This is such and absolute banger of an idea!!

Listening to someone else watch the original ATLA again, just starting season 3, and there's this line where Aang suggests that it didn't just look like he died, but he DID actually die and Katara brought him back. And look, I don't know much about the lore introduced by TLOK, but this sounds like a really fun place to start an AU inspired by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"'s take on the temporary death and resurrection of a cyclical chosen one: Aang is brought back to life and is STILL the Avatar, but his temporary death still also causes another Avatar to be born into the Southern Water Tribe (or Swamp People or refugees on some southern island, whatever).

Like, I know the Avatar is a reincarnation thing, but weird things can happen with spirits! Maybe this glitch in the cycle causes the spiritual equivalent of mitosis to happen to the Avatar and the spirit attached to them, so there's just two of them now! Maybe having two Avatars has some spiritual downsides, maybe not, it's up to whatever path you choose to explore in this AU.

I just think it would be really funny for post-canon 24yo Aang (and the Gaang and the White Lotus and all the spiritual / religious orders on the planet) to suddenly be confronted with a 10yo water tribe kid who is ALSO the Avatar.

A water tribe couple shuffle awkwardly up to Sokka, like, "Sooooo... we think our 10 year old daughter might be the Avatar...? She can, uh, bend all the elements and all that. Look at this shit." And Sokka is like, "Fuck, Aang is dead?!" Before he's like, "Wait, I saw Aang last week, this kid is way too old?!" And he has to hastily contact Aang like, "Hey, buddy, you're still alive, right?" And Aang can only reply, "Uhhh, last I checked, yes?!?!"

It's probably Sokka and Katara who put the pieces of the timeline together and figure out what caused this, because all of the other Avatars are probably initially like, "Yeah, I have no idea what's happening here. I'm you and you're me, but I'm also her and she's also me, and you and her are kind of the same person, but you're obviously different people now? Wow! Good luck figuring all that out, kid! You're really going places none of us have gone before! A real groundbreaker!"

Aang, through gritted teeth, "I am really not TRYING to do that, thank you!"

i was scrolling through your acc and saw your post about being bad at writing angst...i've only read one of your fics (heart on the mend) but i would definitely say it's an angsty one and i think it's really well done!! when sokka is going through it i can feel it in my chest. him bathing like 3 times a day broke my little heart!!

i will say that i experienced something similar with my own writing and that it happened when i practiced enough to get better and looked back or when i can picture something in my head but dont know how to put into words. it's sooooo frustrating. just remember you're your worst critic and you're not as bad as you think you are. Or at least that's what helped me a bit❤️

I’m overjoyed to hear you love Hearts on the Mend and have found it to be a good level of angst. I guess I just second guess myself, but maybe that’s just a part of being any sort of creator. You want to do better, to continue to improve, and sometimes you just feel lacking. It’s rough!!

Hello! Thank you for reading Hearts on the Mend and letting me know you want to see some from Zuko’s perspective. I tend to really stick to a singular perspective in my fics because unreliable narrator is a great plot device for angsty situations. But I can see where you might wish for at least a little crumb of another perspective just to keep you in hope that things will work out!

Perhaps I will do a re-write later from Zuko’s side of things. I know if I can get out of my rut and finish How to Seduce Your Husband I was planning on writing a companion piece through Sokka’s eyes, but I hadn’t thought of doing that for Hearts on the Mend.

Would you like me to try and give you a lil something from Zuko’s side of things from Hearts on the Mend? Prolly not a full chapter, but just a lil taste of his side?

But!! Thank you for taking the time to read Heaven Sent/Hellbent! It’s a project that’s very dear to my heart. Piandao/Zuko is a lovely ship that deserves so so so so so much more than we currently have. I want to keep going with it, and I plan to!! But I ran into a snag and started doubting myself, but hopefully I can work through the knot of my worry in time and return to it.

Hey how you doing! Are you still updating Hearts on the Mend or is it abandoned?

Hey I’m dying (not really but I’m having health issues and they’re very rough especially after how much I’ve had to work lately.)

Not to worry tho! Hearts on the Mend is NOT!!! abandoned. I still have a lot I want to do with that fic. I’m just…. struggling. As one does when they live in a capitalist hellscape and are experiencing health issues.

Maybe if I manage to get to take time off from work while healing I’ll get a chance to write some. I’ve been wanting to jump back in, but basically since my boss went on maturity leave in August I’ve been having to pick up slack, then once he was back the holidays hit, and then we lost a lot of people as often happens during the busiest time of year. Basically everything that could have gone wrong… did. You don’t ever discount Murphy’s Law coming in from backstage with a steel chair!

Ahhh anyway… thank you for taking a moment to check in. I have a few more asks I should respond to that I’ve been sitting on, thinking I’ll manage to get things rolling again sooner than later. But for now, hopefully this gives you some hope for the story continuing in the future. :3

I feel like I’m at a precipice right now when it comes to my writing. I’m having an epiphany and I don’t like it. I hate it I hate it I hate it!!

I’m… bad at writing angst. I really cannot do it justice. But so many of my fics hinge on being these angst sad things that Get Better by the end but man… the payoff will never be good enough. Because I can’t make my characters truly miserable the way I want to.

I’m bad at this and it’s so obvious.

So You Want To Write Fanfic

here are 10 quick tips for making that good fic, or at least making your fic look good

Tag and Bag: if your fanfic needs tags make them good, make them accurate, and don’t talk in them. You want to make it as easy as possible to attract readers. Tags on fanfic are for sorting not communicating, you have an entire fic’s worth of author’s notes for that

Bait, Hook, and Reel: your summary and title is what sells a reader after they’ve finished tag sorting. The part of the spear that you sharpen is the tip, the rest just has to hold together long enough to follow through

Apologize for NOTHING: all creators are self-conscious, we all feel shades of anxiety and embarrassment about our work. But if you don’t think your work is good, why should anyone else read it? Everyone starts somewhere

Bad Epithet, No Biscuit: kill this idea. Whether calling a boy with dark hair “the raven” or a character’s blue eyes ‘cerulean orbs’ don’t. Just don’t. Use names and pronouns because they are easier for readers to follow

An Ounce of Prevention: DO SOME RESEARCH! Every time you get something wrong in your story you lose at least one reader who knows better. You don’t need to be an expert, you just need to know enough to bluff your way through

Grammar U: grammar is about communication, where you put your comma to splice your run-on sentence is not nearly as important as framing dialogue correctly. It’s a readability issue. Grammar serves you and the reader, not the other way around

Cliché This: know ‘em, avoid ‘em or spin ‘em around until they’re flipped and fresh. Check TVtropes for specifics on your fandom

A Chuckle Darkly: think about the phrases you write. Does it make sense or just sound cool? It’s not a zero-sum game, but making sense is always the more important thing

Floridly Prosaic Mosaics of Prose: writing prettily is not a substitute for story. It’s easy to write florid prose, you can tell by how everyone does it. But only a few do it well enough to merit the distraction from reading a story

Pay It Forward: you like good fic? You want more good fic? Then be a good e-citizen, leave kudos and comments, be constructive, contribute meaningfully and critically to your fandom, and above all have fun! Also you should probably reblog this
