Reflecting on one particular Case Report: The clinical microbiology story of a single gram-negative diplococci found in a blood culture bottle that lead to a 50+ year career in medical laboratory science. The clinical microbiology story changed the career direction of a hospital-based laboratorian!
It propelled the laboratorian into the fascinating world of public health and international health... fostering learning opportunities and connections with other laboratorians and public health professionals; using Brightfield and Darkfield Microscopy as valuable exploration tools; detecting and identifying microorganisms commonly associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs); instructing other medical laboratorians as well as public health, medical and healthcare professionals about the microbiology of STIs; conducting laboratory training in various regions of the USA as well as Turkey, Kenya, Uganda, and Egypt.; and much more.
Throughout the laboratorian's career, the clinical microbiology story of a single gram-negative diplococci in a blood culture bottle inspired and energized but was never forgotten (nor was the patient ever forgotten). The power of this clinical microbiology story changed the direction of the medical laboratory scientist aka Sally S. Cherry, MLS(ASCP). The medical laboratory science community has numerous clinical microbiology stories. Hence, the upcoming American Society for Microbiology journal, "ASM Case Reports" will indeed serve as an important clinical microbiology resource!

Thumbs up to WBAL-TV 11 Baltimore and Lisa Robinson for the recent coverage of the high school students from Baltimore City partner schools of Building STEPS visiting Sinai Hospital Of Baltimore to learn about medical laboratory science services and careers. With the critical shortage of medical laboratory professionals in the U.S., I am thrilled that the students had the opportunity to learn about some of the dedicated medical laboratory professionals and their lifesaving work within the medical laboratory science community.
✨ In addition, I was excited to learn about the amazing mission and success of Building STEPS (Science Technology And Education Partnerships Inc.) as it helps Baltimore City students become science and technology professionals. My excitement grew after learning that Building STEPS has increased the number of students earning a college degree and entering STEM and healthcare careers since its launch. The fact that nearly 80% of Building STEPS students earn a college degree is awesome! According to its website, Debra Hettleman, founder and CEO launched Building STEPS in 1999 with the purpose of creating a college pathway for underrepresented students to become STEM professionals. Now in 2024, the Building STEPS mission and work continue with amazing success! So awesome!
👍🏾 As an American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certified medical laboratory professional since 1975, I applaud and extend a "Thumbs Up" with a sincere "Thank you" to Debra Hettleman; and the Building STEPS team as well as the Building STEPS corporate and institutional partnerships. Sidebar: It was my high school Biology teacher and a "Day with Doctors" event in the early 60s that inspired me to pursue a career in medical laboratory science via Morgan State University and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. The Baltimore City students are indeed fortunate to experience the life-changing STEM programs, opportunities, and support provided by Building STEPS. As a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), I truly hope that the STEM experience will inspire more high (and college) students to pursue a career in medical laboratory science.
