A character who is so broken inside and wrought with turmoil, but they cannot let the mask slip lest everything that depends on them being alright crumbles around them

trapped in an emotional prison of their own making.

#honestly love these types of characters #the usually happy and calm one who stays positive throughout the narrative despite whatever they or the rest of the cast face and #it just adds more to them because sometimes people just see them as immature or infantalise them but the character is actually forcing them #elf to hold everything together and to be that pillar of hope for the rest of the cast because if not them then who? and they believe that #s soon as they drop the mask that everything will fall apart because then everyone else will know and everyone else will worry or get angry #or fight and they want to keep the peace and keep everyone safe and provide just that little bit of joy in a dark situation because thats w #en you'll most need it #so they force themself to always be positive but it is so exhausting and they need some rest but they need to do this. They need this. #this is who they are. If not for this they are nothing. #i just think it's neat

if i'm being absolutely completely totally honest i think that "it wasn't you" doesn't go far enough in absolving someone of the guilt of being the subject of a brainwashing or mind control plot. because at the end of the day, it was you. it was your body, your mind, potentially even your soul, being stripped of its autonomy, intimately violated and turned against you as much as anyone else. it's a kind of assault, and should be treated as such, especially in more mature narratives. i think that "it wasn't your fault" and "your shame at being made helpless and unable to control your own body and mind's involuntary responses is understandable, but you are not in any way irredeemable or unforgivable because of what was done to you" are also necessary reassurances. and i think that there should be lingering resentment in spite of words of forgiveness and miscommunication and long-term post-traumatic consequences also.

(context for the last one: discord server was discussing how funny it would be if all the doctors just spontaneously appeared in some way that referenced their regeneration story. so ten sleeps for 40 hours straight, they pull eleven out from the ground like a carrot, twelve crashes out of the closet ranting about dinosaurs, thirteen falls through the ceiling, etc)
