Some Motivation

Tommy Shelby

Warnings: none

(Y/N) lets Tommy know that he’s doing exactly what he’s supposed to be.

Tommy stood at the front side of his desk. He’d just come back from a meeting and was feeling the pressures of everyone’s expectations weighing down on him. Piles of papers were scattered around his desk. He didn’t know what he should do first. Instead of making any moves to get started on it, he rested his hands on the desk and let out a sigh.

He was so encompassed by the thoughts in his head that he didn’t hear the office door open, or the footsteps coming his way. He tensed up at the feeling of arms encirling his torso, and was about to act when he looked down and saw the glimmer coming from the wedding ring that he immediately recognized as (Y/N)’s. How could he forget the ring he’d shakily placed onto her finger a handful of years ago now? He offered many times to buy her a newer, bigger, one, but each time she refused. Another sigh escaped his lips, this one of content, as he felt her rest her cheek against his shoulderblades.

“That could’ve been dangerous, love,” he remarked, his hands dropping to gently hold onto her wrists as she hugged him tightly.

“I’ll take my chances with you, Tom,” she whispered back, not making any moves to let go of him. Instead of trying to break out, Tommy accepted the hug and let her stay pressed against his back. “You seemed stressed after that meeting,” she commented after a few quiet moments had passed.

“There’s a lot on my plate,” he answered her, his eyes falling onto the piles of papers again. I should get started on them, he thought. “A lot of people are coming to me; needing me to do things.”

“You’ll get them done in due time,” she assured him, craning her head upwards so that she could nuzzle her face into his neck. His scent immediately overcame her senses, and she let out a content sigh as she breathed it in. He always smelt like home.

“Maybe I’ve taken on more than I can handle,” he said after a few more moments had passed.

This sentence made (Y/N) lift her face from his neck and finally unwrap her arms from his middle. This allowed Tommy to turn and face her. He was only able to hold her gaze for a moment before he looked to the ground. (Y/N) pursed her lips as she studied his features. It was obvious that he was stressed; that he was overwhelmed by the amount of work that needed to be done, and she couldn’t help but feel slightly happy at the fact that he was willing to show her these emotions. He usually kept them bottled up and close to the chest.

“I don’t think you have,” she said to him, her voice making him look up again, “you know what you can handle. You’ve dealt with much more before, and you’ve came out of that successful. This time will be the same,” she assured him, hoping that her little speech would spark some motivation within him. He said nothing in response to her pep talk, the solemn expression still lingering on his features. “I could help you with the papers, if you’d want,” she offered then.

“You wouldn’t want to be dealing with that,” Tommy was quick to point out.

“You’re right, I wouldn’t…” (Y/N) responded, not masking her true feelings. She hated doing paperwork of any sort, but it was part of the nature of the job, “but I’d do it for you. Anything to take some of the weight off of your shoulders,” she ended her statement with a smile.

Tommy tried his hardest not to let the smile break through onto his straight faced expression. He knew he was lucky to have (Y/N) in his life, but it was days like today, and moments like this, that just hammered that sentiment home. “I’ll give you the papers I’m finished with…to make sure that they check out,” he told her the plan, and she nodded before grabbing one of the chairs facing his desk so that she could drag it around to where his chair was.

They both sat down and got to work; Tommy filling out the papers and (Y/N) checking over them. Time went by quietly for a bit before Tommy stopped and looked at (Y/N). Feeling his eyes on her, she also stopped to look at him.

“What?” she asked, her eyebrows raised.

“Thanks for this,” he told her, his words coming out quietly.

But she heard them loud and clear. “You’re welcome,” she smiled at him, the expression alone telling Tommy that he shouldn’t be worrying so much about all of this. Things would be ok.

It was the hottest day of the year, the air was dry but you were soaked in sweat. The open windows in the house did nothing to aid you, in fact it made you hotter. There was no breeze, the only thing you were thankful for was the cloudy Birmingham sky shielding you from the rays of sunlight. You sat in the kitchen of your home, fanning yourself with the morning paper when your husband Arthur walks in, still wet from his bath. He walked over towards you in his towel, leaving wet marks on the floor with every step, grabbing the paper from your hands before sitting down.

“Are ya alright?” He asks, unraveling the paper and turning towards you he begins to fan you himself.

“Hell has come to scorch the earth today Arthur, I'm dying” you sigh, slumping down into the chair, feeling the air rush onto your face as you wipe the sweat from your brow.

“It’s bloody hot” he exclaims “you should hop right on into the bath”

You gasp dramatically, flinging your hand up over your mouth “Are you saying I stink?” 

“Ya do, ya smell bloody disgusting (Y/N), you nasty thing you” He chortled “I’m just messin with ya, the cold water will do ya some good”

“Only if you wash my hair for me, I like the way you do it” You stood up, grabbing his hand and pulling him up towards you. He caresses your cheek, the hair on your head stuck to your face with sweat, he pushes it up out of your face and gently kisses your forehead. 

“Well then love, let's get ya cooled down” He smirked, picking you up and leading you towards the washroom. It might be hellish outside, but with Arthur, it’s always heaven.

Arthur cares a lot about animals-  chickens are his favorite and I think overall he has a soft spot for birds

Modern! Arthur would have a parrot that he names “Patchy” and he thinks it’s hilarious to let Patchy out of his cage when theres guests over 

He doesnt tell anyone he’s letting the bird out he just does it

He also likes to say swear words infront of the parrot and hopes one day the parrot will imitate him 

One day Patchy does imitate him- Arthur comes home after a long day at work and sits on the couch, he begins to rant about his day:

Arthur: “Ah fuck Patchy, Tommy’s a bloody idiot”

Patchy: “ Aw fuck, Tommy’s an idiot”

He thinks its the funniest thing to ever happen- He keeps trying to record it to send in the family groupchat

Modern! Arthur also runs an instagram meme page with John

It’s really not that funny- it’s like early 2010 memes and the main demographic is like 35-60 year old men

They surprisingly have a lot of followers though, enough to get hate comments- the hate comments are Finn and Isiah on anonymus accounts, Esme eventually joins in too because John keeps showing her the memes before they post them and it’s a nightmare.

Arthur gets really mad about it, like he’s seething- at every family function he rants about the anon haters on his meme page. It’s really hard for Finn and Esme to hold back laughter

Arthur becomes obsessed with boxing after seeing Bonnie Gold fight

He's fought before in the ring and it does not go well as we all know- He starts to take a more passive role once he realized how out of hand he gets when he fights himself

He goes to every single fight he can- If theres two fights happening on his day off he will be at both of them in the front row cheering on his favorite fighter

Random Ada Thorne Headcanons

When Ada was a teenager she would babysit for the neighboring families

At first nobody would hire her due to her being a Shelby- they were worried about her name rubbing off on the children or they would be in danger by association under Ada’s watch

She understands them not wanting to be associated with a Shelby, so she doesnt tell her family members she was turned away.

When a new family moved into a home on Watery Lane Ada saw this as an opportunity to get a fresh start and goes over to introduce herself, and tell them if they ever needed help watching their children to get in touch with her.

The family accepts and Ada does such an amazing job

She gets the kids in bed without a fuss and the next morning all they can talk about is how much fun they had with Ada

So she’s asked to return again the next weekend

When the family finds out she’s a Shelby, they dont really care

The sitters they had in the past just could not compare to Ada’s care of and for the children 

This prompts the other neighbors to ask for Ada to come watch their children as well

Ada is a book worm

She loves romance novels

Ada and Polly even start somewhat of a secret book club together where they meet over tea and discuss the stories they’ve read

Nobody knows about it but them

Michael walked in on it once but was too pre-occupied to care so now they meet at Ada’s because Polly doesnt want anyone to know she reads anything other than the paper

Ada cannot bake- she tries but she ends up just burning it or undercooking it

She’s also terrible at measuring out ingredients- she eyeballs it

When Karl comes along she tries to bake him muffins and cookies but it ends in smoke

So she hires a baker to come teach her- she wants to be the one to do it for her son

Random Alfie Solomons Headcanons:

Alfie is a foodie! He will take any opportunity to go out to a nice restaurant and have a good meal

I also see him cooking a lot- he likes to find new recipes and try them out while also sticking to recipes that have been in his family for years! Sometimes he’ll tweak them a little just to see if he can make it his own.

When he does try out new recipes he will always ask the person he trusts the most (you) to taste test it for him! He trusts you to be honest with him and genuinely wants to know what he can do better for next time.

If you love it he gets all excited and giddy, he’ll make it for you whenever you ask- for Alfie, food is the way to his heart!

Modern! Alfie would have a Pinterest board with a bunch of random recipes he would love to make one day (it has well over 300 pins)

Alfie would be interested in Philosophy- I see him contemplating the meaning of life at least once a day! He also believes the best questions are the ones without a true answer.

He can go on for hours honestly and likes to see what others think- but if he sees no logic in their thinking he will go out of his way to make whoever said it feel dumb.

Unless he has a soft spot for them- then he will try to press them to explain further. Particularly on why they think that way- he finds it interesting.

Alfie is a collector- he has an eye for antiques and other nicknacks and after he acquires them he displays them like trophies

His shelves are full of random artifacts he’s collected throughout the years

The more expensive things he has locked up safe- family heirlooms, jewels, historical artifacts he won’t show these to anyone unless he trusts you fully

Modern! Alfie would love romcoms

He would never admit it though

The first time you ask him to watch one with you he would be like:

“Oi! Turn this shit off”

But then once he gets into it he’ll start making little comments about the couple in the movie- like at the climax when the couple gets into an argument or before they realize they love each other

“She’s in love with you, you bloody idiot! I tell you what, yeah? If i were there i’d punch him right in his face until he wakes the hell up!”

He would absolutely cry at the end but he’d excuse himself the bathroom to do it- no way would he be seen crying over a movie.

Alfie loves animals! We know Cyril, but if Alfie saw an animal abandoned out on the street, he’d leave some food for them.

If the animal kept showing up he would have to talk himself out of simply just picking it up and bringing it home.

He would eventually but has to stop after a point because his house is turning into a zoo, he would never leave an animal to suffer however- he would find them a good home if he couldn’t bring them in himself.

Random Alfie Solomons Headcanons:

Alfie is a foodie! He will take any opportunity to go out to a nice restaurant and have a good meal

I also see him cooking a lot- he likes to find new recipes and try them out while also sticking to recipes that have been in his family for years! Sometimes he’ll tweak them a little just to see if he can make it his own.

When he does try out new recipes he will always ask the person he trusts the most (you) to taste test it for him! He trusts you to be honest with him and genuinely wants to know what he can do better for next time.

If you love it he gets all excited and giddy, he’ll make it for you whenever you ask- for Alfie, food is the way to his heart!

Modern! Alfie would have a Pinterest board with a bunch of random recipes he would love to make one day (it has well over 300 pins)

Alfie would be interested in Philosophy- I see him contemplating the meaning of life at least once a day! He also believes the best questions are the ones without a true answer.

He can go on for hours honestly and likes to see what others think- but if he sees no logic in their thinking he will go out of his way to make whoever said it feel dumb.

Unless he has a soft spot for them- then he will try to press them to explain further. Particularly on why they think that way- he finds it interesting.

Alfie is a collector- he has an eye for antiques and other nicknacks and after he acquires them he displays them like trophies

His shelves are full of random artifacts he’s collected throughout the years

The more expensive things he has locked up safe- family heirlooms, jewels, historical artifacts he won’t show these to anyone unless he trusts you fully

Modern! Alfie would love romcoms

He would never admit it though

The first time you ask him to watch one with you he would be like:

“Oi! Turn this shit off”

But then once he gets into it he’ll start making little comments about the couple in the movie- like at the climax when the couple gets into an argument or before they realize they love each other

“She’s in love with you, you bloody idiot! I tell you what, yeah? If i were there i’d punch him right in his face until he wakes the hell up!”

He would absolutely cry at the end but he’d excuse himself the bathroom to do it- no way would he be seen crying over a movie.

Alfie loves animals! We know Cyril, but if Alfie saw an animal abandoned out on the street, he’d leave some food for them.

If the animal kept showing up he would have to talk himself out of simply just picking it up and bringing it home.

He would eventually but has to stop after a point because his house is turning into a zoo, he would never leave an animal to suffer however- he would find them a good home if he couldn’t bring them in himself.

Who was Bonnie Gold? Someone might say that one kid boxer, another may say the one who got caught up with the Peaky Blinders, but to you? Bonnie Gold was your best friend–even if you wished to replace “best” with “boy”.

He was the sweetest boy ever, always willing to let someone take his place in line if they needed it. “I’m strong enough to wait longer–” He’d say. It was refreshing to see a young man so kind and giving.

Which is why it didn’t surprise you when he didn’t protest when you grabbed half of the blanket wrapped about his shoulders and tucked into his side. Bonnie was the affectionate kind anyway, it wasn’t unusual for you two to be connected at the hip.

“What’s wrong?” He asked.

“It’s cold.” Your hands were icy as you blew hot air on them and stretched toward the fire, “You’re really warm.”

Bonnie chuckled, “And you’re cold as ice.”
