insisting on the fact that he is still very naive and lacks experience. His interactions with Li Lianhua are absolutely perfect, and the actors have good chemistry.
Speaking of Li Lianhua, I absolutely love his character. Generally, the "extremely skilled and clever protagonist with a I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude and a tragic backstory" type is one that really works on me, and Li Lianhua is no exceptions. I really look forward to seeing more of him.
As for Di Feisheng, I have seen little of him so far but I appreciate the way his character has been set up. From the vague spoilers I have seen, it appears he will join our dynamic duo in their investigations, which is bound to create some really fun interactions.
Before I end, I would like to give a shout-out to the mystery in episodes 3 to 5. I had little hopes at the beginning as to its quality but the resolution was just perfect in the most soap-opera kind of way. I feel terrible for the victim in this case.
In conclusion, it seems that this will be the drama to get me out of my drama-watching slump. I hope it will remain good until the end.

[ID: gifs from the second episode of the series "Mysterious Lotus Casebook." Li Lianhua says, "I didn't know Li Xiangyi had a disciple like you." Fang Duobing says drunkenly, "No one knows about it." Li Lianhua smiles and says, "I bet. I guess he doesn't know about it either." /end ID]

RITSU ACTUALLY CONFESSED TO TAKANO!!!!!!!
I never thought I would see that day. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi has been my first BL manga and despite its issues, it has kept a special place in my heart. I started reading it when I was fifteen. I am now twenty five! I have waited for ten years and it is finally there!

made this poll because i think sometimes the fandom forgets zhao yunlan is as much deranged and obsessed about shen wei as shen wei is about him. the feelings are very mutual!
but this is in no way the sum of his character. he's also a very sweet and devoted lover, and there's also a LOT of characterization in the novel that goes beyond his relationship to shen wei. his insecurities, his sense of alienation, his depression and the way he overcomes it, his protective tendencies, his absolutely otherworldly instincts and cunning, his resourcefulness, his ability to empathize and forgive... i highly recommend reading the novel, it's both very fun (as you can probably see from this poll) but also so so so tragic and heart wrenching
read guardian or else! 👁️👁️🔪
