Author’s Note: This one has been a few months in the making. Life definitely got in the way, in ways I didn’t imagine it would. It feels good to be back though. Catch up with Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Part V here before checking out Part VI!
************************************************************************
You felt time freeze in that moment. Who was going to ruin all of this and wake you up from this dream? Chris stood there just smiling at you.
“Yes, the very Y/n from the book that you read on the video! We had some discussions, and felt that she was the best fit for this project. Scott did remind us that you did specifically love the drawings from that book.”
Still staring into your eyes and holding your hand, Chris responded to Evelyn.
“Yes, this is true. By the way…it is so nice to meet you Y/n!” He had the biggest grin on his face, looking as if he wanted to laugh at the fact that you were standing in front of him. He was in shock, just as much as you were. As for Scott, well he is feeling pretty proud of himself. He wasn’t going to let this little secret out anytime soon.
“It is very nice to meet you as well Chris. Thank you for selecting our publishing firm to help bring your book to life.”
“Well, it’s not just my book. My brother Scott is a part of the writing adventure too.” Chris directed your attention over to the other side of the table.
“How rude of me not to introduce myself. Thank you Chris for the introduction.” Scott stood up from the table and eagerly walked over to greet you not just with a handshake, but with a quick hug.
“It’s very nice to meet you as well Scott!”
You were taken aback. Usually hugs weren’t a traditional way of greeting clients, but his friendly demeanor was welcome. If his hugs were a slight indication of what one from Chris would be like, you looked forward to experiencing it. Chris followed behind Scott, as he returned to the other side of the table, taking a seat across from you. You couldn’t bring yourself to look over at Chris, knowing that you would be distracted. You knew that his eyes would stop the world around you, let alone cause you to fumble over your words. Thankfully Evelyn was taking the lead on this meeting. You were there just to hear the ideas, figure out a timeline to complete this project, and see what Evelyn has in store for you.
“First off, thank you Scott for reaching out to us with the idea of writing this children’s book. When we saw your video explode on social media, I don’t think we ever imagined that this project would happen. I was excited to get your call.”
“Well we need to thank you in return Evelyn, and your team, for being willing to meet with us so quickly to get the ball rolling. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for us to work on this book and I know that we have lots of ideas to comb through. Hopefully we won’t be too much of a pain!”
Everyone around the table had a good laugh at Scott’s comment. You couldn’t help but look up at Chris at that moment as you heard his laugh. A smile grew on his face as your eyes met.
“I don’t want to speak for Chris, but I know this was something that I have always wanted to do. This is a memory that we can make together as brothers.”
“I have to agree with Scott. There is a lot of work ahead of us and I know the both of us are keen on getting this done. I just have one question.”
“I will try my best to answer.” Of course Evelyn would have an answer for Chris. She was the ultimate decision maker who wanted to please her clients. This was not that time to disappoint anyone.
“Is it possible to incorporate a charity component to the sales of this book?”
Of course he asked such a question. It melted your heart. You heard that he was a kind heart guy, and now you believe it from the one simple request he made.
“We sure can. You just let us know who you would like the proceeds to go to, and we will do the rest for you!”
“Thank you Evelyn. That was the most important part to me, to really seal the deal. Scott and I will have some discussion about who we would like to work with. I have a few ideas already, but I want the both of us to be on the same page.”
“I agree with Chris. So how do we move forward, Evelyn?”
“Ultimately, we will work with your schedule.”
“Alright! I know that we probably have to work out some kind of timeline for this to be completed. I have already checked with my agent and my schedule is clear for at least the next three to four weeks. Obviously we have never done this before. Does that seem like a reasonable amount of time?”
“We will work with your schedule. Knowing that you are free for the next few weeks Chris, we will start the project right away. Luckily, we have planned for Y/N to be in town for the duration of the project, so she will be available throughout the process.”
“Oh, you don’t live in Manhattan Y/N?” Even though Scott knew exactly where you live, he wanted to sound a little clueless and curious.
“As much as Manhattan feels like home to me now, Vancouver is my hometown. The team has welcomed me with open arms and Evelyn has been kind enough to set up an office for me here for the duration of my stay.”
“That’s great. Who knows, maybe this city will become your home one day. I hope it’s not all work and no play for you the duration of this trip though. By the way, we are excited that you agreed to come on board with this project, right Chris?” Scott nudged Chris out of a daze that you clearly could see and sense from across the table.
“Oh…yes! I…I mean we are excited to be working with you. Hopefully Scott doesn’t drive you crazy.”
“Hey!!!” Scott punched Chris is the arm.
The grin on your face grew as you watched these brothers being typical brothers. You could see their bond was strong. It reminded you of your relationship with your brother. Gone are the days when you would beat up on each other. You couldn’t help but think of what your brother’s reaction would be if he found out what was happening right now.
“So how about we kick things off tomorrow? Y/N you can meet with Scott and Chris for your initial creative session. I have booked out this conference room for the remainder of the week, so the three of you can start brainstorming. And I will have the contract to you two later today” Your head was spinning as Evelyn proposed the start of the project. You were not prepared to spend every moment with Chris so sudden. Really this was the ideal situation. How was this even possible?
“This sounds great! We will be here at 9am. We will bring the breakfast.” Scott was enthusiastic about the start of this project, but he looked forward to the moment they left the building as he knew his brother was about to burst at the seams. “We thank you again Evelyn. And Y/N, we will see you tomorrow morning. I warn you now; I don’t know how much a morning person my brother is.”
“I will make sure there is lots of coffee to fuel us, most specifically Chris.”
You found it hard to believe that Chris wasn’t a morning person, considering the early hour that you met him in the park. Who were you to argue with Scott though, as you didn’t want Evelyn to find out about the chance encounter that Chris and you had just a week prior. Everyone stood up and made their way from the table towards the door. Secretly you didn’t want him to leave. You tried to think of something that would stop him and encourage him to stay just a little longer.
“Wait! I should give you both my business card. If you happen to be running late, just let me know!” You handed a card to both Scott and Chris. In your mind, you hoped that Chris would use this as a way to reach out to you, not just for business reasons.
“Good thinking. Thank you Y/N. We will see you tomorrow morning.” Chris’ hand touched yours again as you handed the card over to him, causing the sparks to fly. You brought yourself to look him in the eyes, even though you were intimidated by the smile he still had. He made you smile.
You watched them walk away as the chatter from behind you grew. Just as you turned to return to your spot in the conference room, you see Chris as the end of the hallway turn to see if you were still there. You smiled and lazily waved bye to him. You instantly felt stupid for waving as you wondered how stupid you looked doing it.
************************************************************************
The day flew by and exhaustion set in as you arrived back at your hotel room. After being in meetings with Evelyn all day, you couldn’t wait to tell Haley about what happened. It was the perfect evening to grab take out from the deli around the corner from the hotel, for dinner in bed. You crawled into bed, with the buffet laid out in front of you as you quickly dialed Haley, hoping that she would answer. You needed to process the day, as it still seemed like a dream.
“Why aren’t you out on the town right now?”
“I am not in any state to be out and about tonight?”
“Rough day?” Haley knew exactly what happened today, thanks to the play by play from Scott. She was hoping that you would have told her you were getting ready for some fancy date with Chris, but played dumb by asking if you about your day.
“No? I don’t think I can classify it as that. You are never going to believe what I am about to tell you.”
“Oh?”
“Chris. He is my new client.”
“As in THE Chris?” Good thing Haley could cover up the sarcastic tone in her voice with enthusiasm and shock. She was a really good actress.
“Yes that Chris. Hales, it was so hard to sit across the table from him. I am slated to work with him for the next three to four weeks.”
“This is a dream come true, isn’t it?”
“Yes and no. I don’t know how to deal with this Hales. He is within reach and I am acting like a stupid teenager.”
“Just be yourself Y/N. He is probably in just as much shock as you. I can only imagine that he is sitting in his home or hotel room trying to process everything with his brother.”
“You are right. Wait…..how do you know that his brother is with him?”
Haley needed to cover up the knowledge she had, as Scott has just texted her prior to you calling.
“I follow Scott on Instagram. He posted about being in the city, so I made the assumption that they are hanging out together.”
“Yah, they are both my client. Chris is writing the children’s book with Scott.”
“That will be so much fun! Maybe Scott will make it easier to hang out around Chris. He can lessen the tension between you and Chris.” As Haley continued talking to you, she texted Scott asking him to help you out tomorrow, because she knew you were going to be a nervous wreck.
So, Y/N is going to be a nervous wreck tomorrow. Can you work your magic and ease things a little?
************************************************************************
Chris paced back and forth in the hotel room, scratching at his facial hair. He did this when he was nervous or unsure of things he could not control. His afternoon was occupied with production meetings, which kept his mind from constantly thinking about you. Yet there he was, thinking about you. Scott had just returned from getting take out for the both of them.
“Have you worn out the carpet yet?”
Chris stopped to actually look down to the carpet, wondering if he actually did wear things down.
“Nope, not yet! You realize I am not going to sleep tonight. She has been on my mind all week, and now she is within reach and I don’t know what to do. I feel like a stupid middle school boy that doesn’t know how to talk to his crush!”
“When was the last time you felt like this?”
“Honestly, I don’t think I have ever felt like this.”
“Just be yourself then.”
“But what if she doesn’t reciprocate the feelings that I am having?”
“Just take a chance. I have a good feeling about this.” Just then Scott received a text. Looking at his phone, it was Haley. The two of them hadn’t stopped conversing since the meeting this morning. To distract Chris from the texting, Scott quickly unpacked all the food from the paper bags. “Here, let’s get some food into you.” As he motioned Chris to come get food, he pulled out his phone to read the message from Haley.
So, Y/N is going to be a nervous wreck tomorrow. Can you work your magic and ease things a little?
Scott responded quickly.
I will try my best. Chris is a wreck already. He is worried that Y/N won’t have the same feelings for him. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. It could be an interesting day. Ps. How the heck are we going to keep this secret up?
************************************************************************
You laid in the massive king size bed, staring at the ceiling. It was shortly after 1:00am and you had given up on the idea that you would get any sleep. You learned to sleep with your phone on the other side of the room, so you couldn’t press snooze on the alarm. As you struggled to sleep, you needed something mindless to help pass the time, and hopefully help you fall into a deep slumber. You crawled out of bed to grab your phone from the desk. You had a couple of notifications for work emails and social media updates from your friends. There was also a text from a number that didn’t look familiar. Unsure of who this text was from, you click to open and read it.
I saw the weather for tomorrow. You might need an umbrella :)
Your heart skipped a beat. The time stamp indicated that he had texted 20 minutes earlier. Clearly Chris was having troubles sleeping as well. You wanted so badly to text him back, but knew that you should keep things professional. You read the text over and over again, like it was the first time you were reading it. You loved that he referenced the first time he met you. You also loved that he was looking out for you.
You typed out a few words in response, but deleted them as quickly as they filled the screen.
It must have been his words that calmed your nerves, as your eyes got heavy reading his message a hundred times over. You eye lids became heavy and the phone fell from your hand onto the pillow beside you.
************************************************************************
Though the hours of sleep were short, you felt energized for the day. You took extra time prepping as you woke before your alarm went off. You were making sure that you were feeling confident and cute. With Chris’ recommendation running through your mind all morning, you looked out the window and saw that rain started to fall. You brought the umbrella that he had given you, on the rare chance that you would run into him and give it back. You didn’t want to give it back though. You saw this as a memento from the day you met him. You checked the time on your phone to make sure that you were still on time. His text from the night before almost haunted you. Now was maybe the time to text him back.
Thanks for the heads up. Does this mean I need to return it to you? See you soon! Ps. How much coffee will you require this morning? ;)
With that response, it was probably about that time that you should head out to make that coffee that you promised. As you ran out the door with the umbrella in hand, you gave yourself one last once over in the mirror to make sure that you were looking as good as you were feeling.
“Guess what Y/n, this is no longer a dream. You got this.”
************************************************************************
Chris admittedly was not typically a morning person. Today was a different day. He was up before his alarm went off. He had finished up all his emails before Scott even woke up. His thoughts of Y/N did this to him. He was anticipating the moment he would get to see her again. He also had to make a conscience effort not to check his phone every two minutes to see if she has responded to his message from the night before. For a moment he had second guessed himself and even sending a message at all, especially that late at night.
Noticing that his brother was still sound asleep, he grabbed a pillow from his bed and flung it at his head, in hopes that it would startle him awake.
“Get up! We are going to be late!” Chris lied in that moment just to see what Scott’s reaction would be.
“Lies. My alarm hasn’t gone off yet. Now f*** off.”
“Good morning to you too. To let enjoy your beauty sleep, I will go and pick up the breakfast we promised to take to the office.”
“Okamph donmmph forgmph frugmph.” Scott’s response was muffled by the pillows that he covered his head with, in anger that his brother thought it was a good idea to wake him up.
“Ahhh, yes. I completely understood that. See you at the office.”
Chris had some eagerness in his step, as he grabbed his messenger bag and ran out the door to catch the elevator. He anticipated seeing Y/N, so much so that there seemed to be a permanent smile on his face. As the door slide open on the elevator to welcome him on, a young family with two small boys stared at him as their jaws dropped open.
“Good morning crew!” As he entered the elevator he approached the young boys and gave them both a high five. He was even beginning to question his own enthusiasm first thing in the morning. As they arrived to the lobby, the younger of the two boys used great confidence to ask Chris for a photo. This kid pulled at his heart strings that he couldn’t resist being able to fulfill such a request. Just as the three of them got into place to take the photo, Chris looked up to see a woman walking through the lobby, clearly on a mission to get somewhere. His heart stopped for a moment and he tried to remain focused on taking this photo. He was pretty sure that it was Y/N heading out the revolving door. He wanted to chase after her, but did want to break the hearts of the boys. As they finished up the photo and went on their way, Chris was quick to run out the lobby to see if he could see Y/N. She was nowhere to be seen, especially in the sea of umbrellas covering the people rushing off to work.
“Why did I have to have a black umbrella?” He stood there staring down the sea of black umbrellas, with a bit of disappointment. As everyone rushed by him on the sidewalk, Chris grabbed his phone to see that he missed a text from her.
Thanks for the heads up. Does this mean I need to return it to you? See you soon! Ps. How much coffee will you require this morning? ;)
Of course his smile grew when he read her response.
Keep it! It’s my gift to you. Too bad I didn’t buy a replacement though...I might need a towel along with a very large cup of coffee when I get to the office. See you soon!
As he pressed send on his response, the rain suddenly started to come down a little heavier. In that moment though, he didn’t mind one bit. A little bit of rain wasn’t going to ruin his day.

You sat in the back of the town car as it slowly pulled up to the front door of the Park Central Hotel. After a long day of travel, you were glad to finally make it to your final destination. Upon realization of where you were staying, things slowly started kicking in that this wasn’t a dream, but this hotel was one place that you only dreamed of staying at. There were plenty of times in the past that you walked past this place, hoping to see someone famous walk out of the rotating doors, looking glamorous. You didn’t know that this would be your home for the next week, but you certainly weren’t going to complain. As you admired the hotel from the car window, the door quickly opened and a hand outstretched to help you exit the vehicle.
“We are here, Miss Y/L/N.”
“Thank you Charles.”
As you took his hand for assistance, you couldn’t help but wonder if this is what it what it always felt like for those who had personal drivers. You stood on the side walk, looking to your right. There was a clear view of Central Park. You were instantly taken back to the moment you met Chris. It seemed like months had passed since it happened, but really it was just a little over a week since that fateful morning. You were in enough of a daze that you didn’t even realize you stood in the middle of the busy sidewalk, filled with people who were rushing off to work.
“Miss Y/L/N, is everything okay?”
Thankfully Charles brought you back to reality, before some angry passerby would throw garbage at you, because you slowed down their perfectly timed out walking pace to get into the office at the exact moment the needed to be there.
“Oh, yes Charles. Everything is fine. I am just happy to be back. Thank you for your services this morning.”
“You’re welcome Miss. Now, should we go inside before you get run over?”
You smiled as he directed you towards the revolving door where you are greeted by a friendly smile.
“Welcome to the Park Central Hotel. You must be Miss Y/L/N. We have been awaiting your arrival. We hope you enjoy your stay with us.”
************************************************************************
The drive into the city went quick for Chris and Scott. It gave them time to bounce some story ideas off of each other. It also gave them a chance to relive moments from their childhood, by blasting songs on the radio and singing along. They even had a good laugh when they realized they were singing some of the lyrics wrong. They loved being able to spend time like this with each other. In their adult life, they were always going in opposite directions, so when they had the chance to get out on the open road and make more memories together, they embraced it.
Chris navigated his way through Manhattan, as they encountered the end of the day rush hour. They found themselves at a standstill on West 59th Street. This street bordered the south end of Central Park, near the very spot along the pathway that Chris met Y/n on. It was the first time on the entire drive, that Chris had gone silent. He was reliving that morning again in his mind. Oddly enough, he even looked for Y/n, as if she was actually going to be there.
“Earth to Chris…the car in front of you is moving. Are you going to go?”
Vehicles behind him started honking their horns, encouraging him in a not so polite way to get going. He shook his head as he lightly pressed on the gas.
“Is everything okay? It’s like you spaced out for a moment”
“It’s because I did. All the memories of meeting Y/n started flooding back. I caught a glimpse of the spot where we met. A part of me wished that by chance when I looked over to the spot that she would be standing there, waiting for me.”
Scott patted him on the shoulder, consoling him for the wish that was unfulfilled in the moment. He felt bad for his brother, but he was really good at containing his excitement for what he knew was going to happen the next morning.
“Well, it doesn’t hurt to have that kind of wish cross your mind. She must have been something special if you are still feeling this way about her Chris. There is nothing wrong with that.”
“You’re right. Now let’s focus on this meeting tomorrow, and maybe we can have a little fun when we are here. I don’t need to be back in Boston for a couple of days.”
“I like you’re thinking. I see that we are just about to arrive at the hotel. How about we drop our things off, freshen up, and go out for beer and food?”
“I can get behind that idea.”
As they pulled up to the front door of the hotel, Chris felt a sense of calm as he stepped out of the vehicle, putting his sunglasses on and turning his cap on the right way. He looked at the hotel and then looked to the right, where he could see Central Park. He smiled. In this moment he caused a bit of commotion with the passersby. Cellphone cameras snapped photos of him smiling. With not much in hand except a duffel bag, he quickly made his way to the entrance to pass off his keys to the valet and give a final wave to the few people who stood there in shock that they just saw him.
“Welcome to the Park Central Hotel, Mr. Evans. We have been awaiting your arrival. We hope you enjoy your stay with us”
************************************************************************
You despised the early hours you kept seeing on the bedside table clock. It started at 5am, an hour that you really weren’t too familiar with. You hadn’t slept much the entire night. Luckily you had a couple more hours to try and catch up on the sleep time you missed. It wasn’t happening though. It seemed as if you saw every ten minutes pass by. You blamed it on a good blend of nervous energy and excitement. Leading up to your actual alarm going off, you made notes and questions on the hotel stationary to often goes unused. There were plenty of questions you figured you wanted to ask, even though you were going into this meeting without any prior knowledge of what the project entailed.
As 7 am finally arrived, you looked at your phone. Apparently you were not the only one that was up early. Evelyn had texted you at 5:30am to apologize that she couldn’t have breakfast with you as she promised, but would meet you at the front door of headquarters at 8:30am to give you a tour and show you your office for the week. Her cancellation of breakfast was welcomed news as you just wanted to take your time getting ready. Before starting your morning routine, a quick call to room service for the delivery of a hearty breakfast and a giant  cup of coffee was just what you needed to feel like a human again. As you hung up the phone from placing the order, you stood in front of an illuminated mirror. You examined every line and spot on your face. You couldn’t help but smile.
“Alright, Y/n. Today is the day that you have dreamed about. You don’t have to underestimate your abilities anymore. Enjoy the moment and don’t forget to wow them.”
************************************************************************
“I hope you don’t need much time to get ready?”
Scott was already dressed and ready to go as Chris just turned over for the first time, smelling the coffee that his brother placed on the bedside table.
“When do we need to leave?”
“Well, we should be somewhat early…so how about you just get up and get ready. I got breakfast and coffee for you. Other than that, it’s all up to you and us arriving to the meeting on time.”
“Alright, alright. I’ll get up! Next time, maybe we shouldn’t stay out late the night before an important meeting.”
“May I remind you, it’s because you are getting old.”
Hiding his head underneath the pillow, Chris was awake enough to give his brother the finger.
*********************************************************************
“Welcome Y/n!!!”
Evelyn greeted you at the door, just like she said she would. You arrived not one minute early or late. You wanted to demonstrate your punctuality, without being too eager on your first day at headquarters. Evelyn was genuinely excited to see you this morning, as she gave you a hug instead of shaking your hand. It felt a little odd to see her in person, as you were used to meeting with her over video conferencing.
“It is so great to be here Evelyn”
“I apologize again for missing breakfast with you this morning, but I had an urgent meeting come up with our office in London. Are you ready to see what it is like here at headquarters?”
You already knew that you would like this place a whole lot more than your office back in Vancouver. There was something about the overall atmosphere at headquarters. Even though you had only walk through the lobby of the building so far, creativity filled the space. As planned, Evelyn took you on a tour, introducing you to all the people you really needed to know while you were there. She even introduced you to some of the illustrators you admired for years. They welcomed you with words of admiration for your work. What a surreal moment. The two of you then reached your final stop before the meeting; your office.
“Now, if we need you here in Manhattan more often, I promise that your office will be a lot more nice than this.”
Evelyn said this as she slowly opened the door into the space. Your jaw dropped. What was Evelyn talking about? The first thing that caught your eye was the floor to ceiling windows that lined one side of your office. The view was out towards Midtown Manhattan. You hadn’t really realized how far up in floors you went in the elevator, as you were caught up in conversation with Evelyn and her associates. You must have been on at least the 20th floor, maybe even more. You slowly walked into the office, letting you fingers trace the edge of the glass top desk and the all the supplies you needed to work on preliminary drawings, before transferring them to digital formatting.
“Evelyn, this is unbelievable. This is more than I would have ever imagined my office to be. Thank you.”
“I really hope it will suffice. If there is anything that you are missing, let Amy your office assistant know. She will be able to help you out. We have about 10 minutes before our meeting in the conference room at the end of the hall. I will leave you to it for a bit. I’m going to go and see if our clients are here yet, to escort them to the conference room.”
“Thank you again Evelyn. I will see you shortly.”
Evelyn exited the room and closed the door behind her. You stood there in shock. This was your life now. Well, it was for the week at least. You quickly grabbed your phone to take pictures to send to your family and Haley. Not even a minute later, Haley video called you.
“Hi Hales! I hope you don’t mind, but I can’t talk long.”
“It’s okay, I have to get ready for work anyway. I just wanted to say hi and that I love your new office. Does it seem a little surreal?”
“It sure does. I think I am in shock right now.”
“Are you about to head into your big meeting?”
“I am. Good news though, I am not nervous!”
“Oh good. So I’m thinking you don’t know who you are meeting with yet?”
“Sure don’t. Evelyn didn’t even talk about the meeting this morning. She must be feeling pretty confident about it and my ability to just go with the flow.”
“Well, I’m sure you will have a great meeting. Make sure you call or text me after it, okay?”
“I will! Love ya Hales!”
It was finally time to make your way to the boardroom. You placed your personal things away in the closet and grabbed a pen, paper, and sketchbook off your new desk and reached for the door handle. Before opening the door, you took a deep breath.
“You got this Y/n. You. Got. This.”
************************************************************************
You sat beside Evelyn’s associates who were having their own conversation about other projects. You sat there trying to contain the nervous twitch you had in one leg, as you doodled on the sketchpad. You couldn’t sit still. Nerves finally kicked in, as you could hear Evelyn in the hallway chatting. There was laughter coming from their conversation. The laughter was calming, ultimately giving you the vibe that this client was going to be fun to work with. Staring out the window as your back was to the hallway door, you kept analyzing the voices and the banter they were having. You couldn’t make out what they were talking about, but they sure were taking their time to get to the boardroom. It’s as if they needed to stop every few steps. Was there something out there that you missed seeing because you were so focused on getting to the meeting and not being late?
Just then the door slowly opened. Not sure what to do, you quickly stood up like the associates did, with you head hanging down, hoping you could hide your nerves. How were you to greet this client? Was Evelyn going to introduce you, or was that up to you to be confident? You reminded yourself to do the most important thing you have learned through life, and that was to smile. Maybe following the lead of the associates was also a good idea, as they were used to this interaction. It sure seemed strange at how they clamored together though. You could see the top of someone’s head, peak into the board room.
“Sorry for the delay, everyone. He always wants to make sure that no one feels left out.”
Sure enough the associates laughed, and some giggled like little kids, after this comment was made. You recognized the voice, but couldn’t place it. The associates remained standing somewhat in a little cluster as the familiar voice returned to the hallway. Evelyn quickly came around to the head of the table. She motioned for you to both sit down. You kept an eye on Evelyn, just in case she had more direction for you. She smiled at you as a boisterous voice entered the room.
“Good morning everyone!”
Your heart stopped. You knew that voice. You slowly turned your chair so you could try and get a glimpse of who you thought it was. He made his way down the table, greeting each associate that stood there. You looked down at your feet as your heart started to race a little more, feeling like you could get ill. You then see his feet stop in front of you. You slowly stood up, without making eye contact just yet. You extend your hand and slowly raised your head. Evelyn spoke up.
“And this is your amazing illustrator…”
“Y/n…..” Chris stood there in shock as he held your hand. You were ready to faint as your whole entire body didn’t know how to react in the moment. You didn’t want him to let go, as you feared you would fall over. Was this real? Was he real? Scott proceeded to take a seat across the table from you, with the biggest smile on his face as he grabbed his phone and snapped a picture of the two of you seeing each other for the first time.
Sure enough, the picture was sent to Haley with the caption...

Haley was shocked that she received a response from Scott. She left the message unread, seeing that he really only needed to send five words in response. She knew that this is an urgent matter to discuss. A part of her wondered if you would be upset that she could potentially be chatting with Scott about you and Chris. Haley really tried to keep to herself when it came to your love life, but this time she felt that she might need to intervene. She hated seeing you, her best friend, in this state.
She looked at her phone one more time before buzzing up to your place. Taking a deep breath, Haley started to type a response. Not wanting to get into too much detail in this message, she convinced herself to keep it short and sweet.
Hey Scott, I sure wasn’t expecting to hear back from you. Want to chat tomorrow tonight?
Message sent.

The sun was barely on the horizon line as Chris laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. He was unable to sleep any longer. He turned his head to find a sleeping Dodger, snuggled next to him. These were his favourite moments first thing in the morning. Chris turned to grab his phone to take yet another photo of his best friend. The movement caused Dodger to wake, showing Chris great dislike for the disruption.
“I’m sorry bud! Just know that Dad does this because he loves you very much. You will be thankful for all the photos when you are older.”
Chris laughed at his own joke as he snapped a few more photos of the disgruntled dog lying by his side.
“I know you are grumpy now Dodge, but I have a feeling today is going to be okay.”
************************************************************************
With a coffee in hand, you strolled into the office, feeling a little groggy from the late night wine drinking with Haley. Even though your body felt exhausted, today seemed like a better day. The weight on your shoulders was lifted after spending a few hours with your best friend, talking things out.
As you walked through the office, you noticed the looks you were getting from  coworkers. They were greeting you with a smile, some even with a subtle nod. You felt confused by the attention you were receiving this morning. As you arrived to your desk there was a note with your name on it and bottle of sparkling white wine. Not sure who this was from, you eagerly opened the envelope.
Your talents are boundless. Who knew a viral video would finally get you the recognition you have deserved for so long. Congrats, Evelyn.
“Well, all those friendly looks and acknowledgments make sense now. Thanks a lot Chris…”
“It’s more than a thank you!”  You nearly went into flight mode as your boss interjected on the conversation your were having with yourself. “Our sales numbers for that book alone sky rocketed overnight. Evelyn has asked that I have a thank you note sent to Scott and Chris for filming and posting the video. Y/n, you wait! Because of your part in it, I predict that in the next week, you are going to be the most in demand illustrator for this company. I hope you are ready for it.”
“Oh hey, Louise! Thanks. I’m not really too sure how to handle this though.”
“You don’t have to handle anything, just be prepared to be more creative than you have ever been.”
“Huh…..I guess I never imagined it would all happen this way.”
In the back of your mind you could hear his voice. Was the universe trying to tell you something? It seemed as if it was trying to bring the two of you back together.
“Again Y/n, give yourself some credit. You deserve this. Celebrate this success and maybe take a bit of time to bask in the glory of it!”
“I’ll try my best, Louise. Thanks again.”
As Louise walked away, you shook your head as you grabbed the phone to send a message and a photo to Haley, wanting to share the surprise. Instead, you had a sudden urge to check out Instagram to see if Chris posted something. You weren’t one to follow celebrities, so you would have to go out of your way to see what Chris was up to. You were curious though. Your heart started to beat a little faster as your slowly typed out his name in the search bar. There might have been butterflies in the pit of your stomach too. As his name appeared in the results, you questioned why you were even doing this, but you felt that you needed to. You clicked his name and quickly closed your eyes, afraid of what might be on the other end. Taking a deep breath and slowly opening your right eye, to see a blurry image of what seemed to be a human and an animal. You closed your eye again, just to open them both up at the same time. The image was clear now. There was Chris, lying in bed with Dodger, both with sullen looks on their faces. The caption under the photo read “You and me both, Dodge.” Staring at this image for what felt like an hour, but was really only seconds, you drifted off into a daydream of what it would be like to wake up beside these two.
“What has gotten into you Y/n?”  You shook your head again, to get our of the daydream state. Confused by your own reaction to this photo, you texted Haley with a simple question to hopefully place blame for your odd behaviour on something else.
Hales, what was in that wine last night?
************************************************************************
“No I did not add anything to your wine last night! You think I would do something like that to you, without first asking for your permission and secondly, not join in on the adventure?”
“Leave it up to you Hales to turn things around and make it funny.”
“So did you add on to the note sent to Chris saying that you love him?”
“Seriously Hales?” Y/n knew that Haley was trying hard to keep the conversation light hearted.
“You can’t tell me you don’t have feelings for him. The universe really seems to be cheering you on with this. Why don’t you just go along with it?”
“But…”
“There is no but. Just go along with it, okay?”
“Yah, okay.”
“Can you sound a little more enthusiastic?” Just as Haley asked you this, her phone started to vibrate with the incoming call. “Y/n, I gotta go, be more enthusiastic!….BYE!”
“Hales?..........Haley?”
You stood there, puzzled by Haley’s abrupt ending to the call. Staring at your phone screen, not quite sure what to make of what happened, you shrugged it off and texted her.
You didn’t seem in distress when you cut off our call, so I hope you are okay. Just let me know you are alive.
************************************************************************
“Hello, Haley speaking!”
“Hey! It’s Scott. Did I catch you at a bad time?”
“Sure didn’t. I was actually just on a call with Y/n, trying to convince her to follow the universe’s guidance that is leading her back to your brother.”
“Excellent! So we are going to get along, aren’t we?”
“I have a feeling we will. Again, thanks for getting back to me. I truly wasn’t expecting to hear from you. I felt a little lost on how to help my best friend.”
“Everything happens for a reason. We are going to make this work. We just need to plan this out carefully. I have an idea, and I want to see if you are up for it.”
“I’m all ears.”
“What if Chris and I wrote a children’s book?”
“And Y/n was the illustrator for it?”
“Exactly! So do you know how we can go about this?”
“I know exactly how to…you got a pen and paper handy to write some notes?
“I sure do.”
”Step one….”
************************************************************************
Haley and Scott agreed that the plan needed to be set in motion pretty quick. After sleeping on the ideas that were created during their two hour long conversation, Scott was ready to tackle the first hurdle: convince Chris to write a book. Now was the moment as he stood outside Chris’ office door. He texted Haley first.
Wish me luck.
He wasn’t waiting any longer. He quietly knocked on the door and walked in before Chris could even respond.
“So, I’ve been thinking about some things and wondered how you would feel about maybe working on a fun project, you know…the two of us”
Looking up from his computer, settling his chin upon his hands clutched together, Chris is bracing for some elaborate idea. He doesn’t have a response, except to stare at Scott as he sat down.
“Okay, you haven’t disapproved yet, so I will continue telling you about it. After receiving that note from Evelyn, thanking us for reading the children’s book, I thought to myself that maybe we can write our own children’s book. Between the two of us, we could probably come up with some kind of story. Maybe we include a dog and two little boys going on a fun adventure. I don’t know. It’s just an idea that I can’t get out of my brain. Then we could donate the proceeds of the sales to charity.”
You could tell that Chris was pondering the idea as Scott sat across the desk from him, patiently waiting for some kind of response. Chris didn’t hate the idea. He also didn’t fully support it yet. His mind was filling with questions about how they would go about creating this so called book.
“So, I don’t hate the idea. I actually really like it. And you know we would have to dedicate the book to the kids. But I have so many questions. How do we even begin writing this? What is our timeline for completion? Who is even going to accept an idea like this?”
Scott stared back at him, happy that Chris somewhat approved of this idea. He wanted so bad to tell him that Y/n could be the illustrator, but he also wanted to tread lightly through this territory, as he sensed Chris might actually be up for creating something together.
“Whoa….slow down bro. I don’t even have the answers yet, but if this is something you might have the slightest interest in being a part of, how about I try and get a hold of Evelyn? I know you are busy today, so I will see if I can chat with her. I have a feeling their publishing firm would fully support us with this idea. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Can I at least do that?”
“Yes, you can.”
“I don’t think you will regret this!” Scott hurried from the room to grab the phone of his pocket. Feeling like he couldn’t text quick enough, he finally got the words onto the screen.
Haley, he liked the idea.
Sent.

A couple of days had passed, and it felt like things were getting back to normal for you, especially at work. You still had your deadlines to meet, and clients to make happy. In general, you felt more inspired than usual. The work you were creating felt like some of the best you had done in a long time. In the midst of sending off proofs to your client, an email come through from Evelyn. For the most part you are an optimistic person, but then there were moments like this one. Anxiety was making an appearance. Without even reading the email yet, you expected the worst. Evelyn never emailed you, so what could it be. Maybe you were were looped into a conversation that you weren’t supposed to be included in. Once your client’s email was sent off, with hesitation you opened Evelyn’s message. It was titled: Important Meeting – Please Respond Immediately.
“I’m getting fired…I know it.”
You opened the email without much confidence in what you were about to read.
Y/n and Louise,
Sorry I can’t be there to give you this news and discuss it with you in person, but I will address everything you need to know in this email. Please read carefully.
Thanks to this weeks increased interest in the works we have been publishing, we have been approached to work on a children’s book with a high profile client. Though I cannot disclose who this client is right now, they have requested a meeting with our head publishing team at our NYC headquarters. As I am already in Manhattan for other meeting over the next week, I have scheduled a meeting with them. This meeting will be on Monday morning. The client has also requested that Y/n is involved in this project, as the illustrator.
Y/n, we have booked you on a red eye flight, having you arrive into the city on Sunday morning, giving you a chance to prepare for the meeting. A car will be at the airport to pick you up and take you to the hotel. It will also be there at the hotel to take you to the meeting at HQ. I have also reached out to your clients that have deadlines next week. We have pushed their deadlines to the following week, as we will have you based out of the NYC office for a bit. All the materials that you need to do any illustrating while you are here will be set up in an office for you.
I know this is late notice, but I hope that this opportunity is one what you are willing and able to tackle with our team. All your flight information is attached to this email. Please let me know as soon as possible that you will be in attendance for this meeting on Monday morning.
Thanks, Evelyn
You sat there silent and in shock. Louise was right when she told you that things were going to change. This was an opportunity that you couldn’t pass up. This was a dream that was just days away from coming true. Without hesitation you responded to Evelyn’s email.
Evelyn,
Thank you for your email this morning and organizing this amazing opportunity. I will see you on Monday morning.
Regards, Y/n
You really just wanted to scream in excitement. Instead you stood up from your desk, took a quick look around. The coast was clear to do a little happy dance.
************************************************************************
Chris was happy that it was the weekend. There were plans in place for the family to spend time together. Though work never really was done for him, he was finally taking time for himself. Being able to spend time with his family for a couple of days is just what he needs. As he finished up reading through yet another script that came through from his agent, he closed his computer and exited his office, with no intention of returning to it until after the weekend.
“Thank god it is the weekend!” Chris was elated at the fact that it was time to relax.
“I couldn’t agree more, but before the weekend starts, can we have a quick chat about the book idea?” Scott had startled Chris as he turned the corner into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water and start cooking supper.
“Did you actually get somewhere with it?”
“Sure did! I know I should have checked with you first, but I hope you are free to take a trip into Manhattan on Sunday night, and meet with Evelyn and her team on Monday morning.”
Stopping dead in his tracks, Chris was surprised for a moment.
“Wow…I’m impressed Scott. Lucky for you, I am free for the meeting. I guess we are doing this then, huh?”
“Well, we aren’t tied into the project just yet, but they are going to give us some clarity on what it would take to make this book.”
“Alright then, let’s do it. Can I say that I am actually kind of excited about this now?”
“I certainly was hoping that you were going to say it. I have a feeling this is going to be better than we expect.”
Little did Chris know that this meeting might change his life…

The Heart Knows Best: Part III
Summary: They still can’t get each other off their minds. Little do they know that even though distance plays a huge factor in ever knowing one another, something is bringing them together.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Female Reader
Warnings: None
Word count: approx. 2300
Author’s Note: If this is your first time reading this series, catch up with Part I and Part II here. Thanks to those who have read the series so far and have sent messages. It is great to hear from those who are reading it. It is my hope to have Part IV up shortly.
************************************************************************
You couldn’t be happier to be home. You already felt like you needed a vacation from your vacation, but the demands of work would quickly occupy your mind. As you turned on your phone upon arriving at the airport terminal, the number on your email app grew. It was your boss inquiring about the timelines for various projects. She must have tracked your flight and knew that once you arrived it would be hard for you to avoid all the emails that she would be sending. Since taking an entry level position as a junior illustrator for an international publishing firm, you had worked your way up the ranks to work directly with the lead art director, as the senior illustrator. Because of your talent and determination, this position allowed for you to gain some of the highest profile accounts that came through the firm, working with some of the most well-known authors. Who knew that all those years of drawing since you were a little girl, would lead to this dream job. Even though the demands of the job could be overwhelming at times, no amount of pressure would take away the love you had for it.
Your brother Ben offered to pick you up from the airport, knowing that you would like to see a familiar face at the other end of customs when you arrived. He wasn’t wrong. The two of you were only two years apart. He was older than you, and as a stereo typical older brother to a sister, he protected you. As you passed through the doors to find what seemed to be a sea of thousands of people, Ben’s smiling face greeted you.
“Welcome home sis!”
Ben gave you the biggest hug, as if he hadn’t seen you for months on end.
“Thank you for coming to get me. I would much rather sit in the front passenger seat and control the music for once!”
You both had a good laugh, because you both knew all too well that you were the one that would control the playlists while on road trips with your family and friends.
As you slowly made your way to Ben’s car, you were a lot more quiet than usual. Ben was used to you talking his ear off, telling him all the stories of your adventures you had while you were away.
“Is everything ok, Y/n?”
You knew that he would ask you that very question and debated on whether you would tell him the truth, or tell him the smallest of lies. You felt compelled to tell him the truth, but it would take some time to get there.
“I’m definitely tired. Do you think that maybe we can go for ice cream? I’m not quite ready to go home and just want to hang out with you Ben.”
“I’ll never say no to ice cream! You must want to talk about something though; we never just go for ice cream. Wait a sec……what is his name and do I need to beat him up?”
Not sure how to respond yet again, you stop and look at him before crawling into the car. Looking at Ben’s stature, with was tall and skinny, you weren’t sure that he had the muscles to withstand a fight with anyone.
“You might not want to pick a fight with him, Ben. And if you really want to know, you already know him. His name is Chris…...”
************************************************************************
Chris laid down on the grass, staring up at the clouds through a clearing the in the trees that towered above him. Dodger ran circles around him, stopping every once in a while to lick his face or nudge him in the arm so that he would play with him. He was grateful for the energy of this dog, keeping him on toes and distracting him from what was really going on in his life. He was avoiding his phone and emails for the rest of the day, knowing that he had some work to do.
“Dodge, what am I supposed to do?”
He stopped making circles around Chris and proceeded to lick his face again. It’s like he knew that Chris needed a little extra love and support that day.
“Alright, that wasn’t really the answer I was looking for, but I appreciate all the love you are giving me today, bud. I need it.”
Chris sat up and pulled Dodger in to give him a hug before getting up to make his way back into the house, where Scott just finished making supper for the two of them.
“Hey Dopey, are you ready to eat something?”
“Yeah.”
Chris quietly took a seat at the kitchen table as Scott dished out some food for him, one scoop at a time, seeing if he would tell him when to stop. Chris sat there just staring at the food piling up, as Scott captured it all on video, figuring that one day Chris will need a good laugh at his own expense.
“Do you know if the kids left any books around here last time they came to visit?”
“I’m pretty sure they did.”
“I need to pick out a children’s book to recommend and I would love it to be one that they like.”
“Why don’t you make it a little more personable and it be one that you always read to them. I’m pretty sure they left the books in your office on the bookshelf, thinking that Uncle Chris might need some easy reading material when they aren’t around. Also, you better eat entire pile of pasta…”
Chris looked down as he dropped his fork on the table, laughing at the sight before him, causing him to shake his head. He picked the fork back up, took a few bites and pushed his plate away.
“Thank you for supper Scott. Just leave the dishes and I will clean them up later.”
“You didn’t even really eat! I’m telling mom!”
“Go ahead!”
Chris left the table on a mission to let his mind escape. He entered his office and b-lined it to the bookshelf that lined the walls across the room from his desk. Starting at the middle of the bookcase, he scoured the shelves for the kids books. He stopped for a moment and realized he was looking in the wrong spot. He turned his eyes downward to the bottom shelf, where the kids could safely reach the shelves. There they were. Nicely placed, looking at if they were meant to be a part of the collection, standing upright thanks to the bookend. Chris sat on the floor against the shelf, looking through the books. There was something about those books that made Chris feel sentimental for a moment. He loved those kids and he loved those books. There was one in particular that stood out to him. It had a picture of a dog on the front that always reminded him of Dodger. The kids loved that book so much because of the dog in the story. You could see the love for that book with the bent corner and chocolate pudding stained pages. This had to be the book that he was going to use for his project.
Scott and Dodger snuck into the office and sat beside Chris, looking through the books with him, noticing the book that was in his hands.
“The kids really do love that book. I should record you reading this book and we should send it to them!”
“You know, that’s not a bad idea. They would love it. Funny voices and all.”
Scott pulled out his phone and started to record the video. Sounding very stately as he started reading; he introduced the author of the book, then the illustrator.
“This book is illustrated by Y/N  Y/L/N………I love how the dog in this book looks like Dodger!!! Here we go. Once Upon a Time…”
Without even noticing, he had said her name aloud. If only he knew…
************************************************************************
It was time for you to show your face at the office. You figured you could just sneak in without anyone noticing, as you were determined to have a productive day, without any distractions. You felt inspired and ready to create some images for the books that were coming across your desk prior to your vacation. Knowing that it would take a few hours to really get the ideas down on paper, you put your head phones on to help you focus. The hours passed without even taking a break. Your boss scared you out of focus as she reviewed your progress and was pleased with the results so far. She was always amazed with your work and your overall work ethic. As she left you to you continue with your work, you noticed that your phone screen was lighting up. It was best that you took a break for a late lunch and to catch up with the messages that were left for you. For the most part, it was your clients wanting to touch base and see how the illustrations were coming along. There were also a few messages from Haley. She usually sent you random jokes or quotes to help you get through your day, but it seemed as if there was something a little more urgent. 5 missed calls and one text stating that you should call her when you get the chance.
You were feeling a little selfish at that moment, but now was not the time for you to get into a serious conversation with her. You ignored her messages, placed the phone out of sight, and got back to work, knowing that all the drawings wouldn’t finish themselves.
************************************************************************
It was a new day, and it was certainly feeling like it for the first time in a few days. With an early start to the day, Chris was productive on answering a series of emails from producers and his agent. Taking a break from this work, he found a spot in the sun filled living room to do some recreational reading. His brother sat across the room from him, staring at his phone, as if he were in a deep text conversation with who knows who. With a lack of desire to spend his time catching up on social media, little did Chris know that Scott had made a little post that morning, captioning it: “Story Time with Uncle Chris”.
Just as Chris had suspected, Scott was reading through text from friends and a multitude of messages in response to the post. There was so much love for this video, but who wouldn’t fall in love with Chris reading yet another children’s book. Sorting through his direct messages, he saw one titled “I Need Your Help…”. Typically these kinds of messages were from people asking for some kind of hand out to help with their cause and would easily be passed by, but for some reason Scott felt compelled to read this message.
Hey Scott, I know we don’t know each other, but we might have an unexpected connection that I need your help with. My friend Y/n happened to be in Manhattan recently, and was helped out by your brother Chris on a rainy morning in Central Park a couple of days ago. I know she is forever grateful for what your brother did to help out. If you can pass on her thanks to him, I know she would appreciate it.
Thanks so much, Haley.
Ps. You know that book Chris is reading in your most recent post…Y/n illustrated it!
“Shut up.”
“I’m being quiet, why are you telling me to shut up?”
“Sorry! I was just reading texts from friends. I thought I said that in my head.”
In complete shock of the message he just read, Scott started to formulate a reply to Haley. With zero confidence in what to say back to her, his response was short and to the point.
Hi Haley, we should chat…
************************************************************************
“You have reached Haley! Sorry I can’t answer your call right now. Either I’m ignoring you, or I’m actually busy. Either way, just text me and I promise to get back to you!”
Her message always made you laugh, as her phone went right to voice mail. She was actually busy on the other line. You felt a little anxious about what she needed to tell you. It was a long day and it felt like you needed a glass of wine to calm your nerves. A nice spot on your balcony looking over the waterfront was the solution. The perks of your job found you living close to the office, in a condo looking over Coal Harbour. It was the dream and you were living it. As you sat down and put your feet up, taking a deep breath, you saw that Haley was now returning your call.
“Hales, I’m sorry that I didn’t return your call earlier. It was a busy first day back at the office.”
“Hi to you too, can you please look at the text I just sent you. But make sure you have me on speaker…please!”
A little puzzled by her request, you put her on speaker and loaded her message.
“What the heck are you sending me? Is this just another gif of a cat dressed up at an old lady?”
“Just watch it.”
The video came up. It was Chris. A smile came to your face. You see him sitting on the floor of what seemed to be a home library or office, with Dodger snuggled in against his leg. He was holding what appeared to be a book. Not really paying attention to what he is saying at the start of the video, you finally focus in on it.
“This book is illustrated by Y/N Y/L/N………I love how the dog in this book looks like Dodger!!! Here we go. Once Upon a Time…”
Your heart stopped. He said your name without even realizing it. You sat in shock as you closed the video, not needing to watch any more of it.
“So…..?”
“He said my name.”
Staring blankly at the phone, you aren’t too sure what to make of all of this. What were the chances that this would happen?
“Should I bring you more wine?”
“Yes please.”

The Heart Knows Best: Part II
Summary: After their brief encounter in the park, both Y/n and Chris struggle to figure out what they are feeling. This is a continuation of The Heart Knows Best: Part I
Pairing: Chris Evans x Female Reader
Warnings: None
Word count: approx. 1800
A/N: Thank again to all that read part one! I was feeling inspired by a song for part two. If you haven’t heard “I Don’t Wanna Know” by GOLDHOUSE & Mokita, have a listen to it, as it plays an important part in the story. Again, I am open to any feedback. I hope you enjoy Part II!
************************************************************************
Your eyes slowly open to the view of the umbrella propped up in the corner. It hasn’t moved since you placed it there to dry the day before. It’s as if it is haunting you. Images flashed in your mind of the rain drops that fell upon his head and slowly trailed down his face, before he put his hood up. Even though the skies darkened, his blue eyes still hypnotized you. As your hand touched his, the electricity that flowed through your body, causing your heart to skip. This is a feeling that you won’t forget any time soon. It didn’t haunt you, it invigorated you.
You could re-live every moment. It’s like a movie replaying through your mind, scene for scene unedited. On any given day you could barely remember what you ate for breakfast, so how was it you could recall every detail from a brief encounter in the park?
“So y/n, you aren’t going to let this infiltrate your life, are you?”
As you laid there staring down that umbrella, your phone kept exploding with notifications steadily rolling in. Your closest friend back home seemingly bombarded your message box, dying to know what has happened to you. It wasn’t until late last night that you had finally messaged her to simply say that you met Chris. Not one more detail was given before you fell asleep, hence the outpouring of concern and genuine intrigue that flooded your notifications. You hesitated to look at the phone, as you really couldn’t put off responding much longer. The phone buzzed yet again. It was time to make the call.
“Please god, tell me you got his number” were the first words out of Haley’s mouth when she answered the call.
“Good morning to you too! And no, I did not get his number. I just own his umbrella now. It will be my lasting memento of the occasion.”  You took a picture of the umbrella and sent it to her.
“So what are you going to do about this then?”
“I’m so confused and overwhelmed right now, so most likely nothing! It seems like a great idea to me.”
Haley knew that she needed to push you. You were timid at times, and if it weren’t for Haley, there are some things that would not have happened in your life if she didn’t push you. Going on vacation to New York alone was one of those things.
“Are you going to regret that decision? If you tell me no, you better have a good reason!”
“The answer is no and it is because I come home tonight. There isn’t a better reason. End of discussion.”
“This is not the end of this discussion. I am going to give you some words of advice. You can take it or you can leave it.”
You sat there in silence as you knew you are about hear the advice you should probably take, yet dreaded.
“Age will never be a factor, but you are about to turn 35 and you have big dreams still. Probably bigger dreams than most kids. How much longer do you want these dreams to just be dreams? I’m not expecting you to answer right now, because I have more to say. You are still there, right?”
“I am still here…” as you hold back tears and a shaky voice. You didn’t want her to know your current state of being.
“Okay good. I know you are leaving and the chances of even finding him again are near impossible. I’m not saying that you have to go out and find him, I just don’t want you to give up. Or at least if you do give up, can you do it with little to no regrets?”
“Okay…” you said in hesitance as you wiped away the last of the tears rolling down your cheek.
“I’ll let you go as I know it is you last day, but promise me that starting now, you won’t live with regret?”
“I’ll try my best, fairy godmother!”
“Good! I love ya Y/n! Text me when you get home.”
“Love you too, Hales. Bye!”
As you ended the call, you threw the phone across the bed in frustration. The frustration was with yourself. You felt that you could have handled everything better yesterday. How long could you let this regret linger?
************************************************************************
“Good morning sunshine!”
“Morning Scott.”
“Where are you at? I thought you were coming home last night. Wait a sec…did you hook up with someone?”
“NO! I just needed to finish up some things in the city before heading back. It took a little longer than I expected.” This response to Scott seemed a little less enthusiastic than usual, but Chris wasn’t feeling it this morning.
“Yah, okay…..was there a girl involved in this finishing up things?”
There was silence.
“Are you cutting out, Chris? Can you hear me?”
The silence was strong, as if his connection was cutting out. Instead it was just Chris lost in his thoughts, as images of Y/n ran through his mind.
“HELLLLOOO. Earth to Chris. I really hope you didn’t crash the vehicle.” Scott was growing concerned for his brother.
“Sorry, I am here. I can hear you loud and clear. I kind of got lost in my thoughts. I’m feeling a little off today. Can we chat when I get home?”
Chris was nowhere near ready to chat with his brother and knew that when he arrived home, he didn’t really want to be alone in his thoughts for much longer.
“Sure. By the sounds of it, do you want me to make sure that the beer is fully stocked in your fridge?”
“Maybe check how my whiskey supply is holding up. I might need something stronger.”
“This must be serious. Can you tell me one thing…you aren’t dying are you?”
Even though Scott couldn’t see it, Chris had finally cracked a smile as he let out a brief laugh.
“Don’t worry, I am not dying. To reassure you even more, it is nothing bad…I promise.”
“Okay, good! I’ll see you when you get home then. Later bro.”
“See ya soon.”
Chris was thankful for the close relationship he had with his brother. They are each other’s sounding board when life throws them curve balls. Y/n was the latest curve ball in Chris’ life and he wasn’t quite sure what to do about it. How is it that an encounter that he had while out for a morning run, could impact his life so much? After he parted ways with Y/n, he replayed every single moment with her. He questioned what he could have done differently. ‘What if’ was the phase of the past 24 hours. Knowing that he needed to drown out his own thoughts, he quickly turned on some music as loud as his ears could handle. A little car dance and sing along never hurt a guy, especially when he knew he had three more hours till he made it home. Just then he started to question his choice of listening to music.
“You looked into my eyes
Your face I memorized
Didn’t say a word but you felt like home”
“Seriously?” he asked himself as he turned the music off as quick as he turned it on, throwing his head back in defeat. “This is going to be a long drive.”

“Good afternoon, this is your captain speaking. Welcome aboard flight 549 to Vancouver.  We are expected to land in approximately 5 hours. Please sit back and enjoy the flight.”
Looking down at your phone and earbuds, you felt a little disappointed that this trip was already done. Manhattan was now out of view from your window seat. You felt even more disappointed when you thought about Chris and the ‘what if’s’ you were leaving behind in that city. It was time to get home though. You had needed a vacation from your vacation. Lucky for you, you sleep well while on the plane, so you would have time to rest up. So long as you had your music to drown out all that was going on around you, things would be fine. With the earbuds in place and the music starting up. The words of the song hit you…
“You looked into my eyes
Your face I memorized
Didn’t say a word but you felt like home”
“Well isn’t that just perfect. Even the music knows how I feel right now.”
“Sorry, were you saying something?” the stranger next to you in the middle seat politely asked.
This question brought you out of a slight daze as you realized you were probably shouting with the earbuds still in your ears. You quickly pull them out, so you didn’t yell at the stranger.
“I am so sorry, I must have said aloud what I was thinking. I apologize.” In embarrassment, you put your headphones back in and curled up against the window, wishing you were invisible as you mumbled under your breath...
“This is going to be a long flight.”

As Chris parked his vehicle on the front drive, he was greeted by Scott, who was holding two glasses of whiskey on the rocks.
“Welcome home, bro.”
“What are you gonna drink?” as Chris jokingly takes both glasses of whiskey after dropping his luggage on the front step.
“You weren’t lying when you said you might need something stronger.” as he took one glass back from Chris and took a sip from it. “I might need something strong too.”
The brothers both laughed as they entered into Chris’ house, dropping his things off by the staircase, and heading straight to the back deck where they found a spot to sit and chat. Not quite sure who should break the ice to discuss what was going on with Chris, they both sat in silence for a bit, looking out over the yard. The levels of whiskey in both their glasses had gone down significantly, in the short amount of time that they sat there. Scott knew that he shouldn’t pry, so he gave Chris the time to process what he was going to say. He knew his brother well enough to know that this was not going to be a short conversation. The silence did’t last much longer as Chris finished up his drink and the left over ice clinked on the wall of the glass, as he set it down on the table. Sitting back in the chair. he let out a sigh, signaling to Scott that he was ready to talk.
“Her name was...and I guess still is, Y/n”

It was early enough in the morning for you to contemplate whether or not you should turn over and go back to bed, or get up and tackle the day. For some, if they were on vacation like you were, sleep would be the first option. Not today though. You felt the urge to get up and seize the day. There was something deep down inside that was pushing you to get up. It was as if something was calling you go out and find something, but that something was hidden.
Tumblr media
You are the type to make sure that your makeup and hair is perfect before heading out the door each day, but the intensity of this calling pushed you to quickly get ready. With your yoga pants and favourite band t-shirt on, you grab your notebook and pen, along with a sweater, phone and hotel room key. Standing in front of the mirror, you think to yourself that at 6am, who cares what they look like, especially when the rest of the world around you is sleeping.
This city gave you life. Even though your home was thousands of miles away at the current moment, it was okay. You felt more at home here in Manhattan than you did in your own hometown, and that is probably why you kept returning. When life permitted, you would visit the city to rejuvenate your soul and get back to feeling like yourself again. You were never really sure why this city did that for you, but never argued with your feelings, especially when it came to how that heart of yours was feeling.
This was the first time that you woke up at such an ungodly hour to take a walk and enjoy the silence that is so rare in the city. As you strolled down the street in a lazy manner, you knew that a coffee was needed to kick off the day. Your favourite café was a few blocks away. It was not open yet, so a small detour would help continue your early morning adventure.
You found the perfect spot…a concrete bench in the middle of Times Square, where you could sit cross legged and relax. Sitting quietly, you looked around to see that there was not a soul around. Strangely enough, you didn’t feel alone. The constant flashing of lights and images on the oversized billboards kept you company, as they seemed to be brighter than the sun that was slowly rising on the horizon you could not see. This view could be considered sensory overload, but for you, you loved it because it was always changing, just like your life. You could only take it in small doses though. As you sat there and took it all in, your hands gently opened up the notebook you carried with you.
The blank pages stared back at you. Those blank page did not scare you. It was everything that you were holding with you in, that scared you. It was also those blank pages that allowed for you to convey what scared you. The life you were given was beyond blessed. It was a life filled with endless opportunities to dream and the chance to live them out. There was one thing that you had always dreamed of though. It was love. Yes, you had the endless love of family and friends to fill your life. Even though you have been in and out of love a majority of your adult life, it was ultimately the soulmate kind of love that you were in search of. A love that, in a way, scared you.
The pages slowly filled up about the dreams you had for this kind of love. Line by line, you wondered if you were being unrealistic. But yet, the words kept flowing from the heart to the hand, and on to the pages, making it all seem a little more official. With the quickness to get all that you were feeling onto those pages, you could feel the return of what got you out to the middle of Times Square so early that morning.
“What are you trying to tell me?” you asked aloud, as if someone was going to answer.
The feelings grew stronger to the point that if you didn’t get up and start to walk again, you may be ill. You quickly closed up the book with an unfinished thought barely written down. This thought ended mid-sentence. You needed to go though, not to escape what you were feeling, but to dive in and understand why that feeling grew even more. The coffee you once needed, now slipped your mind as you were on a mission to get to Central Park. You were seeking refuge in the park. This is where your hair, like the leaves in the trees, would blow in the wind and the smell of fresh air would fill your lungs. It was the mix of the city life and the solitude of nature that had a place in your heart. You knew exactly where you wanted to sit. It was just beneath the trees near the Gapstow Bridge, looking towards the buildings that towered over 5th Avenue. What a view it was. You found such peace when you sat there.
As sun kissed clouds filled the sky with orange and pink hues, as if it were a painting, you met the entrance of the park with a great big sigh.
“So heart, you led me here, now reveal to me why.”
Your steps slowly took you to the spot you loved the most. Finding the tree you would frequently sit under when returning to the city, you took off her sweater and set it on the ground before sitting down.
“Alright, you got me to this spot. Why have you suddenly gone quiet? Are you at peace now that we are here?”
You realized that all those feelings that plagued you since you awoke, had disappeared. This clarity allowed for you to focus on the thoughts that filled the mind, the daydreams of the perfect life that you only imagined. As you drifted off into those daydreams, the world started to wake up. The beautiful morning songs of the birds still outweighed the sounds of the cars getting people where they needed to go. As your eyes remained closed, you could pick out the sounds of ducks on the pond, bicycle wheels speeding past, and the quick paced footsteps of the runners as they went by. Without even realizing, the smile on your face grew larger. You felt happy for the first time today.
“I guess I just needed to press pause, didn’t I? I am okay with that, if there is where I need to be.”
Taking another deep breath of the fresh air, your heart rate slowed. A sense of calm had come over you, causing you to drift off not into daydreams, but actual dreams. The tree was the perfect pillow, and the warm wind…a perfect blanket.
That warm wind slowly started to cool and gain some speed, bringing in what seemed to be a morning storm. Though there was not a single drop of rain falling from the sky yet, the painted sky turned dark. Yet, you were still asleep, complete unaware of what was happening around you. That was until a single drop of rain landed upon your nose. The shelter from the tree had stopped a majority of the rain from soaking you, but the water that had landed on the paved path was slowly starting to drain off into the grass, in the direction of where you sat.
Not fully awake and alert of what was going on, the rain started to come down even more. This change in weather scared you out of your slumber. In a daze, you scrambled to find the phone on the ground and your sweater, that seemingly started to soak up what little water that was streaming off the pathways. Not sure of which way to go to seek the closest shelter, you threw your hands into the sky in frustration.
“Seriously? You bring me out here, only to get soaked by the rain. If this is a joke or something, you don’t see me laughing!”
A couple running by looked at you as if you were going crazy. They even looked up to the sky, as if there was a giant you were talking to. Yelling at the sky was not going to help in that moment so you started to cross the bridge in search of a place for to stay dry. Suddenly your heart stopped. You had forgotten the notebook under the tree. The thought of this notebook being completely ruined by the stream of water flowing down the hill, broke your heart. Quickly turning around to run back to the tree, you were stopped in your tracks by a human, standing in the way.
Almost in tears, you kept your head down to keep the rain from your face and the embarrassment of being on the verge of crying.
“I am so sorry…I just…please excuse me. My life is written in that notebook. It’s slowly…. Becoming a soggy mess under that tree right there…I need to get to it before it is completely….ruined.”
“...You mean this notebook?”
The stranger slowly pulls out a notebook from under their sweater. Seeing that notebook in the hand of a stranger would have worried some individuals with the idea they read about your life’s greatest secrets. You knew better than that. This stranger didn’t have time to read the notebook. With a sense of relief, you sighed as your head still hung low. You couldn’t make eye contact with this stranger, as you still felt humiliated for treasuring that notebook so much.
“Thank you so much. I know it’s just a notebook and I shouldn’t be crying about it, but I’ve had that notebook for such a long time. There are lots of memories and dreams written on those pages.”
The stranger kept the notebook in their hands as they continued to protect it with their sweater.
“I understand. I can’t imagine losing something like this. When you got up to find shelter, I saw it fall from your lap. I couldn’t just leave it sitting there.”
His voice calmed you. It felt familiar. It felt safe.
You slowly started to look up at the hand that held the notebook, and the other hand that held the umbrella you weren’t even aware that you were standing under. He was no longer protecting himself from the rain that was coming down. He was more concerned that this notebook, and you, would stay a little drier than he now was. What kind of stranger would be so kind as to do this? You slowly started to raise your head, knowing you was protected from the rain by this stranger. As you stood staring straight into the eyes of this man, you became even calmer. You knew exactly who this was.
“Here, please take my umbrella to protect you and this notebook.” He slowly handed you the notebook, which appeared to be in near perfect condition, along with the umbrella.
A smile reappeared on your face as you slowly extended your hand to retrieve the notebook from his hand. Looking up into his eyes, and his friendly smile, you accidentally grabbed his hand instead of the book. You were quick to remove your hand from his. In that moment, your heart skipped a beat.
“Oh! I am so sorry!”
You felt your cheeks turned a little more red than they already were from the cool breeze now blowing on your face.
“Thank you for your kindness and the offering of the umbrella. How will I ever get this back to you? Maybe you should take it will you. My sweater will protect me.”
Looking down at the sweater, you realize it was soaking wet and muddy from being on the ground. He laughed a little when he probably shouldn’t have, but he knew you just wanted to get out of there, without inconveniencing anyone. There was something about you that put a smile on his face. Just then, his heart skipped a beat too.
“I’m wearing layers, and I have a hood. I’m staying close by, so I’m not worried about getting wet. Please keep it.”
He extended his hand that held the umbrella out towards her, now fully standing in the rain that appeared to be letting up for the time being. You were still lost in his eyes and smile. You didn’t want to argue with him as he showed such kindness in that moment.
“I will be forever grateful for you and what you have done for me this morning. Thank you.”
Unsure of what else to say and feeling overwhelmingly bad for making him stand there in the rain, you slowly turned to start walking away from him until his voice stopped you.
“What is your name?”
Without hesitation you replied. “It’s Y/n.”
“Well y/n, I hope your day turns around.”
“Thank you”
You smiled again as you turned to walk away. With only a few steps between the two of you on that bridge, his voice stops you yet again, causing you to turn your head to look back at him.
“By the way, I’m Chris.”
You knew exactly who he was, as your face lit up from beneath the umbrella he gave her.
“Bye Chris…and thank you again.” You pick up your pace as you walked away, waving goodbye with that precious notebook in hand.
The steps between the two of you grew bigger and bigger. The distance separated you both to the point you couldn’t see each other anymore. Your heart started calling to you again. Feeling compelled to stop at the entrance of the park before stepping foot back to reality, you realized why you were supposed to be in the park that morning.
“It was him. Chris was the reason for all of this. Wasn’t it?”
In that moment your heart skipped a beat again. You knew exactly what your heart was saying, clear than ever, probably for the first time ever in your life.
From under the gifted umbrella, you looked back at the park entrance, hoping for a brief moment that he would be standing behind you, but he wasn’t. The honking of a taxi’s horn brought you back down to Earth, as the crosswalk light changed and you ran across to find shelter from the growing storm.
