The African Grey Parrot is native to the equatorial regions of Africa, including the nations of Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. The species' favored habitat is dense forests, but it is also frequently found at the edges of forests and in open savanna areas. As of 2016, the African Grey Parrot is listed as an endangered species. Numbers of Greys in the wild continue to decline due to habitat destruction and extreme levels of pet trading (highest of any wild bird according to CITES). Though steps have been taken to reduce the trading of wild African Greys, the problem is still rampant across many countries outside the US and Europe; where the trade has been banned. Regional extinctions are being recorded across Africa from Tanzania to Rwanda and Uganda in what is known as the "African Silence."
