How to Hold Yourself Accountable as a Professional Writer
Okay maybe youâre not self-employed or professional yet and writing definitely isnât bringing in the big bucks, but youâd like it to some day, and youâre working right now on making that a reality. This post is for you, because the best time to practice getting into a healthy writing habit and holding yourself accountable to writing for that future where itâs your full time gig is nowâbefore itâs essential to do so.
1. It will never be easy
Itâs easy to think that maintaining a schedule or habit for writing would be easy if only it was your full-time gig and all you needed to do. While it might be easier than trying to cram in writing between classes or jobs, it will never be easy. Youâre always going to have multiple things going on, thereâs always going to be something you could be or need to be doing other than writing. Developing good habits right now, when it is really hard, is going to set you up far better than just waiting for it to get easy before you fully commit to it.
2. Set a schedule that actually works for you
I did a whole post on making a writing schedule you can actually manage and maintain here:
But the TL;DR is that in order to keep to a schedule, you have to make sure itâs attainable. Fit when you write around your other life schedule. For example, if youâre really not a morning person, planning on waking up at 5am every morning to write for a couple hours is probably not something youâll be able to maintain. But setting aside an hour before bed may be more manageable for you.
3. Form a habit
To train your brain to make your writing schedule a habit youâll actually stick to, you should make it into a routine. Similar to how you have a bedtime routine that sets you up to feel sleepy at night, a routine that sets you up for writing will make it harder to turn away from your manuscript, and help inspire a productive writing block.
You can create a writing playlist with songs that inspire your project you listen to whenever you begin writing, make a tea or other drink to sip on while you write, grab a snack, share your schedule with a writing buddy and write together, put together a document of inspiring quotes, photos, or other muses you can read, or really anything that gets you into the writing mood. By following this routine every time you set up to write, youâll train your brain to get into a mindset that will make it easier to stick to your writing block.
4. Reward yourself
Brains love doing things for a reward. Maybe after a productive writing block you can spend some time doing something else you love, like watching an episode of your favourite show, lighting a candle, taking a bath, or having a glass of wine, I donât know, anything that would give your brain the happy juice in response to your good work.
5. Set deadlines and goals
Writing consistently is basically the majority of the battle. I donât typically worry about word count, but I do know that it can be helpful for others to set wordcount goals and deadlines to ensure productivity. If that sounds like you, make sure your goals are actionable while also being attainable. âFinish novelâ isnât a great goal, but âwrite 2000 words per week for three monthsâ could be helpful if you know that 2000 words is attainable for you.
Same as before, you can also set rewards for when you reach your goals. I have a big tattoo upcoming if I complete my goal for the year.
The last tip I have for this point is to try to find an accountabili-buddy to hold you to your goals and deadlines if you think that would be helpful for you. As a professional writer, you may be held accountable by an editor or agent, so practicing through asking a buddy to help you set deadlines and deliverables will help prepare you for writing towards a date.
The TL;DR is find out what works for you and practice doing it consistently! Anything else I missed?

One time I was explaining to my dad how unfair it is that every big city has at least a couple gay bars but there are only like 20ish lesbian bars left in the country and he responded with "That's cause gay men have a good party culture. Lesbians don't have time to party, they're too busy debating the sociological implications of things and studying for postgrad degrees" and as much as I wanted to tell him he was out of line for that, as a lesbian who spends all her free time on Tumblr debating sociological implications and messaging other lesbians in discord servers where everyone has a PhD or masters for some reason I felt like I might not be the best person to make that argument

Hi. Hope this finds you well. Just wanted to let you know⊠I just saw this post concerning AI on here and automatically sharing creators' content if they don't opt out of it. I would go under your blog page's settings and scroll down to visibility and opt out of it, they stupidly opted everyone into it by default. I just found out about it this, this morning and opted out myself. I'm not a fan of AI, and it is ridiculous that they make it to where you are opted in by default, how about asking first not just having it toggled on.
hey!!! tysm for letting me knowâi just opted out!! i appreciate u anon đ«¶đ«¶

this is so good. this is real enemies to lovers omg
WASTELAND, BABY!â ellie williams x reader
hi! I'm writing a new series that happens after the events of TLOU II. it's an enemies to lovers. A story about ellie eventually finding happiness and love again. She finds her light; and so do you.
Before you read the summaryâ please read this. Free Palestine. Do not consume tlou fanfics without educating yourself about its zionist themes.
*SUMMARY: You had decided to give life one last try. That was it. After the events in The Last of Us Part II, Ellie decides that the only way to find peace is to turn herself in to the fireflies. She finds a lead; they tell her to find you, a young woman who wanders around with no purpose. When she eventually does, you refuse to tell her where the fireflies are; if she finds them, everything that you did in your past would've been for nothing.
You embark on a journey together, walking through rain, snow and through the darkest places this cruel world has to offer. What neither of you expect, broken and traumatized, is to find the light again in each other.
LINKS: read it here. playlist.
C.W/GENERAL TAGS: enemies to lovers, AFAB reader, eventual smut, gun violence, ellie kinda kidnaps you?, suicidal ideation (both ellie and reader), r! is wounded, PTSD and trauma, triggering flashbacks.
CHAPTER 1: One last try.
You encounter Ellie. She follows the trail of blood you were leaving. You refuse to give her the information she wants. So, she drags you through the entire state of Montana.
"Youâre bold for someone unarmed and bruised, with a gun pointed to their head"
CHAPTER 2: Courage, dear heart.
A small flame inside you ignites. you finally have a purpose; to mislead her, and to escape from her. You come up with a plan, and that involves earning her trust. just enough until she becomes sloppy. But you can't let her see your skills; she might see you as a threat. That plan quickly goes to waste when you encounter a large group of clickers.
âI could kill you right now,â she said, holding your own knife against your throat. Her knuckles were white from how much force she was using. Her features were almost unrecognizable.Â
âThen youâd break your promise,â you said.
âPromises mean nothing in this world.âÂ
CHAPTER 3: Or Christ, hold me like a knife. (wip)
"honey don't feed me, i will come back"

3 Important things about Traditional Publishing
This post is for people who want to be traditionally published. If youâre down to Indie publish, or are only interested in posting your own fiction onlineâdonât worry about it!
First things first, traditional (or trad) publishing is when you go through an editor at a publishing house and they publish your book. They also take a hefty percentage of the profits, but handle the editing, cover design, titling, promotion, etc. for you. Sometimes you may also go through a literary agent who will represent you (send your work and advocate for you) to publishing houses.
Indie publishing (independent) is when you do it on your own, also known as self publishing. You have more control, but have to build a team behind you to help you edit, design, format, promote, etc. (or do it all yourself). and it can be difficult to get your book in places like book stores and libraries since they usually only do dealings with publishing houses.
With that out of the way, letâs talk 3 important things I know about trad publishing.
1. Donât share your work online
If you want to be traditionally published, donât post any of your work online anywhere. Including little bits and pieces, including excerpts, including characters, including titles. Nothing. Keep it locked down.
This is because many trad publishing contracts will consider you posting your work online as it being âpreviously publishedâ, and may reject your work for that reason. To be on the safe side, donât put any of your work online or submit it to other journals/magazines.
2. Be prepared to let go of some of the decision making.
When you go through lit agents and publishing houses, you give up an amount of creative control to get your work published. They just want to make it as good (and marketable) as possible, so trust that they know what theyâre talking about.
This means they may choose your title, you may not have any control over the cover image, they might even ask you to get rid of a character or change the ending or any other amount of larger edits. You are allowed to reject some ideas, but choose your battles. Taking this feedback and making these edits is what will get your work published, so if that is your goal, be accommodating, trust that they have so much experience and will make your work better.
3. You should NEVER have to pay them
If youâre paying a traditional publisher to publish your work, you are being scammed. The money works this way:
The reader buys the book for say $20.
To make this simple, letâs say $20 then goes to the publishing house.
They take 50%, so $10 goes to your literary agent (if you have one).
They take another 50% so $5 goes to you.
Never, ever should the money be flowing the opposite direction where you are giving money to these businesses to publish your work. I will say it again, if you are paying these people, you are being scammed.
This is really important, because I knew a girl who was working three jobs to get her work published. They were asking for almost 20K. My heart absolutely breaks for herâshe just didnât know that thatâs not how itâs supposed to work.
Whether itâs 20k, $100, or 3 cents. You donât pay them.
(Of course, if youâre in indie publishing this is a whole different story. In indie, you pay people to do any of the work you donât want to do. If you need an indie editor, you pay them, if you want an artist to design your cover, you pay them. This rule only applies to trad publishing!)
Anything else important that I missed?

not to be a puritan or a prude or whatever but i feel like sometimes we forget about the fact that smut is fr just porn in a different medium. like iâll never condemn it like i do actual visual forms of porn bc itâs not unethical, but i wish there was more discussion surrounding the impacts of consuming high volumes of smut. like thereâs nothing *wrong* with reading and writing smut, but letâs not pretend that itâs not going to desensitize u! i donât think reading a little smut scene every once in a while is bad but if itâs all u readâŠu have a porn addiction! sorry!
