reposting my challengers review here bc i wanna join in on the fun. also with every passing hour i love this movie more and more its giving me some crazy brain worms
start:
i went 🫢😯 several times in the theatre. really awesome story (& it was told in a very creative way) about 3 people who have a strong passion for tennis (& each other!!!!) i actually dont even think this movie is meant to be about tennis at all, i mean there are literally at least 3 parts of the movie where a character goes "are we talking about tennis?", the game of tennis is an analogy for love (or probably sex). and because tennis is used to tell the story ur also treated with some superr interesting shots, its never repetitive and as the movie goes the way its shot gets bolder and more intense. & the score is SO FUCKING GOOD like it really brings out this movies best parts and makes it feel so modern rlly idk how trent reznor and atticus ross do it...
also so many scenes were just soooo smart or just super hot (examples below)
1. the whole churro scene
2. art spitting out his gum into both of their hands in separate scenes
3. arts serving tick
4. "you're going to hate me for this" (paraphrasing)
5. tashi yelling (& i guess what that represents is her really connecting with a player, happens twice in the movie)
the ending caught me off guard but my weird interpretation of it is represents all 3 of them having an orgasm at the same time 🤯🎾 or they finally realized their potential as a throuple😌 great stuff i cant wait to watch it again
end (its also on letterboxd)
extra stuff below:
I HAVE TO SAY THIS AGAIN BUT THE SCORE GUYS. WOOWW as expected of trent reznor and atticus ross i mean the social network too was sexy in its own way
and people seem to be picking sides or whatever but i think theyre all very flawed ppl in their own way. it totally isn't relatable but it is realistic enough i mean considering their dynamic would u expect any of these characters to be flawless? that would be so boring

i absolutely love anatomy of a fall (2023) and the recognition its got but it rlly pisses me off that 'hot lawyer guy' and the dog r the most popular things about it instead of sandra and the message it told about family dynamics/marriage dynamics... sad!

pearl (2022)
I know i probably shouldve watched X first, but so many people prefer this movie to that and i wanted to watch smthn less horror-esque and more character study-ish today so thats what i did
it leans into some of the cheesy horror aspects but it totally works in this movie imo. theres something very satisfying about the way the womens struggles in this movie are presented, specifically pearls. it all kinda boils down to the fact that to be a woman is suffocating, pearl is expected to help her mom around the house and attend to her sick father when she would much rather go out and explore, or rather 'be a star'. Her environment has caused her to express her frustrations in the weirdest and most violent ways. additionally u cant help but feel bad for her mom too, bc she too is living an undesirable, and shes become cold as a result of her upbringing. its the universal immigrant parent experience you could say. pearl herself actually realizes this too (which i like, i think its a common feeling to kind of detest and at the same time understand your mother bc of the circumstances) but by the time pearl realizes this shes kinda far gone. i dont think theres an alternate fate for her mom in this movie, these frustrations were bound to come to a tipping point one way or another.
i guess i will watch X but i find it hard to believe i will find maxine as likeable as pearl, but i will check it out bc i want to watch maxxine

Recently Viewed: All About Lily Chou-Chou
Tumblr media
The protagonist of Shunji Iwai’s All About Lily Chou-Chou frequently claims that the eponymous (fictional) musician draws inspiration from a nebulously defined metaphysical plane called “The Ether.” This appellation perfectly matches the film’s stylized cinematography, which is best described as “ethereal.” The camera drifts, glides, and soars like a disembodied spirit listlessly observing a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Wide-angle lenses distort the frame, warping landscapes and twisting faces into grotesque caricatures. The color palette alternates between vibrantly saturated and drearily washed-out, but never comes close to resembling anything “naturalistic.” Overall, the imagery is less concerned with depicting an objective “reality” than it is with conveying a particular mood.
And that mood is relentlessly bleak and oppressive.
Tumblr media
Like the other movies screened for Japan Society’s recent Shunji Iwai retrospective, All About Lily Chou-Chou is most accurately classified as a coming-of-age story; rather than exploring a significant transitional period in the life of a single character (adolescence in Fireworks, early adulthood in April Story), however, it adopts a broader perspective, dissecting the pervasive disillusionment of Japan’s youth culture at the turn of the millennium. Childhood innocence seemingly no longer exists: classroom bullying often borders on outright organized crime, with social pariahs effectively forced into indentured servitude by their more sadistic and domineering peers. These ostracized outcasts retreat into online chatrooms, building digital communities that offer them some semblance of solace… but also further isolate them. Additionally, the inherent anonymity of such virtual relationships actually makes them more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
After all, who knows what secrets the person on the other side of the monitor might be hiding?
Tumblr media
Despite its challenging subject matter, All About Lily Chou-Chou is a captivatingly beautiful anarchic nightmare—haunting, hypnotic, and ultimately hopeful. I’m glad that I had the opportunity to experience it in a packed theater, projected in glorious 35mm; its sprawling visuals shouldn’t be confined to the claustrophobic screen of a television or laptop.

on period pieces
movies like these might be the best type ever? especially when done well, i think things like amadeus, the favourite and barry lyndon are some extreme examples of period pieces where u have everybody wearing the lush silks and boobs spilling out of corsets and such but you also have period pieces like boogie nights (1997) that was made in the 90s but takes place in the 1970s. it would be cool to see movies like that now where movies take place in say 2003 but we make the movie now in 2024.
when done well its so awesome its quite literally a blast from the past, i think the further back in history u go the more inaccurate you can be i mean in amadeus they were literally SPEAKING ENGLISH AND HAD AMERICAN ACCENTS even tho we know all of this happened in non-english europe!!! hilarious but god that movie is so fun it doesnt even matter

the graduate (1967)
i watched this from my bed, on my tiny little phone screen at 7 in the morning a few days ago (not the optimal way to watch a movie i know) and i loved it soooo much, i was trying to think about why i love it so much and in a weird way it's probably bc benjamin is somewhat relatable, especially cuz i too am in between key points in my life (undergrad and grad school) although i didnt go off and have an affair with a married women the feeling of not being sure what to do is so so so present and the way benjamin is stumbling around, figuring out what exactly he wants to do is kinda how i felt too this year. u try smthn new and u wonder if u liked it at all or if ur just doing this to waste the time away somehow.
i think my planning ability is definitely a lot better than bens, and i am def the type of person who is somewhat good at imagining their future but i did still feel acknowledged by this movie in a weird way. also considering its from 1967?? pretty timeless stuff
its also just very entertaining like the whole time ur like gosh what will happen next !!! and my god that ending is so good !! both elaine and benjamin r just like fuck.. now what?

all the presidents men....
I rewatched the movie about a week ago, started and read about half of the book, and just finished rewatching it again. I am just so enthralled and enamoured by the filmmaking, performances and the SCRIPT!!!! what a beautiful gorgeous funny smart and to the point script. its so punchy, it gets u there, theres so many lines of dialogue that you cannot believe are real (BUT THEY ARE!!! "i have a wife and a family and a dog and a cat!!!" you really cannot make that stuff up)
and forget that there are just some hilariously absurd details, like wdym one of woodwards key men for inside scoop was nicknamed "Deep Throat" which apparently was a pornographic film that came out around the time. Like a lot of cases with government investigations like these, the hush hush amongst folks is common, its depicted pretty much the same across the board. I guess whats different with this is it never overly dramatic (because they based it on real life events, so naturally it comes off as more believable) but it is interesting the story never has to embellish details to make it interesting. The dialogue is sharp enough and the audience gets carried through from lead to lead in a way that keeps it plenty engaing. I mean truthfully beneath the daunting list of names and the fact that it is (yawn, to some) American politics this scandal is so interesting!!! I mean the existence of the Canuck letter is particularly hilarious to me, i didnt quite catch the meaning of "slurred the canadians" until i looked up the canuck letter on wiki but wow. I cannot believe it
And god something about the 70s movies aesthetic.... i loved the click clack of the typewriters and the shuffling through news paper clippings, crinkling of notepads, scribbling pens, sound of the landline, you dont even need a soundtrack with all that. that IS the soundtrack, it sets the mood so perfectly. It's also just really nice to look at, the way this is shot is so beautifully (& at times, again SO SMART) Hoffman and Redford really really sell these roles, along with their cool fits and comforting voices inquiring over the phone, so weird to think that they made journalism look so cool...
#Woodstein is so good i love how these two set aside their journalistic and personal differences to meet on common ground which is their passion for this story !!!!!!!! also thinking about how they almost casted pacino to play bernstein is so interesting, and this is no insult to pacino but i do genuinely believe they casted this well in the end. apologies to me reading this tmr morning.. good night it is a little past 2 am.. and i love this movie dearly.. i can confidently coin it as The Social Network of my 20s
