Movies I've watched recently
But can't be bothered writing proper reviews for
Salt of the Earth
The one about the millionaire who disguises himself as a low paid worker at his own company to bust the union but ends up falling in love with one of his workers - pretty funny actually
The one about the guy who double loses his memory and his wife disguises herself as his secretary but he doesn't remember until the final moments of the film - sweet and melancholy despite a slow start
I've been watching True Detective and Taskmaster and half-watching The Boys

Mistress America (2015)
This movie was bad but fun. Everyone was incredibly annoying and the movie wasn't as smart as it thought it was. Not really helped by watching it at a 90 degree angle on a phone screen but also I'm glad I watched this rather than a better movie this way because there was less to ruin.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Lovely movie but it got very confused and wandered around for a bit too long.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988)
Really enjoyed this. Spanish is such a fast language and I was only barely keeping up with the subtitles but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I'd watch it again.

Adaptation (2002)
Loved it. Third favourite Kaufman movie after Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich because the final act was too scary and more fun than satisfying.

Cuban Fury (2014)
Was this a very good movie? No. Was it the perfect thing to have on in the background while your girlfriend tries and fails to dig tiny shards of glass out of her foot with various implements including a blunt scalpel and a cuticle trimmer? Yes.

The Full Monty (1997)
Wikipedia describes this as a black comedy. I think it's more like a comedic comedy. It's not very morbid except I guess the characters are poor. It was funny but fluffy.

The Angels' Share (2012)
I was talking about maybe doing my elective in Scotland so Isla put this on to test whether I can understand the accent. I loved this movie.

Woodenhead (2003)
Saw the new colourised version at NZIFF 2022. The director introduced it and the audience was largely cast and crew and friends, including me.
The film itself was, at best, pretty interesting and fun, and at worst, too slow paced. If you like avant garde cinema/weird shit then this is probably for you.

M*A*S*H | Seasons 4-11 (1975-1982)
I can't believe I watched 7 seasons of this show. At various times it was repetitive, predictable, heart-wrenching, extremely funny, cringe, sexist, feminist, racist, anti-racist, anti-war, pro-American, anti-American ... It had its moments. I wish its episode titles were a bit more descriptive because I can't even begin to tell you which episodes were the really good ones worth watching even if this show isn't your kinda thing.
It got a lot less sexist as the seasons went on. Margaret's character improved so much. It never fully dropped Pierce's casual cool guy sexism and half-heartedly criticised it at times. The addition of Winchester in I think season 5? 6? was a good move and he was one of my favourite characters. Colonel Potter, Winchester, Radar and Margaret Houlihan were definitely the best characters of the main cast played by the strongest actors, although I have a soft spot for Father Mulcahy. I never fully warmed to Pierce and BJ.
Overall this show is very consistently easy to watch and is at times extremely funny. It's comfort food.

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
Really really good 😭 Watched it firstly with my white cousins and girlfriend who all laughed really hard and bawled their eyes out with me. Watched it with my Asian friend Tom who did NOT get it. Told my Asian grandma and cousins to watch it and they did NOT like it. Still think it was really good despite a bloated second act. I'm glad they cast Michelle Yeoh instead of Jackie Chan in the lead as was the original plan - he wouldn't have worked as well in that role.
