It is bittersweet to share my latest and the final “Art with a point” illustration to be printed in this Sunday's final edition of the @washingtonpostmag titled “Another COVID Christmas.” I hope Art with a point continues to publish online and in print somehow. • I wrote, “This is going to be my second Christmas going home for the holidays while covid is still affecting millions of people. A lot of family and friends have relaxed a lot when it comes to testing and masking, but I still find myself testing and masking before heading out the door. I love my family, and I just want to feel safe that we’re all safe.” • I started working on this illustration back in late October/early November. Since then, instead of my partner and I heading there, I bought my mom and sister Amtrak tickets and helped set them up in an Airbnb nearby. Still, my partner and I are going to be masked up and tested while they’re here. I hope everyone has a fantastic, safe holiday. • Many thanks to @bmferrill for the assignment. • #drawingwhileblack #editorialillustration #artwithapoint #narrativeillustration #art #danielfishel #ofishelillo (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmcmnx4raPA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TODAYS ELECTION DAY: Vote Democrat / @workingfamilies to prevent Republicans from taking away our rights (lgbtqia+, abortion), protections (union/labor), and benefits (social security, Medicare/Medicaid). #vote • 2022 is about holding the line and making gains in open seats. 2024, 2028, and 2032 will be about using a rank and file strategy to elect @demsocialists and progressive Dems who align with most of the policy positions of DSA up and down the ballot. No more wack candidates. • Click the link in my bio to learn more about the Rank and File Strategy. (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CktAUXAL8g8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here is a new illustration for @spotlightpennsylvania @phillyinquirer for an article titled “Thousands of older Pennsylvanians at risk of losing property tax rebates because of legislative inaction” • For the first time in decades, social security recipients received a increase in their monthly checks. Unfortunately for many older Pennsylvanians, an increase in social security means losing their property tax rebates that many have counted on to live. This happened because PA’s legislators haven’t updated the means testing to meet with inflation and rising wages. So now checks that could have gone to many of needy Pennsylvanians are out of reach because of social security increases and legislation inaction. • Swipe through to see a selection of sketches. Many thanks to @sarhutch for the assignment. • #conceptualillustration #editorialillustration #danielfishel #drawingwhileblack #illustration https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci3ZEcpLSHt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

@washingtonpost Outlook page, after nearly 70 years, printed its last edition this weekend. In the article titled “Farewell to Outlook, and nearly 70 years of essays, arguments and criticism” Robert G. Kaiser and Steve Luxenberg wrote: “A few weeks ago, The Washington Post informed subscribers by email that “the essays and analysis appearing in Outlook will now be found exclusively in Opinions in the A section and online.” Befitting the mission that the section eventually embraced — to interpret and witness and seek out unheard voices, and perhaps help Post readers make a little more sense of the world — Outlook will end its run by telling its own story.” • I’ve been fortunate to grace the cover of Outlook a few times. My favorite illustration I’ve done for Outlook is a conceptual pastiche illustration of Robert Mueller as the archangel Michael. Many thought he was the one who would take down Donald Trump. Many believed we would finally have justice served for all of his alleged crimes. Instead, he presented his findings and disappointed the faithful. • This illustration was for the March 31, 2019 edition of the Washington Post Outlook page. • #editorialillustration #conceptualillustration #design #wapo #washingtonpost (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiqR7OOOft4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here’s a new illustration for @postopinions for a piece titled “Drug pricing reforms can hurt innovation. Here are 3 ways to prevent that.” • “Pharmaceutical innovations play a key role in improving the health and longevity of Americans, as illustrated by the much faster-than-expected rollout of coronavirus vaccines and therapeutics. And despite provocative claims to the contrary, policies that reduce pharmaceutical revenues will mechanically lower the return from developing new drugs. That’s why we should offset drug price negotiations with new ways of funding and incentivizing biomedical innovation.” • Swipe through to see a selection of sketches. Many many thanks to @chrisrukan for the assignment. • #editorialillustration #conceptualillustration #drawingwhileblack #illustration #editorialart #opinionart #biomedical (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChmfA0vucyG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
