A little look at Chrisjen's wardrobe in season 5

Her clothes keep up with the changes in her life or even manifest them. I think that the most meaningful shift when it comes to her costumes happened in season 5. They really tell us a story.

The season starts with typical "Chrisjen in space" attire. This fancy suit with bell sleeves and statement jewellery? we know and love it.

Next, we have this one. it's some kind of robe with a cape? can't really tell because there's no full shot of it. the collar is up, and the border is heavily embroidered. It looks like good ol' days on Earth.

The last one in this group is the turquoise suit. It's quite simple. They upcycled her jewellery from season 1 here. Another throwback then.

This suit is still on brand for Chrisjen in space, but they made some adjustments. Huge jewellery with gemstones is still here, but bell sleeves are less pompous. Lamé fabric of the suit makes her sparkle in dim light. The pattern looks like a hounds tooth, maybe a bit deconstructed (?). Is it still a thing in the future? it really grounds this outfit in the past.

Another sparkly suit good for dark shots. The only frivolous thing left is the collar. We see a shift in jewellery. No more gemstones. This one is all sturdy metal and minimalistic design, nothing like old Chrisjen.

Duster! the revolutionary piece. Phenomenal choices were made here. I'm going to make a separate post about it because I deconstructed this thing.

I've already made a post about this frock coat and its ambiguity and fluidity. The inspiration is similar to the one that happened with the duster, but they took it further. The presentation is masculine, but it's taken straight (gay) from 19th century dandy fashion. Dandy means aesthetics and blurred lines of gender, but it's also a persona, someone who reinvents themselves for the public to see. Some people say that dandies played with life because they were unable to live life. Fitting for Chrisjen here.

Not to be gay about it, but a woman wearing a frock coat with a ridiculous collar and a stock tie screams gay.

This is a proper mourning attire. Look at the border of this black duster. Look at those jet earrings - historically a typical mourning accessory.

in conclusion Chrisjen's clothes tell us so much more than "fabulous rich bitch in tinsel".

The Expanse - thoughts on power dynamics and POV

Finally decided to watch the Expanse.

The power dynamics in it fascinate me.

You’ve got Holden, the chosen one, the prototypical good hearted action hero male power fantasy. I would normally find a character like this very obnoxious. But I actually like him in this show. And I think the reason I like him is because he’s only a power fantasy on paper. 

In the actual show, he has shockingly little power or agency. His real function is a foil. 

His main purpose in the narrative is to make the other characters interesting — to influence their decisions. 

He’s Nagata’s love interest, so that Nagata has a reason to feel conflicted when his principles contradict her loyalties. He’s one of several moral compasses for Amos, who has a poor sense of right and wrong, and relies on people around him to help him decide what the right thing to do is.

In several plotlines, he barely even functions as a character at all. He’s a MacGuffin. 

He’s in the right place at the right time when other people need to use him. He’s the key to solving a problem, not because of any decisions he’s making, but because his unique biochemistry is the key the scientist needs to curing an infection, or because the alien consciousness has imbued him with secret knowledge that other people need to make informed decisions.

The story is told largely from his perspective, but it is not driven by his choices. 

It’s like an Arthurian legend told from Excalibur’s point of view, instead of King Arthur’s.
