Why are we so narrow minded? And, what would change if we had a broader perspective?
I recently got into the topic with someone about why our perspective is so narrow. I’ve personally felt like the only thing we truly know is what’s in front of us. I often think to myself, I am sitting here writing this blog for you and you are experiencing something completely different. You may be sitting in your bedroom with your pet or you may be on break at work. But, there's so much more happening right outside your door or even right in front of you that you may not notice because all you know, at that moment, is what’s in front of you. But, what would happen if our perspective was broadened? Let’s start with the fact that we have two eyes, two ears, and one mouth. This limits our everyday perspective on situations, reality, and dictates our reactions. We have two ears which only lets us hear the perspective of those around us. This is important because life is like a game of telephone or “he said she said”. We only hear what those around us want us to hear, whether it’s only their perspective on a situation or it is a variation of the truth. We only have two eyes as well, what we see is what we know. You grow up really only seeing what’s in front of you or around you.
I truly think that the reason our perspective is so narrow is because life with two eyes, two ears, and one mouth is traumatizing and hard enough as it is. This does not mean that life lacks the ability to be good. There’s always going to be good and bad but I feel that if our perspective was broadened that our brains would not be able to fully comprehend all that life truly is.
