as someone who used to be god awful, a simple "that's fucked up, dude" can go a LONG way. shitty behavior is very often rewarded, to receive the exact opposite reaction is a slap of reality. the fact the your words can negatively impact people very strongly is something a lot of us know but have a hard time visualizing ourself in that position. people don't like looking at themselves as the bad guy so being looked at that way by others hurts. how often have they made people uncomfortable? how often did people avoid calling them out? it forces self reflection to call out bad behavior, it can be worth the discomfort. for both parties.
