Hello ~
Just came across your post about Paul and Jim (pretty interesting!) and saw the part about Mal's death. Could you elaborate on that please?
I saw somewhere before that "something" had happened to him but I never looked for more..
Hello. Here are bits about Mal’s death in Many Years From Now:
The first member of the Beatles’ inner circle to die - after Brian Epstein - was their roadie and bodyguard Mal Evans, who was shot to death by police in his rented duplex at 8122 West 4th Street in Los Angeles on the night of 4 January 1976. His life had been defined by his relationship with the Beatles and when the band broke up, Mal not only had nothing to do but seemed to lose his identity. He separated from his wife Lil, who reportedly had asked for a divorce shortly before Christmas.
Mal moved to Los Angeles, where he lived with his new girlfriend Fran Hughes and worked on the manuscript of his memoirs, Living the Beatles Legend, which he was supposed to deliver to his publishers, Grosset and Dunlap, on 12 January. The evening of the 4th Mal had been so despondent that Fran Hughes called John Hoernie, Mal’s collaborator on the book, and asked him to come over. Hoernie said he found Mal crying, 'really doped up and groggy'. Mal told him, ‘Please make sure you and Joanne [Lenard, Hoernie's assistant on the book] finish the book.' Mal and John Hoernie went to an upstairs bedroom and in the course of Mal's incoherent conversation, he picked up an unloaded 30.30 rifle. A scuffle ensued, but Mal was a big, powerful man and Hoernie was unable to take the weapon away from him.
Fran telephoned the police and told them, 'My old man has a gun and has taken Valium and is totally screwed up.' Four cops arrived shortly afterwards and two of them, David D. Krempa and Robert E. Brannon, went to the upstairs room. According to the police report, when Mal saw the police officers he turned and pointed the rifle at them. Lieutenant Charles Higbie of the LAPD robbery and homicide division said, 'Officers directed him to put down the rifle. He refused to put down the rifle.' The cops fired six shots at him, four of which struck Mal, killing him instantly. Mal was an honorary sheriff of Los Angeles County.
PAUL: 'Mal was a big lovable bear of a roadie; he'd go over the top occasionally, but we all knew him and never had any problems. Had I been there I would have been able to say, "Mal, don't be silly." In fact, any of his friends could have talked him out of it without any sweat, because he was not a nutter.'
I don’t know what exactly happened on that occasion, still I find Paul’s defense kind of ridiculous - a guy who took advantage of girls who wanted to see the Beatles and used to put a gun against his girlfriend’s head doesn’t sound like a big lovable bear to me. He just didn’t treated Paul the same way he treated those girls, and Paul, beyond all doubt, never thought treating women like shit is a problem.

It is often said that Peter Asher and Paul were pretty close. Ironically, Paul's biography Many Years From Now, written by Peter's friend and co-founder of Indica Bookshop Barry Miles not always spoke well of him.
Peter and Gordon spent two years circulating tapes to record companies, trying to make a name for themselves, but to no avail - until Paul began going out with Jane. Then record companies suddenly became very interested indeed.
[...]
Peter and Gordon were to tour America and Japan at the height of the British invasion which followed in the wake of the Beatles' success. Peter became in every respect a famous pop star, with groupies and girls jumping off balconies, a house in the country and a £50 a week allowance from his management, Noel Gay Artists. It was everything he could have wanted except for the tempering effect of having a member of the Most Famous Group on Earth living the next room.
Outside the front door were always a dozen or so Beatles fans, and they were not there for Peter. 'Oh, it's only Peter,' they would mutter as he got out of a cab. It was very galling for him.
That's probably true but I don't think he would allow such thing include in his book if this is about himself or his family. Although topic involved Jane may be sensitive in this book, Ashers are not entirely downplayed or excluded from it. On the contrary, there's a particular section describing Paul's life in Ashers home, which is basically something nice about the family.
None of those commets are directly from Paul himself, though he didn't bother to ask Barry Miles to take it out either. Maybe he agreed with that too or maybe he couldn't care less.

Two years earlier, Mike McCartney, then aged 60, had been accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old waitress during a party at a pub near his Cheshire home. The young woman claimed he’d groped her from behind while requesting more tempura prawns; he said he’d touched her merely in ‘a fatherly gesture of thanks’. Seventeen months passed before Mike’s trial took place at Chester Crown Court, in February 2006. After three days, the judge halted the proceedings, ruling that sexual assault had not been proved, and castigating the Crown Prosecution Service for wasting public money on the case and for the long delay before the hearing. Acquitted ‘without a stain on his exemplary character’, Mike kept up his tradition of close-mouthedness about Paul, simply thanking ‘my big brother, who has been a rock of support during this attempt to soil our family’s name’.

Hours later, when the track was down amd John and Yoko had recorded the chorus, chanting, as per her instrustions, the four words "ONE WORLD, ONE PEOPLE," over and over again as a possible ending to the album, Cummings asked if his group might thank the Lennons with a song. Afterwords, John expressed his own appreciation to the group and personally made sure an assistant had the correct spelling of its name for album credits. He accepted kisses and handshakes as the entourage left the studio. Of course there was the requisite question. One of the singer asked, "How's Paul?" John amiably laughed, "Paul who?"

Have you seen those pictures on Beatles bible taken of little Mary and Heather in the early 70’s by some babysitter fans? Apparently Lin and Paul would casually leave heather and mary with fans while they went out? The girls talk about how filthy they would leave the kids and how protective heather was his her little sister. Guess the 70’s we’re different times.
I think I found the article you're talking about. Is it really reassuring to leave two kids under the age of ten at home? Unbelievable.
It also presents McCartney children (Heather and Mary) as humans, (even if they were rather small at the time), which had always been cautiously hidden behind layers of pr image. Heather's loathing of chores and touring are quite lively although I don't know how much we can trust a nine-year-old girl saying she smoked pot and got hit at least once a day for not doing chores (including making dinner😮). However, the experiences resemble Linda's woes of doing housework she didn't want to do and being hit "once or twice" during her marriage (according to a tape we never heard, though). I hope more details pop up to let us know what was Paul and Linda look like as parents. BTW, Heather got to know balls by having fathers reminds of what Paul once said that he used to be naked around his kids.
I'd say Heather looks patronising to fans despite how she had been treated at home (if she was telling the truth). The Mick Jagger bit harshly reminds us that she's not one of us.
She said Ruth, Paul’s step sister was in love with David Cassidy and her favorite idol was Mick Jagger. Someone asked if she ever saw him, and she said, “Are you kidding? Mommy and I knew him real well in New York. She photographed him.”

'After Stu, I liked John and George. Then I liked Pete Best. I liked him very much, but he was so very very shy. He could be funny, but I didn't have much contact with him. Even in those days one tended to forget him. He was on his own really. 'Paul, I found hard to get close to. He was always friendly. He was by far the most popular with the fans. He always did the talking and announcing and the autograph bit. Most fans looked upon him as the leader. John of course was the leader. He was by far and away the strongest. I don't mean physically, but as a personality. 'Stu was the most intelligent one. I think they all agreed on that. John did. 'George, we never thought about George's intelligence one way and another when we were talking about them. We knew he wasn't stupid, but he was just such a young lovely boy. He was so sweet and open about everything, like admiring the ham sarnies. He had a great following. Jurgen used to have a notice which said "I Love George". He was one of the first to do that sort of thing.

You think jane asher will ever release an autobiography about her youth ? Puzzles me why she doesnt ever speak about her time with paul/ early career/ 1960’s. Personally, for someone who was so focused on their acting career it didnt seem very successful.
Who knows? Maybe we'll see it tomorrow or maybe we'll never see it at all. Personally I doubt Jane, who guards her privacy and has limited interest for attention would trade Paul/Beatles story for publicity. For someone who said mentioning Paul is insulting to her, it doesn't seem that she's let it all go after all these years. The thing she chooses to do is not talk about it at all, I guess.

The entire early timeline with Linda and Paul is very confusing? Paul claims it was love at first sight but their early history begs to differ? Also why did they rush into it so quick? Between meeting again, Linda’s pregnancy and their wedding all in one year. Also do you believe the story with Maggie about Paul having cold feet the night before? Honestly you are the BEST at researching this information!
You mean he was still dating Jane and even proposed to her after ran into Linda in Bag O’Nails? Yeah, he wouldn't have to select another woman to marry from whom he'd had a relationship with if Jane didn't dump him. Despite enjoying being a bachelor, Paul was eager to get married to begin a traditional family life he always crave for around late 60s, as we can see tons of quotes that Linda hesitated but Paul twisted her arm and finally she agreed to marry him. The story he was crying in Maggie's place two days before wedding reminds me of the big argument Paul and Linda had the night before they got married. Apart from Linda's hesitation, it's a rather stressful time for Paul to go through, like - his relationship with his bandmates was so intense that he didn't even break the news to them. It's foreseeable that the sudden marriage would worse the situation. As a matter of fact, it did.

Love your blog! I’m kinda new so if you answered this already I’m sorry! Okay, so how honest is Paul when he says that he only spent one night(or week?) apart from Linda? I recall a couple of instances where Jane ran into Paul after their split and Maggie McGivern ran into Paul during the holidays? Is it just an image he’s trying to keep? Thank you! :)
Yeah, he said several times that he and Linda never spent a single night apart except for one enforced absence (the Japanese imprisonment), which is hard to believe. I also doubt its truthfulness but evidence hard enough to disprove it haven't popped up, yet. He did run into Jane and Maggie years later but neither of these two encounters suggested anything beyond short exchanges. The closest thing I've ever found is a rumor that there were a couple of occasions during the marriage when Linda took flight from Paul after one of their rows and returned a couple of days later, though it cannot be proved, I guess.
Whether it's true or not, the thing for sure is that Paul is not unaware of the perfect marriage image that emerge to the public. On the contrary, he is the one - not the media who tried hard to push it until he started his second and third marriage.

look, I agree that Paul is a chauvinist and that those “theories” are gross. but saying that it’s inarguable that the thing he values most about women is their ability to breed is a little much. like, I’m not saying it’s an impossibility but it’s definitely arguable.
Fine, you are entitled to your opinion. I won't deny that he is attacted to women of wealth, rank and personality. Instead of trophy one, he likes giving his wives the appearance of intelligence and independence. But based on what I knew of him, none of these could top his foundness for praising women - women who have given birth, including a female journalist who came to interview him and Heather Mills, the most evil person in Paul stans eyes, as good mothers. His obsession with girls in their summer clothing, the exact words he agreed to include in his book, was relate to a booklet called 'From Conception to Birth'. If you open any of his book or interview, I can guarantee you that most remarks involving women - including but not limited to Linda and Margaret Asher, are about family, good mother and the role of traditional housewife. Even the Queen could described by him as mumsy. I'm pleased Jane had a narrow escape from the sphere for not giving him a baby.
BTW, this conclusion is virtually supported by his fan for saying he respected women by giving the most compliments to mothers lol.

Have you seen the magazine article where Paul makes a comment about women being closer to nature because of their periods? It’s reminded me a lot of the playboy interview where a lot of what was written was kind of unsettling and chauvinistic. The article’s from 1984, a year before the playboy interview.

Hello anon, thank you for sharing this article. I found it here:

Yeah, the compliment he came up with actually sounds cringey. As the journalist pointed out, Paul doesn't understand women, nor does he bother to figure out. He seems to be quite proud of such a theory that, as far as I know, it was brought up again on another interview 14 years later:
I think that the fact that women give birth gives them a better connection to the universe than men. God bless them, men are lovely and you can’t make babies without them, I’m proud to be one — but I admire women perhaps more. They’ve got a rough deal — they go through the pain of birth.
I used to joke with Linda, I’d say, “I’ve had four babies and it didn’t hurt a bit.” I’d have to duck quickly before she’d throw something at me. But that’s a bit of the male attitude: hey, we just give out cigars, it’s great! Whereas women are going through all this pain and anguish. Anyway, I think being a mother gave Linda a deep connection with animals.
— Paul McCartney, interview w/ Chrissie Henderson for USA Week-end: Tears and laughter. (October 30, 1998)
Paul's obsession for procreation is well documented. I suppose it's broadly inarguable that the ability to breed is the female quality he values most. The fandom is keen on preaching Paul being a "weirdo" - a fashionable lad in Swinging London who was open to everything but neglect the fact that he has always been the old-fashioned man from up North who has clung ferociously to his working roots and attitudes. I've never been a fan of "weirdo Paul" - as we see, this is the kind of unusual idea that fits his freak-out image.
