so when I was like, seven, I had a classmate whose cousin was in Mary Poppins on Broadway (iirc she played Jane Banks?) and so my family went up from Florida to New York to see the play. We got the CD, and for MONTHS, my sister and I would listen to Mary Poppins in the car on loop. I memorized all the songs, even the ones that were just in the musical and not in the movie. I learned how to spell "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," which was probably the only thing I had going for myself in elementary school. I could probably still hear all the Mary Poppins songs now and know them by heart, even though I haven't listened to the Mary Poppins soundtrack or OBC in years.

So, keep that detail in mind. The fact that I heard those songs that many fucking times is important context for what I'm about to tell you. And again, keep in mind that I'm from Florida. That detail is also important.

It wasn't until a few years ago, probably when I was in my late teens, when I realized that the lyric in "Feed the Birds" is "all around the cathedral/the saints and apostles/look down as she sells her wares." Again, I had listened to that song over and over until I had it memorized. Since I was seven years old, and well into adolescence, I thought the lyric was "snakes and opossums," not "saints and apostles."

And I just. accepted it??? Snakes and opossums. All around a cathedral. In London. Staring at this lady while she tried to sell bird food. I just. I never questioned it. For years.
