Hey meg, do you have any suggestions for solo travel destinations? I've been interrailing before and did a summer working in america but have been home for nearly a year now and that feeling of wanting to wander and experience is still there , like a bit of an itch, if that makes sense but I have no clue where to go!

My guess is that you’re British or European so I’m going to go with that!

Depends on a few things: your budget, your time, your interests, why you want to go etc.

Let me unpack that last reason a bit - if you want to go to eat great food, have a search for top foodie places. You wanna take interesting photos? See what comes up on travel blogs on Instagram. You like history, hiking, partying? There are loads of great articles with ‘top 10 places to ’. Have a research based on what you want to get out of it.

If you’re needing to just scratch an itch to get away for a bit, don’t underestimate the number of great places to visit in the UK. Go somewhere you haven’t been before, maybe the north, maybe Devon, maybe a city you’ve heard interesting things about. Stay in an Airbnb shepherds hut in the countryside or try out a hostel in a big city. Maybe there’s somewhere really near you that you’ve never really spent time?

If you want to do a short trip abroad, there are so many places it’s easy to get to with a quick cheap flight (sometimes cheaper than our trains lbr). Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Berlin, Seville, Barcelona, Rome...the list is endless. Eastern Europe is more affordable and exciting to explore - Ljubliana, Sofia, Sarajevo, Prague, Vienna....

Hostels are the best way to meet people, and Hostel World or Hostel Bookers generally have a great selection.

Long haul the best way to go is to save up and hit a few places at once or travel around somewhere big. So do a big trip of south east Asia, explore India, skip over to Hong Kong, Singapore, S Korea, Japan. (If you’re going to Japan, hmu I plan trips there professionally and can def give you some tips lol)

The best thing to do is research, make a list, look at how much you have to spend or would have to save, and plan. Sometimes just the planning itself helps to scratch that itch!

If your budget is low, perhaps think about looking at Workaway.com or Woofing, where you can find jobs for bread & board, learn new things, meet people, and explore somewhere you might never have considered.

I’m so glad this has been said. It should really go without saying that it’s a dick move to make fun of and put down something other people enjoy.

Especially when part of the reason they enjoy it is because they can’t read it ‘in canon’.

Especially when you are not a person that is affected by this lack of representation.

I would be curious to know how much experience is behind this kind of view. It must be so gratifying when you think you’re being hilarious by making smartass generalizations about characters and how they are written in fanfic, when you won’t even deign to read it. Sounds pretty small-minded to me.
